Описание: Since the pacemaking and conduction system or PCS is vital for generating and synchronizing the heart beat, its dysfunction can be a direct cause of cardiac conduction disturbance, arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. A wealth of information has been collected over many years on the unique histological, morphological and phenotypic characteristics of specialized cardiac tissues and the cellular and molecular mechanics governing development of PCS tissues are now starting to be understood. This title draws together contributions from an international and interdisciplinary group of experts whose work is focused on both basic and clinical aspects of the topic. Coverage includes reviews of the structure and function of the developing PCS, discussion of the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating embryological development of PCS, studies on the molecular and cellular bases of PCS pathology, and reflections on how the identification of novel therapeutic interventions based on fundamental discoveries on the developmental biology of cardiac pacemaking and conduction tissues might ultimately impact on clinical medicine.

Описание: This new book is the only in-depth, single-author reference on heart development. Clearly written, with lavish colour illustrations, it provides a more clinical, systematic, up-to-date synthesis of the subject than any other volume, spanning the range from classic anatomic studies to recent findings in molecular biology. Author Margaret Kirby posits a unifying understanding of heart tube formation from the cardiogenic fields, and the book covers topics that are often omitted from discussions of heart development, such as myocardial function, cardiac innervation, conduction system development, evolutionary developmental biology of the heart, and myocardial stem cells. The book is beautifully illustrated by Karen Waldo, an artist who has collaborated with Dr. Kirby for many years.

Описание: Basic and clinical researchers from industry and academia detail the preclinical, clinical, and regulatory principles currently used to assess the cardiac safety of new drugs. The authors explain the parameters of cardiac safety at all stages of clinical research and drug development, including both the preclinical and pharmacogenomic aspects generally and the clinical methodologies and technical aspects for investigational drugs based on cardiac repolarization, as defined by the duration of the QTc interval. Additional chapters comprehensively review the application of electrocardiography in clinical research, the fundamentals of ECG interpretation in clinical trials, the statistical analysis plans for ECG data obtained in formal clinical trials, and the practical interpretation of the ECG results. Highlights include practical guidance on how to conduct a thorough ECG Trial in New Drug Development, how to use new ECG and web based technology in clinical research, and how to follow the new FDA requirements for ECG submissions.
