Описание: The book offers an explanation of unemployment based on a model of wage bargaining between a trade union and an employers' association. The theoretical model emphasizes the importance of distributional fairness in wage negotiations, especially with regard to factor taxation. This is achieved by the application of the proportional solution to the bargaining problem. It is shown, that this solution concept delivers a reasonable model of long run wage determination in which the natural rate of unemployment is independent of productivity growth. Taxes on labour and capital are identified as important determinants of equilibrium employment, the labour tax having a negative, the capital income tax having a positive effect. The latter result distinguishes the model from the standard literature. An empirical test using cointegration methods with West German data confirms the theoretical predictions.

Описание: Looks at the distribution of income and wealth and the effects that this has on the macroeconomy, and vice versa. Taking stock of results and methods developed in the context of the 1990s revival of growth theory, this book focuses on capital accumulation and long-run growth.
Описание: The aim of this book is to analyse specific sets of macro and structural policies in selected Eastern European countries. The book includes studies on the major Western CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, plus a set of cross-country and regional studies. The focus is on the link between sustained economic growth and macro and structural economic policies in the CIS countries where recovery lagged until recently. By analysing how government policy can affect the relevant variables and behavioural framework in an economy and how these countries can achieve stability and engage in micro-structural reforms for long-run growth, the book contributes importantly to the discussion about the economic prospects of the CIS countries.

Описание:
Top economists consider how to conduct policy in a world where previous beliefs have been shattered by the recent financial and economic crises.
Since 2008, economic policymakers and researchers have occupied a brave new economic world. Previous consensuses have been upended, former assumptions have been cast into doubt, and new approaches have yet to stand the test of time. Policymakers have been forced to improvise and researchers to rethink basic theory. George Akerlof, Nobel Laureate and one of this volume's editors, compares the crisis to a cat stuck in a tree, afraid to move. In April 2013, the International Monetary Fund brought together leading economists and economic policymakers to discuss the slowly emerging contours of the macroeconomic future. This book offers their combined insights.
The editors and contributors -- who include the Nobel Laureate and bestselling author Joseph Stiglitz, Federal Reserve Vice Chair Janet Yellen, and the former Governor of the Bank of Israel Stanley Fischer -- consider the lessons learned from the crisis and its aftermath. They discuss, among other things, post-crisis questions about the traditional policy focus on inflation; macroprudential tools (which focus on the stability of the entire financial system rather than of individual firms) and their effectiveness; fiscal stimulus, public debt, and fiscal consolidation; and exchange rate arrangements.
Описание: The book focuses on the recent experience of Latin America economies with designing, announcing, and implementing monetary policies with different internal and external anchors. Given the often dismal track record of monetary stabilization in Latin America, it deals primarily with the conditions of the economies such as their exposure to real exogenous shocks, high dollarization, regulated and segmented labor markets, lack of reputation of past policies and monetary institutions, and turbulences from deep financial and currency crises. Lessons from European monetary integration are taken into consideration as well as regimes between the extremes of full exchange rate flexibility and fixed exchange rates applied in other emerging markets. Finally, the role which regional integration in Latin America can play to reduce the extent of asymmetric shocks is discussed as a companion piece to joint efforts to fight monetary instability.
Описание: This book analyzes the dynamic macroeconomic effects of public capital in industrialized countries. The issue of whether public capital is productive has received a great deal of recent attention. Yet, existing empirical analyses have been limited to a small set of countries. This book presents a new database that provides internationally comparable capital stock estimates for 22 OECD countries for the 1960-2001 period. Building on this database, the book estimates the dynamic effects of public capital using a variety of econometric methods. The results suggest that public capital is productive in OECD countries on average. The theoretical analysis based on a dynamic general equilibrium model shows that the effects of public capital depend crucially on the way the government chooses to finance additional spending.
Описание: Macroeconomic Policy is an applications oriented text designed for individuals who desire a hands-on approach to analyzing the effects of fiscal and monetary policies. The book demystifies the linkages between monetary and fiscal policies and key macroeconomic variables such as income, unemployment, inflation and interest rates. MBA and Executive MBA students who appreciate the importance of monetary and fiscal analysis will find this text to be right on target. Financial analysts and individual investors who need to strip away economic myths and jargon and systematically examine and understand the effects of macro policies will also find the book extremely useful. A unique feature of this book is the extensive use of specially written "newspaper" articles designed to simulate current macroeconomic news. Topics such as unemployment, soft landings, overheated economies, asset-price bubbles, liquidity traps, hyperinflations, and exchange rate meltdowns are incorporated in these articles. Each chapter contains exercises that enable the reader to relate specific underlined passages in these articles to the theory presented in preceding chapters. This distinctive approach ensures real-world applicability, and supporting diagrams further enable the reader to relate current economic news to the theoretical material discussed. Macroeconomic Policy is designed for a global audience. A key feature of this book is its emphasis on the role of expectations and "paradigm shifts" in implementing fiscal and monetary policies, both in developed as well as in emerging economies. This approach explains why once-successful macroeconomic models suddenly cease to be effective, and why Keynesian as well as Supply-Side models can legitimately coexist in several developed economies.

Описание: Following the acquisition of its sovereignty from the Netherlands in 1949, Indonesia experienced serious economic and political problems during the 1950s and 1960s, before entering a three-decade-long period of rapid economic growth. Hard-hit by the financial crisis of the late 1990s, Indonesia undertook a wide range of economic and financial reforms. These reforms served to prepare it well for the 2007-08 global financial crisis, through which Indonesia passed relatively unscathed. Drawing on empirical research, this book presents a comprehensive empirical study on the key macroeconomic relations and monetary policy issues in Indonesia. The book analyses monetary, fiscal and exchange-rate policies, looking at their interactions and impacts on the economy. It demonstrates how important macroeconomic management for monetary and financial stability is to sustained national economic growth and development. Data from the 1970s is compared and contrasted with 1950s data to analyse macroeconomic policies and issues in an historical context. Statistical and econometric techniques are juxtaposed with general empirical results to supplement informative discussion of macroeconomic and monetary developments. This book is a useful contribution to studies on macroeconomics and international development, as well as Southeast Asian studies.

Описание: A key objective of the Central European Economies (CEE) on their transition path from planned to more market-oriented economies has been membership of the European Union (EU). The start of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in 1999 has added membership of the EMU to the agenda for the CEEs. The task of the so-called VisГЁgrad countries (the Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary and Poland) of preparing for EU and EMU membership is the key theme underlying the papers contained in this volume. There are many issues to be resolved before the VisГЁgrad countries are admitted into the EU, and this volume focuses on the issues relating to macroeconomic policies and financial sector structures. The chapters of Central Europe Towards Monetary Union: Macroeconomic Underpinnings and Financial Reputation contain new theoretical and empirical results and also comprehensive institutional overviews. The intended readership of the book is policy makers and economists working in the academic and financial sectors.
Описание: Within the New Consensus Macroeconomics, monetary policy is upgraded while fiscal policy is downgraded. This new monetary policy has been the main instrument of policy under the guise of inflation targeting, an approach pursued by a number of central banks worldwide. This book raises problems relating to this new monetary and macroeconomic policy.
