Each of us is exposed to several thousand messages a day. To be successful, covers not only have to stand out amongst all the clutter, but they also need to make an instant connection with viewers. Designing covers isn't an easy task. It's a minefield of requirements, constraints, and subjective opinions, oftentimes resulting in what we like to call the "design-by-committee pit of despair." Make the logo bigger. The CEO's daughter doesn't like orange; change it. The sales team begins art directing. Welcome to the land of mediocrity. We've all been there, and it requires ninja-like skills to traverse and emerge in one piece. Despite the challenges, some covers clearly rise to the top. You can't help but pick up the magazine, open the brochure, or buy the book. They draw you in through their cleverness, simplicity, or boldness. These are the covers contained herein.
Of the more than 2,000 covers received, the authors had the dubious task of selecting about 350 to be featured in TheBest of Cover Design. The chosen covers were selected based on their initial visual impact and effectiveness in conveying the message within. It is an inspiration feast for the eyes.

The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue explore the abiding themes of still life across the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the fruit piece, the game piece, kitchen and banquet still lifes, the flower painting, musical instruments, the cabinet of curiosities, and the trompe-l'oeil. The diversity of artistic treatment of these themes in different countries will be shown through related works, such as the fruit still lifes of the female artists Louise Moillon and Fede Galizia or the kitchen scenes by Jean-Simeon Chardin and Luis Melendez. Other artists who cultivated this genre and who are also represented in the exhibition and in the catalogue include Juan Sanchez Cotan, Juan van der Hamen, Pieter Claesz, Juan Zurbaran, Rembrandt van Rijn, Antonio de Pereda, Nicolas Largillierre, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Luis de Melendez and Francisco de Goya. The exhibition has been made possible due to the commitment of the many lending institutions, private collectors and museums, such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, The Metropolitam Museum in New York, The Louvre Museum, The Prado Museum, The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Mauritshuis in The Hague, The National Gallery in London and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, among so many others. This volume allows an insight into the theme, through the essays and the individual studies of all paintings, written by such scholars as Peter Cherry, John Loughman and Lesley Stevenson. Volume II, devoted to still-life painting in the 19th and 20th centuries, is due for publication in October 2011.
