Описание: With one foot still in its Soviet past, Belarus might not be the most obvious choice for travellers, but its isolation is at the heart of its appeal. Those who venture here will find a history rich in heroism and tragedy, set amid a landscape of primeval birch forests, snow-edged lakes and cornflower fields, replete with golden-orbed Russian Orthodox churches and villages where age-old traditions still hold sway. While it's easy for visitors to feel as though they've slipped into another time and dimension, they'll encounter singular hospitality and a genuine welcome. Nigel Roberts' Belarus, the only standalone guide in English to the country, combines detailed background information with expert practical advice for those seeking to take the road less travelled.

Описание: In the West, Belarus is generally thought of as "the last dictatorship in Europe." However, this political stereotype neglects the roots of the country's identity--or identity crisis. In this fascinating study of unfinished nation-building in Belarus, Grigory Ioffe draws on his two dozen research trips to the country to trace Belarus's history, geography, political situation, society, and economy. The book highlights rapid economic growth in post-1996 Belarus and the underpinnings of the country's political landscape. The United States has ostracized official Belarus since the mid-1990s and has repeatedly condemned President Lukashenka's undemocratic ways. However, his presidency has been stable since 1994, and since 2002 he has been successfully reshaping himself from an unabashed Russophile into a kind of Belarusian nationalist. Nevertheless, the Belarusian nation is not yet a defined entity--many Belarusians are not yet certain as to what sets them apart from Russians, and a multiplicity of national projects hinders national consolidation and deters nation-building. Ioffe pays particular attention to the current linguistic situation, in which Russian, rather than Belarusian, is the language of the majority. The ambivalent relationship between Russia and Belarus results in an identity crisis that is not understood by the West, which leads to Western policies toward Belarus that are based on a fallacy of geopolitical thinking. Based on Belarusian- and Russian-language sources along with the author's personal observations, this book will lead readers to a deeper understanding of Belarus, its relationship with Russia, and its still-forming national identity.

An inspiring biography - BUBBY'S STORIES: Belarus to the Bronx is a wonderful true story. It is the history of seven generations of a Jewish immigrant family. Dating from the late 1800s and their medieval shtetl existence in rural war-torn Belarus, Russia we follow this family's journey across the European continent, and half the world, into the modernity of the political scene of 20th century New York City. This non-fiction saga is written in the form of a narrative, and as much as possible in the vernacular, in order to capture the charm and picturesque wonderment of surprise that was heard in the original telling of these stories. The book begins in 1979 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in Bubby's kitchen. Bubby (the Yiddish word for grandmother), is describing her life as a little girl, in turn-of-the-century Belarus to her young grandson. She tells him the stories of their family's history and how she and her sister, all alone and barely more than little girls, came to Ellis Island, and how they assimilated into American life. The stories Bubby tells her grandson, and others I have included that he was too young to hear, are some of the most charming, heartwarming and heartbreaking stories that you could imagine. Some of these stories are poignant, others are funny and some are unbelievable; but all are true and historically accurate. My family's names are on the memorial wall at Ellis Island. Through these stories, historic background and interesting descriptions of life in the shtetl and the Jewish experience of assimilation in the United States are told through the eyes of real people. Besides being a good story, BUBBY'S STORIES is a condemnation of war and intolerance. The book ends with "It Could Be Kindness," an original poem that was written by the author based on the inspiring and powerful words, wisdom and ideas that were espoused by her parents.
An isolated country dominated by a single, ruthless leader, Belarus is Europe's last modern dictatorship. Despite the country's fascinating history, rich culture, and gorgeous landscape, few nonresidents travel to Belarus and take advantage of its resources, and even though the nation's people are friendly and hospitable, they nevertheless live under the constant threat of arrest.
Belarus exists outside of modern European norms, frozen in time by a tyrannical regime that fooled its citizens into thinking a new leader would grant their freedom. Instead, Alexander Lukashenko has pursued a pattern of rule as oppressive as all of those who came before him. Brian Bennett follows the history of Belarus from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the 2006 ascendance of Lukashenko. He revisits the excitement felt by many Belarussians after their first presidential election in 1994 and the cold realization that the country had returned to business as usual, as evidenced by the implementation of undemocratic referendums, fixed elections, suspicious disappearances, and the violent suppression of public opposition. Bennett concludes with a close consideration of the enigmatic Lukashenko and how his regime might one day end.
