Описание: The passages in Wordsworth's Prelude known as the 'spots of time' have always been regarded as important and impressive but have seldom been satisfactorily explained. Whilst there is general agreement about how well they are written, there is none at all about what they might mean. David Ellis sets out to resolve this paradox and, since the passages which concern him deal with very private moments in Wordsworth's life and have an interest which is largely psychological, he considers how far a knowledge of Freud might be relevant to their understanding. His attempt to clarify what is at once the most intriguing and baffling aspect of Wordsworth's great autobiographical poem leads Ellis to make challenging suggestions about how the whole work should be read. This is a book for the student and general reader of Wordsworth as well as for specialists. It should also appeal to those with an interest in the nature of autobiography or the use (and the misuse) of psych-analytic concepts in literary interpretation.

Описание: In this book Hugh Sykes Davies - novelist, poet and distinguished literary critic - addresses Wordworth's major poetry. Language, and its interaction with genius, is his central concern; but questions about Freud, Coleridge and the Romantic Imagination are raised and answered in the course of his stimulating survey. It reconstructs the poet's relationship with Mary Hutchinson and his sister Dorothy, focusing on the Dove Cottage m?nage during Wordsworth's most productive years. A remarkable combination of analytic and empathic intelligence, this book should earn a place among the few essential studies of the poet. Hugh Sykes Davies died in 1984, and this 1987 book was prepared for publication by John Kerrigan, a colleague at St John's College, Cambridge, and Jonathan Wordsworth, chairman of The Dove Cottage Trust, to which the author gave many years support as Trustee.

Описание: At the heart of Wordsworth's concerns is the question of how travel - both foreign and everyday - might also become an adventure into philosophy itself. This is an art of travel both as an approach to experience - one that draws on habits in order to revise them in the shock of new - and as a poetic approach that gives voice to the singular and foreign through the unique shapes of verse. Close readings of Wordsworth's 'pictures of Nature, Man, and Society' show how the natural is entangled with - and not simply opposed to, as many critics have suggested - the social, the political and the historical in this verse. This book draws on both eighteenth-century anthropology and travel literature, and debates in modern critical theory, to highlight Wordsworth's remarkable originality and his ongoing ability to transform our theoretical prejudgements in the unknown territory of the travel encounter.

Описание: This two-volume biography of William Wordsworth (1770–1850) was published in 1851 by his nephew, Christopher (1807–85), a scholar who later became bishop of Lincoln. The introductory chapter argues against the presentation of a 'life', or a critical assessment of Wordsworth's works. The poet felt strongly that the life was in the works, and that they should 'plead their own cause before the tribune of Posterity'. Nevertheless, an elucidation of the facts of Wordsworth's life would - precisely because his poems are so personal - help the reader to understand his verse; and to be best understood, it should be studied chronologically, for which a 'biographical commentary' would be essential. Christopher Wordsworth, having agreed to undertake this task, asked his uncle for a 'brief sketch of the most prominent circumstances of his life'; the remainder of Volume 1 takes the biography up to 1810.
