Описание: Infective endocarditis has a mortality of 25-30 per cent despite advances in treatment. Because symptoms are often non-specific, diagnosis is delayed for up to several weeks, sometimes with disastrous consequences. Diagnosis and assessment involve much more than simply identifying an infecting organism. It requires knowledge of valve(s) affected and of the extent of valvular damage - complications such as abscess formation, emboli and cardiac failure have to be evaluated. Without this information, the timing of correct treatment is impossible.
