Описание: Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin (1699-1779) was arguably the most talented French painter of the eighteenth century, best known for his original still lifes. Composed of simple, everyday objects, these works glow with warmth and magic, from the dull iron of the kitchen pans, to the glaze of the green earthenware jug or the shining copper of the cauldron. There is no superfluous detail or search for decorative effect; the beauty of his paintings lies in their minimalism. Chardin received early recognition for his work, becoming a member of the French Royal Academy in 1728 at the age of only twenty-nine. Following the success of his early still lifes and inspired no doubt by his Dutch seventeenth-century predecessors, whose work was very much in vogue in Parat the time, Chardin went on to paint some exquisite genre scenes and portraits, remarkable for their realism and honesty as well as for their technique. His works had a tremendous influence on subsequent artists, inspiring painters as diverse as Courbet, Manet and Cezanne.

Описание: Widely acknowledged in his time as a premier painter of still-life and genre scenes, Jean-Baptiste-Simion Chardin (1699-1779) created unsentimentalised works that appeal to viewers today for their richness of feeling and simplicity of composition. This sumptuously illustrated book reproduces in full colour 99 of Chardin's works and arranges them around five themes: Chardin's Beginnings and His First Still-lifes, Utensils and Household Objects, Genre Sc nes, Chardin's Return to Still-life, and Pastels. The contributors to the volume explore Chardin's work from many different angles, including the latest thinking on such lesser-known facets of his life and work as his use of ceramics and glass, his financial and property affairs, and the complex history of engravings of his paintings.

Each of the five sections of the book has an introduction and a selection of Chardin's paintings accompanied on facing pages by complete provenance, exhibition, and bibliographic information. The book also offers an extensive Chardin biography, an index of names and places, and an index of works. This book is the catalogue of an international exhibition of Chardin's work, timed to coincide with the tercentenary of his birth.

The exhibition opens at the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais in Paris from 7 September to 22 November 1999, and then travels to the Kunstmuseum and Kunsthalle in D|sseldorf from 5 December 1999 to 20 February 2000, the Royal Academy in London from 9 March to 28 May 2000 and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from 19 June to 17 September 2000.

"Only a petty mind, an artist who at most speaks and dresses as such, looks solely for people in whom he recognizes the harmonious proportions of allegorical figures. For the true artist, as for the natural scientist, every type is interesting, and even the smallest muscle has its importance." --Marcel Proust

Long overlooked in Proust's posthumously published writings, Chardin and Rembrandt, written when he was only 24 years old, not only reemphasizes the importance of visual art to his development, but contains the seeds of his later work. Submitted in 1895 by Proust to the newspaper Revue hebdomadaire (it was rejected), this essay is much more than a straightforward piece of art criticism. It is a literary experiment in which an unnamed narrator gives advice to a young man suffering from melancholy, taking him on an imaginary tour through the Louvre where his readings of Chardin imbue the everyday world with new meaning, and his ruminations on Rembrandt take his melancholic pupil beyond the realm of mere objects.
Published for the first time as a stand-alone volume and newly translated, this edition, part of the David Zwirner Books ekphrasis series, aims to introduce a wider audience to one of Proust's most important pieces on art. "For the true artist," as Proust writes, "as for the natural scientist, every type is interesting, and even the smallest muscle has its importance." The same could be said of the author's own work--every essay has its own crucial place in the formation of his groundbreaking oeuvre.
The afterword by renowned Proust scholar Alain Madeleine-Perdrillat, originally published in the French by Le Bruits du Temps, is an impassioned argument in favor of returning to the lost paths of Proust's early thinking. It sees, in the passage from Chardin's world of objects to Rembrandt's contemplative paintings, a movement toward the radical interiority for which Proust would later become widely celebrated as a novelist. Written at the beginning of his literary career, Chardin and Rembrandt gestures back to some of Proust's earliest notes on art, while creating space for what was to come.
