ќписание: The great questions that challenge our understanding of the global carbon cycle are: What are the basic oceanic mechanisms that control the oceanic carbon reservoirs and the partitioning of carbon between the ocean and the atmosphere? How do these mechanisms depend on the state of the climate system and how does the carbon cycle feed back to the climate? What is the current rate at which fossil fuel carbon dioxide is absorbed by the oceans and how might this change in the future? The 11 peer-reviewed chapters in this book, all written by acknowledged experts in their field, are all linked by the overarching questions. Many significant areas are touched on and the book provides the most up-to-date synthesis of the state-of-the-art research in ocean carbon cycle and climate related science.

ќписание: In the common sense, migration is considered by many authors as a mechanism for avoiding unfavorable environments by moving to expectedly more auspicious locations at different times. In other terms, migration may represent the seasonal movement of organisms from place to place owing to the change in the environmental conditions. Consequently, two important questions arise to mind, why do some animals migrate? How would migration affect the gene pool? Whatever are the answers, the cost of migration is the power required to move to a different location and the high possibility of death as a result of this movement. The editor presents a suitable collection of topics, to achieve the goal of this book, which is explaining the migration of organisms through many examples of different groups of marine and non-marine organisms, ranging from micro-invertebrates to large vertebrates (mammals), and focusing on several aspects that are not collected together.

ќписание: This research level text focuses on the influence of climate variability on the marine ecosystems of the North Atlantic. The ecological impact of climate variability on population dynamics is addressed at the full range of trophic levels, from phytoplankton through zooplankton and fish to marine birds. Climate effects on biodiversity and community structure are also examined. Forty scientists from around the world synthesize what is currently known about how climate affects the ecological systems of the North Atlantic and then place these insights within a broader ecological perspective. Many of the general features of the North Atlantic region are also seen in other marine ecosystems as well as terrestrial and freshwater systems. The final section of the book makes these generalities more explicit, so as to stimulate communication and promote co-operation amongst researchers who may previously have worked in semi-isolation.

ќписание: This book is an expanded version of "The Applied Dynamics of Ocean Surface Waves". It presents theoretical topics on ocean wave dynamics, including basic principles and applications in coastal and offshore engineering as well as coastal oceanography. Advanced analytical and numerical techniques are applied, such as singular perturbations. In this expanded version, three chapters on recent developments have been added. The first is on multiple scattering by periodic or random bathymetry. The second is on Zakharov's theory of nonlinear wave fields with broad spectra. The third is an extensive discussion of powerful numerical techniques for highly non-linear waves. Other new topics include infragravity waves, upstream solitons, Venice storm gates, etc. In addition, there are many new exercises. "Theory and Applications of Ocean Surface Waves" will be invaluable for graduate students and researchers in coastal and ocean engineering, geophysical fluid dynamicists interested in water waves, and theoretical scientists and applied mathematicians wishing to develop new techniques for challenging problems or to apply techniques existing elsewhere.

ќписание: In this volume, an improved Integrated Assessment methodology is used to analyze climate change impacts on agriculture, water resources, unmanaged ecosystems, irrigation, and land use in the United States and the economic implications of these impacts. This book contains a series of papers documenting the methods, models, analysis, and results of this integrated assessment for a wide-ranging set of scenarios describing future climate change. Innovations described include the integration of water resource and agricultural modeling and the refinement of an agriculture and land-use economics model to incorporate results from process-level ecosystem models of agriculture, water, and natural ecosystem resources. Scenarios selected for this study address a range of uncertainties associated with choice of climate model, presence or absence of a вАШCO2-fertilization effectвАЩ, impacts on international trade in agricultural commodities, and their consequences for producers and consumers. Reprinted from Climatic Change, Vol. 69, No. 1, 2005

ќписание: The field of physical oceanography has matured to a point where it is now conceivable to combine numerical models and observations via data assimilation in order to provide ocean prediction products on various spatial and time scales. As a result, many nations have begun large-scale efforts to provide routine products to the oceanographic community and started to develop operational oceanography systems. The Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) provides a framework for these efforts, i.e., a global system of observations, communications, modeling, and assimilation that will deliver regular, comprehensive information on the state of the oceans, in a way that will promote and engender wide utility and availability of this resource for maximum benefit to the community. The societal benefit of this experiment will be an increased knowledge of the marine environment and ocean climate, predictive skills for societal, industrial, and commercial benefit and tactical and strategic advantage, as well as the provision of a comprehensive and integrated approach to the oceans. We therefore considered it timely, given the international context, to bring together leading scientists, system developers, and application providers to present an integrated view of oceanography. The chapters collected in this volume cover a wide range of topics and summarize our present knowledge in ocean modeling, ocean observing systems, and data assimilation.

ќписание: The purpose of the book is to link together knowledge obtained in the observation of mud volcanism and local seismicity. Geological, Seismological, Geophysical and Geochemical parameters are considered. The book represents the modern state of the art after many decades of observations. The book fills an editorial gap and improves knowledge in the fields of natural risks and energy resources. Mud volcanism occurs both onshore and offshore in many places of the world. Mud volcanic phenomena have been to date described by local monographs or by articles published in scientific journals and no books were published on topics highlighting the link between mud volcanism, geodynamics and seismicity. Mud volcanism has been recognized to be generally related to hydrocarbon deposits, seismotectonic activity and to orogenic belts. In spite of the large amount of data collected by scientists working in different disciplines - geophysics, geochemistry, structural geology, marine geology, hydrocarbon geosciences etc., a comprehensive and complete understanding of mud volcanic phenomena is hard to find in current scientific literature. Finally a book that presents up-to-date knowledge breaking traditional disciplinary walls.

ќписание: Coastal zones form a huge variety of natural environments, providing rich resources to humans. They are the place where active interaction occurs between land-based activities and ocean environments. They have attracted human population to form mega cities and economic developments on the coasts, which in turn has caused tremendous pressures on the natural environment. The Asia and Pacific region is a center of such dynamics. It is home to the worldвАЩs largest region of coral reefs and mangroves. It accommodates two-thirds of the worldвАЩs human population and its economic activities have the highest growth rate in the world. Ongoing degradation of the environment resulting from deforestation, desertification, and over-harvesting is becoming a matter of great concern, as floods and droughts occur as a result of this degradation. The Asia-Pacific also forms part of the вАШPacific Rim of FireвАЩ and is, therefore, vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis, as the world is aware of after the Sumatra earthquake tsunami on 26 December 2004. Threats of global environmental change such as climate change and sea-level rise will superpose on such problems. Therefore, appropriate policies and measures are needed for the coastal management, both for the local and global trends. This book gives an overview of the state-of-the-art understanding on the drivers, state, and responses to the coastal environmental changes in the Asia and Pacific region. It will provide excellent perspectives for what is and will be going on in the region to researchers, students, policy makers, coastal managers and other stakeholders.
