Описание: This new edition is a major contribution to botanical and ecological literature, and provides comprehensive coverage of the major vegetation types of North America from the arctic tundra of Alaska to the tropical forests of Central America. Each chapter describes the composition, architecture, environment, and conservation status of each ecosystem. In addition, information is included on the abiotic environment, paleoecology, productivity, nutrient cycling, autoecological behavior of dominant species, environmental issues, management problems, the role of natural disturbance, and critical areas for future research. This new edition has additional chapters on freshwater wetlands, coastal marine wetlands, temperate Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Hawaiian Islands. Every chapter has been thoroughly updated and now includes information on habitat loss and restoration-preservation programs. This is an outstanding new edition of a well-received text and it is essential reading for students and researchers in plant science, ecology, and conservation.
Описание: This book is a landmark study of the Holocene evolution and functioning of a suite of seasonal wetland basins in the temperate coastal zone of Western Australia. In 2001, a series of discrete small scale wetlands on the Becher cuspate foreland in Western Australia, were nominated as a Ramsar site because of their scientific values. These values pertained to their setting, their method of formation and deepening, their history of infilling, their complex hydrological mechanisms, and their dynamic hydrochemical and vegetation responses. The wetlands were the subjects of intense curiosity, observation, measurement, and experiment, for over 10 years. The results of this interest and passion are presented here in order to demonstrate the considerable importance of what lay beneath the ordinary surface.Amongst the new ideas presented in the book are the importance of stratigraphy in understanding wetland development, the significance of physiographic setting in determining wetland development, and the unravelling of several different evolutionary pathways in wetlands of the same basic origin.The book would be of interest to a great variety of readers such as university researchers/students in the fields of geography, ecology, environmental science/engineering, botany and biology, and also would be of benefit to water/soil resource managers, land management planners, conservation agencies and environmental management/protection agencies.
Описание: This book covers the terrestrial ecology, vegetation, biogeographical patterns and biodiversity of Yakutia, Siberia, a land with enormously extensive ecosystems that function on top of huge layers of permafrost and are exposed to great extremes of weather.

Описание: The Australian vegetation is the end result of a remarkable history of climate change, latitudinal change, continental isolation, soil evolution, interaction with an evolving fauna, fire and human impact. This book presents a detailed synopsis of the critical events which led to the evolution of the unique Australian flora and the wide variety of vegetation types contained within it. The first part of the book details the past continental relationships of Australia, its palaeoclimate, fauna, and the evolution of its landforms since the rise to dominance of the angiosperms at the beginning of the Cretaceous period. A detailed summary of the palaeobotanical record is then presented. The palynological record gives an overview of the vegetation, and the distribution of important taxa within it, while the macrofossil record is used to trace the evolution of critical taxa.

Описание: Post-glacial Vegetation of Canada brings together all the available information about the complex history of vegetational and environmental change in Canada since the last Ice Age. As the lands began to emerge from under the ice, they provided a large, varied setting for the re-establishment of highly diverse plant cover ranging from the modern tropical rain forests to the arctic tundra. Professor Ritchie discusses the roles of climactic change, wildfires, diseases, and biological factors in controlling the emerging patterns of new plant growth. The initial chapters present a balanced review of the modern bioclimates and vegetation of Canada as an introduction to the historical record. A review of the present pollen registration and the autecology of the important plant taxa is provided by examining the fossil record, derived primarily from pollen evidence. Students and researchers in the natural history of Canada and the Northern regions will find Post-glacial Vegetation of Canada a source of much information. It will also appeal to those with interests in botany, geography, geology, archaeology, and paleoecology.
Описание: This book offers a readable and accessible account of the way in which the world's plant life partly controls its own environment. Starting from the broad patterns in vegetation which have classically been seen as a passive response to climate, the authors build up from the local scale - with microclimates produced by plants - to the regional and global scale. The influence of plants (both on land and in the ocean) in making clouds, haze and rain are considered, along with plant effects on the composition of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere. Broad global feedbacks that either stabilize or destabilize the earth's environment will be explored, in the context of environmental change in the recent geological past, and in the near future. Common contentions and misconceptions about the role of vegetation or forest removal in the spread of deserts will also be considered.
Описание: This book is about desertification. The author describes vegetation degradation as a part of the integral process of desert ecosystem degradation in Central Asia under the impact of human activities. A connection is made between political and social factors and degradation of desert environments in historical perspective. Fragile desert ecosystems suffer first of all from the loss of vegetation. Wildlife is reduced, productivity of desert rangelands fall and the people also suffer from a shortage of food. The after-effect of this process is catastrophic, not only for the desert itself but also for the people living in the desert. Several measures are also discussed in the book for conservation of desert vegetation and rehabilitation of desert lands.

Описание: This book presents the first detailed survey, in English, of the forest vegetation of northeast Asia, a vast, mainly boreal or cool-temperate region that includes the Russian Far East (easternmost Siberia, Kamchatka, Sakhalin and Kuril Islands), Manchuria (northeastern China and adjacent), and northern Korea and Japan. Vegetation descriptions were prepared by local and foreign vegetation scientists, partly from literature sources but also from local field experience, including the several Czech-Slovak botanical expeditions to North Korea during the 1990s. Regional integration is provided in chapters on physical conditions and biogeography, and in a chapter comparing vegetation syntaxa. Two methodologies are used: 1) Exploration and forest classification following the Sukachev school of forest types (Manchuria and Russian Far East); and 2) Forest classification by ZГјrich-Montpellier (Braun-Blanquet) methodology (Japan and North Korea). The book should be valuable to vegetation scientists, conservation biologists, and anyone interested in the regional vegetation and landscapes, including students.
Описание: Vegetation, soil and climate are the most important components of ecological systems. This long-awaited fourth edition of the well-established textbook by Heinrich Walter summarizes our knowledge of the earth's ecology and constitutes the basis for a deeper understanding of the larger interrelations on a global scale.While Walter's general concept remains unchanged, the individual chapters have been completely revised, enlarged and updated. The author's intimate knowledge of practically all classes of plants and climatic zones allows him to describe the various ecological systems in close detail.This richly illustrated textbook is a must for every student in the plant sciences.
Описание: "Plant Strategies, Vegetation Processes, and Ecosystem Properties, Second Edition", is a thoroughly updated and comprehensive new edition of the very
successful "Plant Strategies and Vegetative Processes", which controversially proposed the existence of widely-recurring plant functional types with predictable relationships to
vegetation structure and dynamics. This second edition uses evidence from many parts of the world to re-examine these concepts in the light of the enormous expansion in the literature.
Its features include: a new section covering all aspects of ecosystem properties; new chapters on: assembling of communities, rarification and extinction, and colonisation and invasion;
principles and methodologies of a range of international tests including case study examples; chapter summaries for a quick reference guide; and, index of species names.
Written in a very readable style, this book is an invaluable reference source for researchers in the areas of plant, animal, and community ecology, conservation and land management.
"Written by one of the foremost authorities in the field, summarising over 35 years of research. A book all plant ecologists will want to read."- Jonathan Silvertown, Department of
Biological Sciences, The Open University, UK.
"The coverage is outstanding and comprehensive." - Simon A. Levin, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology,
Princeton University, USA.
