Rasputin File, The

Автор: Radzinsky Edvard
Название: Rasputin File, The
ISBN: 0385489102 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780385489102
Издательство: Random House (USA)
Цена: от 1111 до 1470 р.

Описание: Review: By reviewing this file, the author explains Rasputin very effectively.
Through the book you will discover how his religion excused his controversial behaviour and who really murdered Rasputin, arguably causing the fall of the Tsar's. You may also learn how a primitive version of the Atkins diet nearly foiled Rasputins murderers!
In addition to all this, the book also shows how strange the Russian imperial court was (e.g. Rasputin's suspected murderer, Prince Yusupov, was a known transvestite). It also teaches a lot about the relationships in the Romanov dynasty before its fall in 1917 and hrotten the structure was.
Annoyingly, the book does not provide much of a conclusion to Rasputin and is written more in the way of a book of sources rather than a subjective analysis. It would be nice to have a summary opinion from the author who in the end leaves a load of untied threads.
Despite this, it is a great book and anyone wanting to know Rasputin better or even write a book on him should read this as it is a thorough and enjoyable account.

Описание: Alexander II was Russia's Lincoln, and the greatest reformer tsar since Peter the Great. He was also one of the most contradictory, and fascinating, of history's supreme leaders. He freed the serfs, yet launched vicious wars.

He engaged in the sexual exploits of a royal Don Juan, yet fell profoundly in love. He ruled during the "Russian Renaissance" of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Turgenev -- yet his Russia became the birthplace of modern terrorism. His story could be that of one of Russia's greatest novels, yet it is true.

It is also crucially important today. It is a tale that runs on parallel tracks. Alexander freed 23 million Russian slaves, reformed the justice system and the army, and very nearly became the father of Russia's first constitution and the man who led that nation into a new era of western-style liberalism.

Yet it was during this feverish time that modern nihilism first arose. On the sidelines of Alexander's state dramas, a group of radical, disaffected young people first experimented with dynamite, and first began to use terrorism. Fueled by the writings of a few intellectuals and zealots, they built bombs, dug tunnels, and planned ambushes.

They made no less than six unsuccessful attempts on Alexander's life. Finally, the parallel tracks joined, when a small cell of terrorists, living next door to Dostoevsky, built the fatal bomb that ended the life of the last great Ts r. It stopped Russian reform in its tracks.

Edvard Radzinsky is justly famous as both a biographer and a dramatist, and he brings both skills to bear in this vivid, page-turning, rich portrait of one of the greatest of all Romanovs. Delving deep into the archives, he raises intriguing questionsabout the connections between Dostoevsky and the young terrorists, about the hidden romances of the Romanovs, and about the palace conspiracies that may have linked hard-line aristocrats with their nemesis, the young nihilists. Alexander's life proves the timeless lesson that in Russia, it is dangerous to start reforms, but even more dangerous to stop them.

It also shows that the traps and dangers encountered in today's war on terrorists were there from the start.

Описание: This is an examination of the life and death of Nicholas II, with special emphasis on the last 18 months of his life. Material only recently available from the Kremlin archives, including the Romanov diaries, telegrams, letters and other papers, throws new light on events which have remained a mystery for 75 years. Fresh evidence is presented on the happenings of the night of 16th-17th July 1918, on whether any members of the Tsar's family survived, on the source of the final execution order, and on the part played by Lenin. The author, a leading Russian playwright and historian, has updated the book to incorporate the results of the DNA tests on the recently-uncovered Romanov remains. Although 11 were believed to have been executed, only nine bodies have been found, and the fate of Anastasia remains unresolved.
