Описание: We are really less in the decade of the brain than in the third century of continuing research and theory on mind/brain relations. None the less, the subject now asserts itself with special vigour. Modern technology has provided not only artificial versions of what seems to be highly developed intelligence, but also high-fidelity imaging techniques for visualizing the human brain in action. It is worth remembering that in such matters technical progress is likely to outpace refinements in perspective; indeed, technical advances are likely to shape perspective. Those inclined to defend indifference to the past contend that the issue is a scientific one, the central terms of which were simply unknown in ancient or medieval times or even a century ago. What Aristotle or Kant thought about the mind is not likely to be any more informing than what they thought about gravitation or energy. But such a dismissal begs the question: is the issue of mind one that science is to settle? Such a dismissal also prejudges the extent to which past thinkers might even contribute to a clarification of the scientific aspects of the issue. This book is intended for undergraduates of philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology, or history or psychology courses and also interested general readers.
