ќписание: Development and progression of gastrointestinal disease involves inflammatory, vascular, fibrogenetic and immune reactions accompanied by deregulation of cellular growth and death often resulting in cancer of the organs affected. This book, the proceedings of Falk Symposium 132 on `Disease Progression and Carcinogenesis in the Gastrointestinal Tract, held in Freiburg, Germany, October 9-10, 2002, addresses these various cellular processes in five sections in order to build up a broad pathogenic concept of gastrointestinal disease, purposely going beyond organ-specific research. Each section combines experts in the various fields of molecular medicine together with clinical scientists in order to stimulate interdisciplinary discussion. In addition, clinical chapters focus on new findings in both diagnostics and therapeutics.

ќписание: Chronic inflammatory, malignant and metabolic diseases of the liver, pancreas and bile system account for substantial morbidity and mortality. Thus, new strategies to prevent, diagnose and treat such diseases are urgently needed. This book is the proceedings of the Falk Symposium 150, вАШDisease Progression and Disease Prevention in the Gastrointestinal TractвАЩ, held in Berlin, Germany, on 3--4 October, 2005, and focuses on the biliary system, pancreas and liver. Pathogenic processes are described as well as primary and secondary prevention and treatment of disease. Scientific and clinical experts offer a broad understanding and pave the ground for extensive interdisciplinary discussions. In this sense, the symposium generated new aspects contributing to "translation research" developing also -- at least in some aspects -- new perspectives on the various different pathogenic mechanisms in gastrointestinal organs. The present book summarizes the state of the art in these different disease entities, as presented at the meeting.

ќписание: Leading researchers and clinicians join forces to explain how malignant melanoma develops from its benign precursor cell type. The authors focus on the molecular mechanisms involved in melanogenesis, in the malignant transformation of melanocytes, and in the further progression of primary melanomas into invasive and metastatic melanomas. They also review recent advances in our understanding of the basic biology of melanocytes and the development, migration, and differentiation of melanoblasts into melanocytes. The book provides an up-to-date understanding of the progressive mechanisms of oncological development in malignant melanoma, a likely model of malignant progress for other types of cancer, and the ongoing development of novel therapeutics.

ќписание: Programmed cell death (PCD) plays pivotal roles in tumor progression, cancer therapeutics and resistance of tumor cells to therapy. With the discovery of key mechanisms that are involved in mediating PCD and in promoting resistance to therapy, design of therapeutic approaches for promoting tumor-selective cell death has risen dramatically. With this book, we give a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms that are involved in mediating and regulating PCD in cancer. We also provide a detailed indication of the utility of PCD in cancer therapy. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers investigating the role of PCD in cancer and other diseases, researchers investigating the molecular mechanism of chemotherapeutic agents and drug-resistance in cancer and for physicians using chemotherapeutic agents. Additionally, this book will be a important educational source forPhD students specializing in cell biology, immunology and MD students interested in Oncology and Cancer Therapeutics.

ќписание: Convertases are widely expressed activating enzymes involved in various physiological and pathological processes. The purpose of this book is to provide detailed and updated information on the role of these molecules in cancer. This book is the first to summarize current knowledge about the importance of protein precursors maturation by the convertases in tumor progression, angiogenesis and metastasis. In each chapter, the importance of the convertases in the activation of various cancer-related molecules including growth factors, adhesion molecules and proteases is discussed. Also this book covers the role of some convertases in the clinical setting. The book will be of interest to basic researchers as well as clinicians. It will also interest those working in the cancer research area and the pharmaceutical industry, who are looking for new strategies in cancer therapy. Finally, this book is also a useful reference for researchers and clinicians pursuing research on growth factors, adhesion molecules, proteases and their implications in the processes of tumor progression, angiogenesis and metastasis.

ќписание: This book is the proceedings of Falk Symposium 128, held in W√Љrzburg, Germany, on May 2-3, 2002, and dedicated to the important issue of colonic carcinogenesis and its underlying genetic and environmental factors. Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in industrialized countries. It has been recognized to be the consequence of a dynamic process leading from hyperproliferative epithelium through different classes of adenomas to invasive carcinoma. This adenoma-carcinoma sequence has been characterized on a molecular basis. Modern molecular biology has also helped to clarify the clustering of colorectal cancer within families, a phenomenon that has been known to clinicians for a long time. Thus, the pathogenesis of the two distinct familial colon cancer syndromes FAP (familial adenomatous polyposis) and HNPCC (hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer) is increasingly being understood. Thereby, an identification of affected people has become possible before the disease has manifested. There is also convincing evidence that the pathogenesis of sporadic colonic cancer is modulated by environmental, mainly nutritional, factors. Carcinogens seem to be far less important than the components of the `normal' human diet. It is likely that the interplay between protective and noxious dietary compounds determines the progression of the adenoma-carcinoma sequence. Additionally, a broad spectrum of drugs has been shown to affect colonic tumorigenesis, which provides the rationale for chemoprevention strategies. These issues set the scene for discussions on how genetic and environmental factors may interact in the pathogenesis of colonic cancer, contributing fresh ideas to the prevention of this most prevalent malignancy in the industrialized world.
