Описание: Current developments in optical technologies are being directed toward nanoscale devices with subwavelength dimensions, in which photons are manipulated on the nanoscale. Although light is clearly the fastest means to send information to and from the nanoscale, there is a fundamental incompatibility between light at the microscale and devices and processes at the nanoscale. Nanostructured metals which support surface plasmon modes can concentrate electromagnetic (EM) fields to a small fraction of a wavelength while enhancing local field strengths by several orders of magnitude.

For this reason, plasmonic nanostructures can serve as optical couplers across the nano-micro interface: metal-dielectric and metal-semiconductor nanostructures can act as opti al nanoantennae and enhance light matter coupling in nanoscale devices. Описание: Rapid and sensitive detection of chemical and biological analytes becomes increasingly important in areas such as medical diagnostics, food control and environmental monitoring. Optical biosensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and optical waveguide spectroscopy have been extensively pushed forward in these fields. In this book, we combine long range surface plasmons (LRSPs), surface plasmon-enhanced fluorescence spectroscopy (SPFS) and optical waveguide spectroscopy with hydrogel thin film for highly sensitive detection of molecular analytes. LRSPs are special surface plasmon waves propagating along thin metal films with orders of magnitude higher electromagnetic field intensity and lower damping than conventional SPs. Therefore, their excitation on the sensor surface provides higher fluorescence signal for molecules detection. The hydrogel thin film attached on a sensor surface served both as a binding matrix and as an optical waveguide for probing molecules interactions. The higher binding capacity of hydrogel and low damping of optical waveguide provide higher sensitivity for molecules detection as compared to regular SPR.

Описание: Surace Plasmon-Polaritons (SPPs) are special form of electromagnetic (EM) waves that propagate in metallic nano-structure where EM waves can't propagate, overcoming the diffraction limit. Because of that, SPPs draw much attention of researchers from theoretical and experiential point of view. The finite difference time-domain (FDTD) is numerical method that is extensively used to simulate and study SPPs. In this book, The simulation of SPPs is explained step by step. Starting with Maxwell's equation, a new algorithm is derived and implemented. This algorithm is capable of handling many dispersion relations used to model metal in FDTD like Drude, Lorentze and Debye models. The algorithm can handle single-pole and multi-pole dispersion relations in the same manner. Due to the generality of this algorithm we called it the general algorithm. it is tested against analytical results and proved excellent accuracy. The algorithm is then used to simulate propagation of SPPs in metal using different models. Also, different structures and different cases were studied.

Описание: This book presents several theoretical, numerical and experimental studies in the field of plasmonics, which I carried out during my PhD. One basic problem in plasmonics is the study of optical Bloch modes of planar arrays of metallic nanostructures. Here a new finite-elements-based numerical approach for the modal analysis of such structures is described. Then I present a thorough investigation of the optical properties of a well-known plasmonic crystal, which is the 1-D lamellar grating. The focus here is the possible use of this structure as a light trapping device for photovoltaics applications. Another treated topic is plasmonic nanofocusing: an experiment involving metal-coated dielectric wedges is discussed. A similar structure is then studied for the implementation in an optoelectronic biosensor based on a high electron mobility phototransistor. Finally a class of particular nanostructures is addressed, termed as plasmonic vortex lenses, constituted by spiral and circular grooves on a gold surface, which are able to impress an arbitrary orbital angular momentum to the propagating surface plasmons.
