Описание: This thorough study of the history, development and service of floatplanes carried on battleships and cruisers documents a long neglected subject for the first time in over 400 photographs. From the 1920s through World War II, aircraft operating from catapults were used for spotting gunfire and scouting ahead of the fleet. Flying these planes was unique and the dramatic launching and recovery operations are covered by both photographs and text. Colors and markings are detailed and special attention has been paid to images showing catapult and ship details for both the ship and aircraft modeler. The assignment of all aircraft by type, totals, squadrons and ship is given annually from 1942 to 1949. In addition to rare photos of all of the experimental aircraft that were tested for this purpose, an addition chapter covers floatplanes used on small ships and submarine. William Larkins is also author of The Ford Tri-Motor 1926-1992, and U.S. Navy Aircraft 1921-1941, U.S. Marine Corps Aircraft 1914-1959(both titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.).
Описание: Volume five of the Battle Colors series shifts to the Pacific Theater of Operations with a focus on the Fifth, Seventh, Eleventh and Thirteenth U.S. Army Air Forces. As with previous volumes the primary emphasis of this work is group/squadron emblems in addition to combat aircraft tactical markings. Extensive research has resulted in the most complete assemblage of World War II era AAF/PTO combat insignia yet compiled. As in all Battle Colors volumes, these insignia images include both authorized as well as unofficial versions, featuring common variations representative of the time. Historical period photographs depicting the applications of unauthorized emblems are included in the text, providing empirical proof as to their existence and use. All emblems have been carefully recreated to reflect, as nearly as possible, the original artwork of their designers.

Описание: The Horten Brothers and Their All-Wing Aircraft is the heretofore untold true story of Reimar, Wolfram, and Walter Hortens remarkable aeronautical achievements with the all-wing planform between 1933 and 1945 as told to aviation biographer David Myhra. Talking daily with Reimar Horten at his ranch at the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Argentina for two months, and also with Walter in Baden Baden, Germany, the two brothers described in detail their struggles in Nazi controlled Germany to perfect the all-wing planform. Astounding as their real-life story is of itself, the Horten brothers gave David Myhra hundreds of photographs to illustrate this new volume. In this remarkable book David Myhra tells the true story of the Horten brothers and their all-wing aircraft through the use of over 735 photos and three-view line drawings of their entire all-wing line. Most of these photos and drawings have not been available to the public until now. Even more astonishing, the Hortens, ridiculed in the mid-1930s for wasting their genius on silly all-wing aircraft, would be the only ones called on by Hermann G?ring in December 1944 to build an all-wing Amerika atomic bomber and save Deutschland from certain and final destruction by the Allies through a negotiated peace settlement. The Horten Ho 18 Amerika Bomber was not meant to be. But it might have been if the war had not ended in May 1945 but, say, May 1946. This, then, is the fascinating true story of those naive boy-designers from Bonn, the Horten brothers and their silly all-wing airplanes.
Описание: In this concise study, the infamous Luftwaffe Stukas of World War II are shown in their earlier use during the Spanish Civil War as part of the Legion Condor. Using text and photographic material from both Spanish and German archives, the famous Junkers Ju 87 and the lesser known Henschel Hs 123 are shown in rare war-era photographs, as well as in color profiles. The operational and technical details of both dive-bomber aircraft types are also presented, as well as the histories of the units that flew them.
Описание: The campaign and commemorative medals of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps frame an interesting evolution in our countrys military development and willingness to use this power on a worldwide basis. It traces their roots from our own Civil War to assuming the stature of the worlds super power. This work provides an in depth overview of not only the history and development of each campaign medal, but also the historical significance of the events surrounding the establishment of each medal. Informative and insightful glimpses of some of the main characters in this history, like Dewey, Sampson. DeLong, Butler, Hanneken, Peary and Byrd are threaded through this work. The book traces the events and their corresponding medals through our current involvement in the Bosnia peacekeeping mission. The book also covers, in great detail, several of the more important commemorative medals which were often struck on a limited basis to account for the lack of appropriate official federal awards. In many cases, these commemorative medals reflect exacting craftsmanship and unusual design features when compared to the campaign medals. All medals are exquisitely photographed in color with the exception of a few of the rare commemorative medals, which are reproduced in black and white. The work also covers a number of interesting foreign awards which have accompanied the award of a number of U.S. campaign medals. This work, which is well organized and easy to read, proves to be an interesting and informative reference work for the collector of these Navy and Marine Corps medals. A value guide is included. Ed Emering is also the author of Orders, Decorations and Badges of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.).
Описание: This new study of the sea-going Phantoms includes contributions from over a hundred aircrew and maintainers who were involved in the Phantoms success from the earliest service development flying to its twilight years in the Reserve units. There are personal accounts of MiG battles from more than a dozen MiG killers, first-hand descriptions of the F-4s introduction into combat with the Marines as a CAS and reconnaissance aircraft, memories of Bear intercepts on Mediterranean cruises, narratives covering the aircrafts service into the 1980s, and much more. These voices are blended with a detailed technical and developmental description of the aircraft, supported by comprehensive appendices and over 450 photos in color and black and white.
Описание: A detailed pictorial review of U.S. Navy airplanes from the end of World War I to the present day. All mission types are covered, including fighters, scout dive and torpedo bombers, patrol planes, utility planes, and trainers. Many variants of basic types are shown with photos and data from informative captions. An introduction is provided for each mission category, and explanations of airplane designations are provided. Striking changes in U.S. naval airplane designs through almost eight decades of progress can be seen from the earliest wood, wire, and fabric craft to the latest types entering the naval inventory. The photo coverage is excellent, with many never before published pictures of Navy types.
