Описание: Albert Moore (1841-93) was one of the most important late Victorian artists. In a single-minded quest for aesthetic perfection, he employed the female figure to embody abstract systems of ideal beauty, and created many of the iconic and defining images of the Aesthetic Movement. Yet he has remained a shadowy figure.

Based on original research and unpublished family documents, Robyn Aslesons monograph presents a fresh view of the artists allegedly reclusive personality, and firmly establishes him as a major figure and a significant precursor of Modernism. This beautiful book is now issued in a paperback format that will bring the artist to a wide and appreciative audience. The Victorian artist Albert Moore (1841-93) pursued a lifelong quest for ideal beauty - an ambitious crusade which propelled him from the naturalism of John Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites, through the medievalism of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement, to the Classicism and Japonisme of his friends Frederic Leighton and James McNeill Whistler.

Before his twenty-fifth year, Moore had outstripped the aesthetic interests of his closest colleagues and embarked on a solitary search for the timeless secrets of aesthetic perfection. In a series of exquisitely executed paintings, Moore employed the female figure to embody the abstract systems of ideal beauty that he discerned in the finest examples of art and nature. Building on the artists meticulous watercolour studies of nature and his monumental figural decorations for architecture, these paintings chart the evolution of Moores singular artistic creed and provide many of the defining images of the Aesthetic ovement.

Fiercely protective of his independence, Moore rejected the high visibility embraced by his celebrated professional colleagues. Thus, ironically, while his paintings hung prominently at annual exhibitions of the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery, Moore himself remained a shadowy figure on the periphery of the Victorian art world. He remains an enigma today.

Although his paintings are among the most celebrated icons of the Victorian era, few recognize in them the unique analysis of pure form that established Moore as the most radical exponent of English Aestheticism and one of the most progressive artists of the nineteenth century. A one-man avant-garde, Moore anticipated by several generations the abstract aesthetic concerns of twentieth-century Modernism. This full-length study of Albert Moore - the first to appear in over 100 years - seeks to restore the artist to his rightful place in art history, while also fleshing out his hitherto mysterious personality and lifestyle.

Drawing on unpublished materials and on a mass of new and fully documented research, the book analyses the origins and development of Moores aesthetic systems and traces his formative links to architectural theory and practice. New evidence concerning Moores personal life and professional networks debunks the myth of his hermit-like existence, and sheds light on his notorious exclusion from Royal Academy membership. In particular, the author reveals that Moores friendship with and influence upon James McNeill Whistler were closer and more important than has hitherto been assumed.

The artists studio practice and his relationship with patrons, models and students are also considered. In place of the taciturn recluse of Victorian legend, Albert Moore emerges as a passionate and audacious crusader for beauty, an artist well ahead of his time.

Описание: This unique collection of beautiful and intriguing objects, more than 700 pieces of British and European silver, was put together over the past forty years by a discerning English enthusiast. It is striking for its great variety of types, the five centuries represented and the widespread places of making, from Finland to Italy, offering an unparalleled overview of design and technique, as well as a social history of silver for eating, drinking, around the house and as accessories to daily life. Selected with a keen eye for their excellent condition, their historical interest, and their inherent quality, most objects are of museum standard, although no single museum holds so many examples of flatware, from England and France and drinking vessels from Spain, Germany, France and Britain, of such diverse designs and dates. Tableware ranges in scale and date from a bread basket by Paul Crespin to an elegant modern caviar spoon. Great names from the story of English silver are present, from Paul Storr and the royal goldsmiths Robert Garrard, Philip Rundell and Benjamin Pyne, to leading Huguenots, such as John Hugh le Sage, David Willaume and Edward Feline. A caster from Charles Kandler's service for the De of Norfolk, spoons by Hester Bateman, mustard pots by the Hennells, and small wares by Joseph Willmore and other specialist Birmingham makers of 'toys' tell the story of polite dining. Regional rarities from Plymouth, Liverpool, Norwich, Exeter, Chester and Scottish-made drinking vessels round out the coverage. Royal associations appealed to the collector, explaining the presence of a beaker from the Battle of Culloden, a set of two-handled cups are among half a dozen items from the Duke of Cumberland's famous collection and the badges worn by King's Messengers. Plaques by Simon de Passe depict Elizabeth I and other royal successors. Rarities include an early Stuart royal bell and a varvel for a hawk. A strong category is the engaging personal accessories, from a calendar to a shoe horn, with striking and varied boxes for patches, tobacco and snuff. Many boxes combine semi-precious stones or organic materials such as mulberry wood, turtle shell and mother of pearl. A history of changing taste emerges through the chinoiseries of a late seventeenth-century perfume flask, the pique work or allusive baroque engraving on snuff boxes, rococo chasing of cream jugs, chaste neoclassical teawares, flamboyant Regency wine labels and inventive and eclectic Victorian tableware. Each object has been catalogued and specially photographed, often with details, for this publication, making it a significant work of reference, as well as a handsome record of the ingenious art of the silversmith. Grouped by their purpose, each section is introduced with a brief summary of social and design history and supplementary illustrations such as the sources for engraving.

Описание: Few painters lived the intellectual adventures of the early twentieth century as intensely as Albert Gleizes. At the centre of the public scandal over Cubism that broke out in Paris in 1911, he was with Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia in New York during the war and was one of the first European avant-garde artists to respond to the scale and vigour of New York life. Gleizes was also one of the few French painters of the 1920s to recognise non-representational painting as the logical development of Cubism.

His work as a painter is accompanied by an immense body of theoretical work, addressing the question posed to starkly by Duchamp and Picabia: why should we paint? What is the justification for the work of art? Over his life he touches on many spheres of human activity - religious, political and cultural history, physics and the philosophy of work. This fascinating book follows Gleizes' argument as it evolves, drawing on detailed analysis of works of art and both published and unpublished writings. It reveals Gleizes, not just as a significant historical personality, but as a man whose work and thinking remains astonishingly fresh and relevant to the needs of our own time.

Описание: Nearly sixty years after the end of World War II the Third Reich continues to fascinate both authors and readers. Nazi propaganda, in particular, has been the topic of countless books, as have the personalities involved in the German propaganda machine. Yet, despite all of the efforts in this regard, one aspect of that propaganda study has remained largely unexamined. It is the regimes use of postal materials as a tool for expressing its propaganda message. In this new, profusely illustrated book, Albert L. Moore offers readers an overview of the images and messages that filled the mailboxes of Hitlers subjects and victims. As official documents of Nazi Germany, the stamps, postcards, and even postmarks used during the time provide the reader with an explicit picture of the types of propaganda messages every German was expected to see and act upon on a daily basis. Moores groundbreaking work helps us to better understand this powerful, yet heretofore unrecognized, weapon in Hitlers propaganda arsenal. This is not merely a book for those interested in stamps or postcards as collectibles, it is a book for those who desire to better understand what it was like to live inside the Third Reich!
