Описание: The aim of Modeling and Simulation of Microstructure Evolution in Solidifying Alloys is to describe in a clear mathematical language the physics of the solidification structure evolution of cast alloys. The concepts and methodologies presented here for the net-shaped casting and the ingot remelt processes can be applied, with some modifications, to model other solidification processes such as welding and deposition processes. Another aim of the book is to provide simulation examples of the solidification structure modeling in some crucial commercial casting technologies as well as to provide practical techniques for controlling the structure formation during the solidification processes. The simulation codes (PC versions) for 2D (includes fluid flow computations) and 3D mesoscale dendrite growth models (for 2D and 3D simple casting geometries) written in Visual Fortran 90 are provided in a CD attached to the book.
Описание: Phase transformations in solids typically lead to surprising mechanical behaviour with far reaching technological applications. The mathematical modeling of these transformations in the late 80s initiated a new field of research in applied mathematics, often referred to as mathematical materials science, with deep connections to the calculus of variations and the theory of partial differential equations. This volume gives a brief introduction to the essential physical background, in particular for shape memory alloys and a special class of polymers (nematic elastomers). Then the underlying mathematical concepts are presented with a strong emphasis on the importance of quasiconvex hulls of sets for experiments, analytical approaches, and numerical simulations.
Описание: Computational Methods for Microstructure-Property Relationships introduces state-of-the-art advances in computational modeling approaches for materials structure-property relations. Written with an approach that recognizes the necessity of the engineering computational mechanics framework, this volume provides balanced treatment of heterogeneous materials structures within the microstructural and component scales. Encompassing both computational mechanics and computational materials science disciplines, this volume offers an analysis of the current techniques and selected topics important to industry researchers, such as deformation, creep and fatigue of primarily metallic materials. Researchers, engineers and professionals involved with predicting performance and failure of materials will find Computational Methods for Microstructure-Property Relationships a valuable reference.

Описание: The book comprises three parts. Part 1 gives a historical description of the development of ironworking techniques since the earliest times. Part 2 is the core of the book and deals with the metallurgical basis of microstructures, with four main themes: phase diagrams, solidification processes, diffusion, and solid state phase transformations. Part 3 begins by an introduction to steel design principles. It then goes on to consider the different categories of steels, placing emphasis on their specific microstructural features. Finally, a comprehensive reference list includes several hundred pertinent articles and books. The book is the work of a single author, thus ensuring uniformity and concision. It is intended for scientists, metallurgical engineers and senior technicians in research and development laboratories, design offices and quality departments, as well as for teachers and students in universities, technical colleges and other higher education establishments.
Описание: Diffraction Analysis of the Microstructure of Materials provides an overview of diffraction methods applied to the analysis of the microstructure of materials. Since crystallite size and the presence of lattice defects have a decisive influence on the properties of many engineering materials, information about this microstructure is of vital importance in developing and assessing materials for practical applications. The most powerful and usually non-destructive evaluation techniques available are X-ray and neutron diffraction. The book details, among other things, diffraction-line broadening methods for determining crystallite size and atomic-scale strain due, e.g. to dislocations, and methods for the analysis of residual (macroscale) stress. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of solid-state physics and supplies readers sufficient information to apply the methods themselves.
Описание: Interesting and new specific results of current theoretical and experimental work in various fields at the frontier of particle scattering and X-ray diffraction are reviewed in this volume. Special emphasis is placed on the study of the microstructure of solids, crystals and liquids, both classically and quantum mechanically. This gives the reader essential insights into the dynamics and properties of these states of matter. The authors address students interested in the physics of quantum solids, crystallography and material science as well as physical chemistry and computational physics.
Описание: This work systematically discusses the modern theory of propagation and interaction of elastic waves in solids with microstructure. Mathematical models of
solids taking into account microstructure, geometrical and physical nonlinearity, damage media, interaction of deformation and magnetic field are obtained. Different wave effects
characteristic of solids with microstructure are studied.
The opportunity to use these effects in problems of ultrasonic testing of materials and devices of constructions is
Описание: A material's various proprieties, such as strength, weight/density, elasticity, ductility, or other important structural or engineering behaviors, are based on its microscopic and nanoscale structures. This book provides an overview of recent advances in computational methods for linking phenomena in systems that span large ranges of time and spatial scales. Particular attention is given to predicting macroscopic properties based on subscale behaviors. Given the books extensive coverage of multi-scale methods for modeling both metallic and geologic materials, it will be an invaluable reading for graduate students, scientists, and practitioners alike.

Описание: The accelerating rate at which new materials are appearing, and transforming the engineering world, only serves to emphasize the vast potential for novel material structure and related performance. Microstructure Sensitive Design for Performance Optimization (MSDPO) embodies a new methodology for systematic design of material microstructure to meet the requirements of design in optimal ways. Intended for materials engineers and researchers in industry, government and academia as well as upper level undergraduate and graduate students studying material science and engineering, MSDPO provides a novel mathematical framework that facilitates a rigorous consideration of the material microstructure as a continuous design variable in the field of engineering design.
