Описание: From the B-17 Flying Fortress and PBY Catalina, via the F-4 Phantom to the F-15I Thunder, Israeli Air Force 69 Squadron, the Hammers, have always been the long-range, heavy bombing element of Israeli air power. 69 Sqdn. fought in six wars and flew thousands of missions. The first Hammers mission was the bombardment of Cairo in July 1948. The final B-17 missions were flown during the 1956 Suez War, the last of the Flying Fortresses to bomb operationally anywhere. From 1969, the Hammers flew the legendary F-4 through participation in the War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War and the Lebanon War. Flying the F-15I since 1998, the Hammers story of operations, aircraft and persons is the essence of this book that unveils, for the first time ever, the full story of Israeli B-17 operations, the complete story of how the Israeli Phantoms defeated the Syrian SAM network in Lebanon, the thundering introduction of the F-15I into Israeli service, and much more.

Описание: Volume five of the Battle Colors series shifts to the Pacific Theater of Operations with a focus on the Fifth, Seventh, Eleventh and Thirteenth U.S. Army Air Forces. As with previous volumes the primary emphasis of this work is group/squadron emblems in addition to combat aircraft tactical markings. Extensive research has resulted in the most complete assemblage of World War II era AAF/PTO combat insignia yet compiled. As in all Battle Colors volumes, these insignia images include both authorized as well as unofficial versions, featuring common variations representative of the time. Historical period photographs depicting the applications of unauthorized emblems are included in the text, providing empirical proof as to their existence and use. All emblems have been carefully recreated to reflect, as nearly as possible, the original artwork of their designers.

Описание: Here at last is the exciting, detailed story of the U.S. Eighth Air Forces only Radar Countermeasure squadron that flew from England duing World War II. This book tells of the men of the elite 36th Bomb Squadron and the special operations they flew in modified B-24s to jam the German radar which controlled the fighter and flak batteries. Here too is the story of the men behind the scenes who sought to develop an extension of modern air warfare into the electronic arena and keep ahead of German scientists in the "War in the Ether." This chronological account gathered from secret records, personal diaries, and interviews with the "Old Crows" describes the night missions with the Royal Air Force and the daylight missions with the Eighth. The first jamming mission on the morning of D-Day "contributed materially to the success of the landings on the beachhead." Later missions during the Battle of the Bulge involved trickery, ingenious deception, spoofs, and tank communications jamming. This squadron flew on bad weather days, when the rest of the Eighth Air Force stood down, and paid its price in blood. Before the war in Europe ended the 36th Bomb Squadron screened Eighth Air Force radio transmissions to stop the enemy from learning important mission details. Here now is the story of how this secret squadron saved many Allied lives during World War II. Included are over 330 rare photographs and illustrations never before published.
Описание: This second volume focuses on the Fighter Groups, Scouting Force and Special Operations units of the Mighty Eighth. Battle Colors approaches a visual subject in a visual manner utilizing full color illustrations and wartime photos.
Описание: This is the true story of one of the most successful of all United States Navy Fighting Squadrons in World War II. They were the top guns of their day and came to be feared by the Japanese fighter pilots who described them as attacks on us by wolves. Their victorious achievements are as follows: 152 Japanese planes destroyed in the air and two on the ground in only 76 days of combat; five small enemy cargo ships and 17 barges carrying troops and supplies sent to the bottom of the sea. No bomber escorted by them was lost to enemy aircraft and no ship covered by them was ever hit by bomb or aerial torpedo. The squadron had thirteen aces and two more who later went on to become aces with VF-84 (combat veterans of VF-17 composed the nucleus of this squadron). They were the first Navy squadron into combat action with the new Chance Vought Corsair and were instrumental in proving this powerful new fighter to the Navy. VF-17 were known as the Skull and Crossbones squadron and Blackburns Irregulars having adopted the old pirates ensign of the Jolly Roger as the squadron insignia; since World War II they have become known as the Jolly Rogers. The Skull and Crossbones Squadron is a mission by mission chronicle of all the squadrons great air battles. Also included are more than 350 photographs and detailed appendices listing all squadron aces, every confirmed victory and war diary.

Описание: This book is the first complete history of the American Air Services 147th Aero Squadron in World War I and provides, at last, an understanding of the role of this least known unit of the 1st Pursuit Group. This detailed account tells how various individuals responded as volunteers, describes the trials of training in Texas and Canada, explains the often ignored problems of transporting across the Atlantic and English Channel, and then reveals the thrilling, frustrating, and heroic combat actions of the 147th over the Western Front up to the Armistice.
Описание: As one of seventeen night fighter squadrons established during the course of World War II, the 421st Night Fighter Squadron carried the war into the night skies over the battlefields of the Southwest Pacific when most other fighter squadrons remained on the ground. In the squadrons years of service they would be based in a number of places ranging from New Guinea, Leyte, and finally ending up as an Occupational squadron in Japan after the war. The 421st NFS would be credited with thirteen kills, three damaged, one probable, and a number they simply never received credit for. On February 2, 1945 the 421st NFS would finally be deactivated and overnight become the 68th Fighter Squadron (All Weather). The history of the 421st however, would by no means end there. The 421st would again rise in later years as the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron and fight in the skies of Vietnam, and later be one of the first squadrons flying in Operation Desert Storm true to its tradition the 421st would fly night missions over Iraq.
