Описание: Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) is one of the great geniuses in the history of art, and his work has influenced a multitude of artists throughout Europe. This book shows how American painters and photographers cemented Cezanne`s legacy by spreading their respect and admiration for his vision with their own art, writings, and exhibitions.
Описание: This book explores the direct connections and collaborations of German and Russian artists and the affinities between both countries’ artistic development. Russian Modernism maps the Russian version of expressionism and puts it in the context of the history of 20th century art.
Russian Modernism is dedicated to the radical modernist movements in Russian and German art during the early years of the 20th century. Their development was parallel and often intertwined. Artists such as Vasily Kandinsky or Alexej von Jawlensky are claimed by the Germans but remain Russian artists for the Russians. The Burluk brothers, who became celebrities of the Russian radical art scene, participated in the first exhibition of the Blauer Reiter. Russian artists travelled to Germany and lived there, while their German counterparts were aware of what was shown in Moscow exhibition halls. The diverse art movement “expressionism” was formed in Germany at the beginning of the 1910s and was given the name by the critic Herwarth Walden. Members of groups such as Die Brucke and the Blauer Reiter were initially influenced by the French Fauves movement, and their Russian contemporaries also tried to find new artistic truth in Paris, ‘la Ville Lumiere’. However, both in Germany and Russia the new French influence underwent radical transformation. Beautifully illustrated and designed, this book provides an insight into the work of Russian and German artists in the early years of the 20th century.

Описание: With Silicon Valley in the north and Hollywood in the south, California has become a magnet for creative and entrepreneurial types from within the United States and around the world. Architects have not been immune to the Golden State's aesthetic and cultural draw. Here, in the melting pot of world cultures and native talent, modern residential architecture has been reborn.
From the seaside towns of Los Angeles to the rolling hills of San Francisco and the wine country of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, California's adventurous architects have reached back to the cultural and economic optimism of the 1950s to give modern architectural design a new look. With its mild climate and sun-filled days, California has always been a natural fit for modernism's tenets of open plans, indoor-outdoor living, and expansive window walls. There modernist design concepts have adapted easily to the 21st Century's demand for green architecture and energy conservation.
Many of the houses in California Cool are energy independent and built using either recycled or sustainable materials. California Cool includes contemporary work from some of modern architecture's progenitor's from the mid 20th century along with designs from the young practitioners of the 21st century, who can be found working out of converted warehouses and lofts in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Berkeley. From north to south, this beautifully illustrated book captures the rich, creative vibrancy of California's modern architectural presence.
Conceived by four of the most influential art historians of our time, this groundbreaking book has now been updated and expanded to include the most recent developments in contemporary art. The original authors have been joined by David Joselit to provide the most comprehensive history of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries ever published.
More than 120 articles are presented in a year-by-year structure, with each focusing on a crucial event from the creation of a seminal work to the opening of a major exhibition to tell the myriad stories of art from 1900 to the present. Key turning points and breakthroughs in modernism are explored, as are the antimodernist reactions that proposed alternative visions of art and the world. The book s flexible structure and extensive cross-referencing allow readers to follow the many developments in the art world, from the influence of surrealism to the emergence of minimalism. A four-part introduction outlines the methodologies governing the discipline of art history, and two roundtable discussions examine the questions raised by the past while looking ahead to the future.

Описание: This is the first comprehensive survey of Modernist graphic design as it emerged in America in the period from 1920 and 1960 in various media--advertising, information design, brand identity, magazine design, book design, and posters. It examines the great works which by mid-century had defined American graphic design. The book begins with a section devoted to the emergence of Modernism and its major historical influence, such as European avant-garde movements, popular culture, educational innovations such as the Bauhaus School, architecture, industrial design, and photography. The heart of the book includes the key works of mid-century Modernism as it matured into a fully-formed American style, bringing together such great names as Alexey Brodovitch, Lester Beall, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Will Burtin, and Alvin Lustig. The final section looks at the impact of and reactions to this new movement as graphic design in America matured in the 1960s and beyond.

Описание: In the period from 1890 to 1940, landscape architects organized as a profession distinct from art and architecture, bringing to the fore a variety of theories and aspirations--to influence urban growth, reinforce national identity, and shape land conservation and land-use planning, among other goals--in response to challenges posed by rapid change. The twelve essays included in this exceptional volume grapple with the definition and significance of modernism in landscape design during this transformative era.
An international roster of leading landscape historians discuss established and less recognized designers, such as Maria Teresa Parpagliolo, who sought to define the modern Italian garden, or Benito Javier Carrasco, who made recreational green space a public amenity in Buenos Aires. Examining gardens and landscapes of all scales and purposes, from private villa gardens to civic spaces, these essays contribute original insight and rigorous research to the growing field of landscape studies.

Описание: In the 1920s, London was a city on the cusp of change. Just as dance halls and jazz-age decadence displaced wartime austerity, a new generation of artists and designers sought to enliven the city's architecture, erecting dazzling buildings in the emerging art deco style. In contrast with the aging Victorian structures that dotted the city, these bright and colorful buildings--from the Hoover factory to the Ideal House by Raymond Hood, who later designed New York's Rockefeller Center--communicated the city's aspirations as a thriving, modern metropolis. In the decades since, London's art deco buildings have lost none of their appeal. Millions of visitors gaze up at the headquarters of the Daily Telegraph and the nearby Daily Express, take in the elegance of Eltham Palace, or sip a martini at the Savoy. The city's most popular art deco attraction, however, is the London Underground, which boasts a series of art deco and modernist stations, designed throughout the 1920s and '30s by noted architect Charles Holden. In Modernism London Style, architectural historian Christoph Rauhut, with the help of three hundred photographs by Niels Lehmann, captures the architectural art deco heritage of London in a thrilling photographic tour. A portrait of the city during the interwar years, it chronicles the creativity of the artists and designers of the period--and the currents in the city's culture that helped shape their work. Insightful essays and an introduction by architecture scholar Adam Caruso shed light on some of the key features that characterize art deco, from floral and animal motifs to Egyptian themes. For readers planning a trip to London and hoping to place these striking buildings, the book also includes a detailed register and maps.
