Описание: A revealing look at the fashion revolution of the 1960s and ’70s through the groundbreaking, hip, and now-legendary London emporium Biba, this book looks at “the most beautiful store in the world.” Biba, founded in 1963 by designer Barbara Hulanicki, quickly gained cult status and outgrew several locations before the five-story “Big Biba” opened in 1973. More than a store, it was a haven of cool for artists, movie stars, and rock musicians. This book tells the story of the Biba decade, and how the label revolutionized retail and fashion culture. With a wealth of previously unpublished material, including full-color facsimiles of the six luxurious Biba catalogs and archival photographs, The Biba Decade looks at the first retailer to bring affordable fashion to young consumers. Stunning new photography documents the unique Biba look, and the designer and her contemporaries offer their personal insights.

Описание: Biba remains one of the most evocative names in British design history. Founded as ail order business by Barbara Hulanicki in 1964, and soon expanding into its own retail premises, it pioneered a new style, mixing the contemporary with Art Nouveau, Art Deco and the golden age of Hollywood, dressing itself in the richly luxuriant colours of a bygone time. In the years up to its spectacular crash in 1975, it played a key part in making London the most fashionable city in the world. And in its final glorious incarnation in Kensington High Street, as the first new department store to open in the capital since the War, it created a potent myth that lives on even amongst many who never experienced it first hand. Biba also brought the cutting edge of couture to the masses. Brigitte Bardot, Twiggy and Yoko Ono shopped there, whilst Sonny and Cher, Mick and Bianca, and David and Angie were regular visitors, but the store was never the exclusive preserve of the rich and famous: prices were kept deliberately low, and anyone who could tolerate the disdainful inefficiency of the staff was encouraged to soak up the glamour of a unique shopping experience. Biba: The Biba Experience centres on newly commissioned photographs of the largest collection of Biba in the world, put together by Pari, who began collecting Biba in the 1980s and has accumulated just under 500 pieces of Biba fashion items and ephemera covering the entire history of the company. Everything from dresses and trouser suits through original sketches and patterns to playing cards and soap powder is represented. Pari acquired a taste for decadent style while growing up in the environment of her aunt's prestigious striptease night club in the '70s. This lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced book is intended for those interested in fashion and graphic design of the '60s and '70s, from a creative and historical standpoint, plus the huge number of people who remember Biba from the period with such affection.
Описание: Big Biba, the final flowering of Barbara Hulanicki's legendary Biba store in London, was a shop like no other, before or since. It was a fabulous fantasy palace that brought the indulgence of Hollywood to the world of retail. Big Biba lasted just two years before it fell victim to recession, but the myth of the most beautiful store in the world continues to enchant both its former habitues and those who came to it too late.Founded as a corner-shop selling just one dress, Biba had grown in less than a decade to become a seven-storey department store filled with own-brand products throughout. Here the committed Bibaphile could buy not only a new wardrobe, fully co-ordinated from head to toe, but also a complete range of cosmetics and soft furnishings, together with the washing powder to care for her clothes, and food for both herself and her pets, all presented in the distinctive Biba packaging. Alternatively she could just hang out, either lounging in the shop-windows (Biba didn't do window-displays), or sipping cocktails upstairs amongst the flamingos that lived in the Roof Garden, or in the Rainbow Room, where on a good night there might be a live performance by the likes of the New York Dolls, Liberace or The Manhattan Transfer.Welcome to Big Biba is the first book dedicated entirely to this dreamland, with over 150 colour photographs - most published here for the first time - of the store and of the products and graphics created for the various departments, from bathrooms to ball-gowns, from cosmetics to colouring-books.Styled by Steven Thomas, the designer of Big Biba itself, and with text by Alwyn W Turner, author of The Biba Experience, this book evokes the glamour, humour and fantasy of the store, the audacious style that could turn a shop girl into a Hollywood star.
