Описание:  The monograph provides the theoretical basis and physical interpretation of our current understanding of the quantum kinetic processes in various systems. Although the kinetic phenomena became the subject of scientific studies starting from the Boltzman's publications in the end of 19-th century, it was not until 1960-1980 that the quantum kinetic phenomena have been promoted to the forefront of research. Among the reasons of this progress are i) development of low temperature physics, ii) advances inmodern technology (in particular, the possibility to produce nanoscale structures), and iii) realization of quantum devices based on band engineering such as lasers, transistors, and photonic devices. Recent challenges in the practical implementations of the quantum kinetics involve quantum information processing and solid-state devices for THz spectral range. The text begins with a description of electron, phonon, and photon excitations (the systems with order parameter such as superconductors and ferromagnets are not considered). In the first part (chapters 2-8) we consider quantum kinetic equations for electrons and bosons and different variants of diagram techniques. The second part is mostly devoted to various modern applications of the quantum kinetic theory. The last chapter describes the theory of fluctuations.Intended for graduate and post-graduate students, physicists, and engineers conducting research on solid state physics and novel device applications. The treatment presumes background knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid state physics.

Издательство: Cambridge Academ
Цена: 14900 р.
Наличие на складе: Поставка под заказ.
Описание: Underpinning the axiomatic formulation of quantum theory presented in this undergraduate textbook is a review of early experiments, a comparison of classical and quantal terminology, a Schroedinger-equation treatment of the one-dimensional quantum box, and a survey of relevant mathematics. Among the many concepts comprehensively discussed are: operators; state vectors and wave functions; experimental observables; classical/quantal connections; and symmetry properties. The theory is applied to a wide variety of systems including the non-relativistic H-atom, external electromagnetic fields, and spin1/2. Collisions are described using wave packets. Various time-dependent and time-independent approximations are discussed; applications include electromagnetic transition rates and corrections to the H-atom energies. The final chapter deals with identical-particle symmetries and their application to the He atom, the Periodic Table and diatomic molecules. There are also brief treatments of advanced subjects such as gauge invariance and hidden variables.

Quantum Mechanics: Theory and Applications

Автор: Ghatak Ajoy, Lokanathan S.

Издательство: Springer
Цена: 21175 р.

Описание: An understanding of quantum mechanics is vital to all students of physics, chemistry and electrical engineering, but requires a lot of mathematical concepts, the details of which are given with great clarity in this book. Various concepts have been derived from first principles, so it can also be used for self-study. The chapters on the JWKB approximation, time-independent perturbation theory and effects of magnetic field stand out for their clarity and easy-to-understand mathematics. Two complete chapters on the linear harmonic oscillator provide a very detailed discussion of one of the most fundamental problems in quantum mechanics. Operator algebra is used to show the ease with which one can calculate the harmonic oscillator wave functions and study the evolution of the coherent state. Similarly, three chapters on angular momentum give a detailed account of this important problem. Perhaps the most attractive feature of the book is the excellent balance between theory and applications and the large number of applications in such diverse areas as astrophysics, nuclear physics, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, solid-state physics, and quantum well structures.

Quantum Theory of the Solid State: An Introduction

Автор: Kantorovich Lev
Название: Quantum Theory of the Solid State: An Introduction
ISBN: 1402021534 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781402021534
Издательство: Springer
Цена: 7466 р.
Наличие на складе: Нет в наличии.
Описание: The book targets a broad readership. First of all, it targets young researchers (postgraduate students) in solid state physics (both physicists and theoretical chemists) as it contains a wide and comprehensive coverage of all important branches of the subject including an up-to-date survey of recent revolutionary advances in quantum mechanics which have made it possible not only to calculate many properties of molecules and solids in close agreement with experiment, but to make reliable predictions in cases when a direct experiment is not possible (e.g. the Earth core). Secondly, it should be a valuable asset to established researchers in the areas of materials science, solid-state physics and chemistry due to very detailed explanations of a wide range of phenomena ranging from symmetry, lattice vibrations, electronic structure and superconductivity to magnetic and dielectric properties. Rigour and detail in explaining complicated mathematical techniques and in providing derivations when talking of various physical concepts are essential for those who would like to really understand things they have never had a chance to. Because of that and of the fact that the book contains a lot of material from different areas of solid-state physics retold from a single viewpoint, it should be indispensable for lecturers. Not only a number of courses, both general and specialised, should be possible to set up, but these courses may also be of a different level of difficulty ranging from undergraduate, postgraduate and then to highly advanced ones. This is because of a clear marking system adopted in the book. Hence, it should also be useful for advanced third- and fourth-year undergraduate students.

Quantum Measure Theory

Издательство: Springer
Цена: 16324 р.

Описание: This book is the first systematic treatment of measures on projection lattices of von Neumann algebras. It presents significant recent results in this field. One part is inspired by the Generalized Gleason Theorem on extending measures on the projection lattices of von Neumann algebras to linear functionals. Applications of this principle to various problems in quantum physics are considered (hidden variable problem, Wigner type theorems, decoherence functional, etc.). Another part of the monograph deals with a fascinating interplay of algebraic properties of the projection lattice with the continuity of measures (the analysis of Jauch-Piron states, independence conditions in quantum field theory, etc.). These results have no direct analogy in the standard measure and probability theory. On the theoretical physics side, they are instrumental in recovering technical assumptions of the axiomatics of quantum theories only by considering algebraic properties of finitely additive measures (states) on quantum propositions.

Quantum Theory of Conducting Matter / Newtonian Equations of Motion for a Bloch Electron

Автор: Fujita Shigeji, Ito Kei
Название: Quantum Theory of Conducting Matter / Newtonian Equations of Motion for a Bloch Electron

Издательство: Springer
Цена: 4743 р.
Наличие на складе: Нет в наличии.
Описание: Shigeji Fujita is Professor of Physics at State University of New York at Buffalo and has published 3 books with the Springer family since 1996.  His areas of expertise include statistical physics, solid and liquid state physics, superconductivity and Quantum Hall Effect theory.  The measurements of the Hall coefficient RH and the Seebeck coefficient (thermoelectric power) S are known to give the sign of the carrier charge q. In sodium (Na) forming a body-centered cubic (bcc) lattice both RH and S are negative, indicating that the carrier is the "electron". In silver (Ag) forming a face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice the Hall coefficient RH is negative but the Seebeck coefficient S is positive. This complication arises from the Fermi surface of the metal. In conducting matter physics the "electrons" and the "holes" play important roles. The "electrons" ("holes") which by definition circulate counterclockwise (clockwise) around the magnetic field (flux) vector B cannot be discussed based on the prevailing equation of motion in the electron dynamics: dk/dt=q (E + v x B), k = k-vector, E = electric field, v = velocity since the energy-momentum relation is not incorporated in this equation. In this book we shall derive Newtonian equations of motion with a symmetric mass tensor. We diagonalize this tensor by introducing the principal masses and the principal axes of the inverse-mass tensor associated with the Fermi surface. We demonstrate that the "electrons" ("holes") are generated near the Fermi surface, depending on the curvature sign of the surface. As applications, we treat magnetic oscillations in the susceptibility and conductivity, cyclotron resonance, thermopower and infrared Hall effect. In each case we treat the phenomena, starting with the crystal structure and using the Fermi surface. Free-electron model, phonons, kinetic theory of the electron transport, the magnetic susceptibility and the Boltzmann equation method, which are normally covered in the introductory solid state physics course are included as the preliminaries. The text is composed of three parts, Part I preliminaries, Chap. 1-6, Bloch electron dynamics, Chap. 7-10, and applications, Chap. 11-15.

Описание: "Quantum Interferometry in Phase Space" is primarily concerned with quantum-mechanical distribution functions and their applications in quantum optics and neutron interferometry. In the first part of the book, the author describes the phase-space representation of quantum optical phenomena such as coherent and squeezed states. Applications to interferometry, e.g. in beam splitters and fiber networks, are also presented. In the second part of the book, the theoretical formalism is applied to neutron interferometry, including the dynamical theory of diffraction, coherence properties of superposed beams, and dephasing effects.

Описание: Operational Quantum Theory I is a distinguished work on quantum theory at an advanced algebraic level. Quantum theory (nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and quantum theory) is developed from a representation theory of lie group and lie algebraic operations acting on both finite and infinite dimensional vector spaces. Time and space related finite dimensional representation structures, with simple Lie operations and, as a non-relativistic application, the Kepler problem which has long fascinated quantum theorists are dealt with in some detail. This book features many equations which allow the reader to better understand the applications of operational quantum theory, and to provide accurate and precise descriptions of the subject.Operational Quantum Theory I aims to understand more deeply on an operational basis what is already known and current developments in quantum theory, but also suggests new solutions to previously unsolved problems.
