ќписание: In the aftermath of the wave of blackouts that affected US, UK and mainland Europe utilities in 2003 and 2004, renewed attention has been focused on maintaining the highest level of reliability and security in the operation of power systems. The lack of adequate transmission infrastructure as well as real-time tools aimed at detecting and alarming system conditions have also been highlighted. In this context, the need to assess stability and predict the risk of blackout in real-time has become particularly relevant. Early work in this field documented in technical papers published throughout the 1990s and early 2000s underlined the importance of performing stability assessment in real-time. While static security assessment is conceptually straightforward, innovative approaches are needed to combine it with dynamic security assessment to develop an overall scheme so that results can be used for on-line decision-making. On October 13, 2004, the IEEE Power Systems Conference and Exposition 2004 hosted the вАШReal-Time Stability ChallengeвАЩ panel session. Organized by the Power System Dynamic Performance Committee, the panel was a forum for presenting progress achieved in this field, discussing new ideas, and identifying the challenges to be met in the course of future research.Real-Time Stability in Power Systems: Techniques for Early Detection of the Risk of Blackout is built around most of the panel papers, updated and expanded by the authors with the new material relevant to the panel theme. The chapters are contributed by well known experts in the field, thus providing an authoritative reference on the theory and implementation of real-time stability assessment -- one of the critical topics of the day. Some of the issues discussed in the book include, but are not limited to:*Stability limits and how to objectively define them, *Techniques for defining and measuring the distance to instability,*The characterization of the risk of blackout, *Discussion of quick, approximate methods to filter out non-critical contingencies and do a detailed simulation only of those that result in limit violations,*Theoretical description and practical experience with real-time and/or near real-time stability applications available today in the SCADA/EMS industry.

ќписание: The first and second editions of Power System Relaying have been used as a textbook by universities and in industry courses throughout the world. The theory and fundamentals of relaying, explained in accessible language, constitute the major part of the book. Power System Relaying, 3rd edition covers fundamental relaying concepts, description of specific relaying concepts and circuits as well as major system devices such as current and potential transformers, transmission lines, transformers, motors and generators, generating plant auxiliary systems, buses and station configuration and equipment. Numerical examples, which clarify the text and demonstrate the philosophy underlying relay selection and settings are included, and problems representing actual power system situations are presented. Utility practices and problems worldwide are discussed, and contrasts are made between the different technologies and preferences of USA, Europe and Asia.

ќписание: The book begins with a SCADA/EMS primer aimed at familiarizing the reader with the real-time and study mode data environments in modern control centers. These installations became quite sophisticated and offer superb application integration opportunities that were not available just a few years ago. This background is complemented with a brief review of the stability landscape from the real-time implementation perspective. The subsequent material is clustered along the lines traditionally recognized in the industry from steady-state stability, to transient stability, and to voltage stability. Within these clusters, each chapter describes actual solutions, emphasizes the particular challenges that were faced, shows how the problems were solved, and shades light on the experimental results. The next group of chapters addresses transient stability.†Among other things, it†describes the implementation of on-line Transient Security Assessment at Southern Company Services by Powertech Labs (Powertech) and provides details about the simulation model, including the dynamic equivalent of the external system, and the complex hardware architecture that supports the computations. Because the book aims primarily at the practical aspects of implementing stability assessment in real-time, the space for theoretical background in each chapter was reduced to the strictest minimum. For the benefit of readers who may not be quite familiar with the underlying theoretical techniques, appendices that describe the key algorithms and discuss some theoretical issues directly related to the subject matter of the book are included at the end.
ќписание: Power System Small Signal Stability Analysis and Control presents a detailed analysis of the problem of severe outages due to the sustained growth of small signal oscillations in modern interconnected power systems. The ever-expanding nature of power systems and the rapid upgrade to smart grid technologies call for the implementation of robust and optimal controls. Power systems that are forced to operate close to their stability limit have resulted in the use of control devices by utility companies to improve the performance of the transmission system against commonly occurring power system disturbances. . This book demonstrates how the application of power system damping controllers such as Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) and Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) controllersЧnamely Static Var Compensator (SVC) and Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC)Чcan guard against system disruptions. Power System Small Signal Stability Analysis and Control examines the signal stability problem, providing an overview and analysis of the concepts and of the controllers used to mitigate it. Detailed mathematical derivations, illustrated case studies, the application of soft computation techniques, designs of robust controllers, and end-of-chapter exercises make it a useful resource to researchers, practicing engineers, and post-graduates in electrical engineering.
ќписание: This book aims to provide insights on new trends in power systems operation and control and to present, in detail, analysis methods of the power system behavior (mainly its dynamics) as well as the mathematical models for the main components of power plants and the control systems implemented in dispatch centers.

ќписание: As the demand for electrical power increases, power systems are being operated closer to their stability limits. This text focuses on explaining and analysing the dynamic performance of such systems which is important for both system operation and planning. Placing emphasis on understanding the underlying physical principles, the book opens with an exploration of basic concepts using simple mathematical models. Building on these firm foundations the authors proceed to more complex model and algorithms.
