From Galileo's famous experiments in accelerated motion to Einstein's revolutionary theory of relativity, the experiments recorded here trace the evolution of modern physics from its beginnings to the mid-twentieth century. Brought together for the first time in one volume are important source readings on 25 epochal discoveries that changed man's understanding of the physical world. The accounts, written by the physicists who made them, include:
Isaac Newton: The Laws of Motion
Henry Cavendish: The Law of Gravitation
Augustin Fresnel: The Diffraction of Light
Hans Christian Oersted: Elecromagnetism
Heinrich Hertz: Electromagnetic
James Chadwick: The Neutron
Niels Bohr: The Hydrogen Atom,
and 17 more.
Morris H. Shamos, Professor Emeritus of Physics at New York University, has selected and edited the first published accounts of these important experiments and has also added numerous marginal notes that amplify and clarify the original documents. Moreover, the first 19 experiments can be readily re-created by students in a first-year physics course, making the book ideal for classroom and laboratory work as well as individual reference and study.
Finally, Dr. Shamos has provided revealing biographical sketches of the scientists and illuminating references to the political and cultural milieu in which the discoveries are made. The result is a superbly readable presentation accessible to lay readers of the crucial theoretical and empirical breakthroughs that altered the course of modern science."

"This book is Gamow at his best, which means the very best in science for the layman." -- Library Journal
Widely recognized as one of the 20th century's foremost physicists, George Gamow was also an unusually capable popularizer of science. His talents are vividly revealed in this exciting and penetrating explanation of how the central laws of physical science evolved -- from Pythagoras' discovery of frequency ratios in the 6th century B.C. to today's research on elementary particles.
Unlike many books on physics which focus entirely on fact and theory with little or no historic detail, the present work incorporates fascinating personal and biographical data about the great physicists of past and present. Thus Dr. Gamow discusses on an equal basis the trail of Galileo and the basic laws of mechanics which he discovered, or gives his personal recollections about Niels Bohr along with detailed discussion of Bohr's atomic model. You'll also find revealing glimpses of Newton, Huygens, Heisenberg, Pauli, Einstein, and many other immortals of science.
Each chapter is centered around a single great figure, or at most two, with other physicists of the era and their contributions forming a background. Major topics include the dawn of physics, the Dark Ages and the Renaissance, Newtonian physics, heat as energy, electricity, the relativistic revolution, quantum theory, and the atomic nucleus and elementary particles.
As Dr. Gamow points out in the Preface, the aim of this book is to give the reader the feeling of what physics is, and what kind of people physicists are. This delightfully informal approach, combined with the book's clear, easy-to-follow explanations, will especially appeal to young readers but will stimulate and entertain science enthusiasts of all ages. 1961 edition.
"The whole thing is a tour de force covering all the important landmarks." -- Guardian

Описание: This is the standard translation of one of the greatest single works by one of Western sciences' greatest single men, the Renaissance physicist Galileo Galilei. Written near the end of his life, the book had to be published abroad and led to Galileo's condemnation. But he nevertheless considered it to be "superior to everything else of mine published."Despite the fact that the book encompasses thirty years of highly original experimentation and theorizing on the part of this singular man, it is eminently readable. Written as a discussion between a master and two students, it sets forth its hundreds of experiments and summarizes the conclusions Galileo drew from those experiments in a brisk, direct style. Using helpful geometric demonstrations, Galileo discusses aspects of fracture of solid bodies, cohesion, leverage, the speed of light, sound, pendulums, falling bodies, projectiles, uniform motion, accelerated motion, and the strength of wires, rods, and beams under different loadings and placements.
Not only does the book display the genius of one of the makers of our civilization, but it also presents, for the historian of science, considerable information about Renaissance misapprehensions that Galileo refuted. "The publishers are to be congratulated for making this celebrated book once more readily available." -- Quarterly of Applied Physics.

Описание: While scientific inquiry has its roots in both Far Eastern and Indo-European cultures, the revolutionary ideas that made modern scientific achievements possible occurred initially in Europe. This stimulating, illuminating, and thoughtfully presented work explores the early stages of this scientific revolution, beginning with the rediscovery of Greek ideas in the mid-15th century and culminating with Galileo's brilliant Dialogue on the Two Chief Systems of the World in 1630.
Noted historian of science Marie Boas Hall first gives a general account of scientific thought in the mid-1400s, then examines the Copernican revolution and the anatomical work of Vesalius and his contemporaries, the impact of chemical medicine and the efforts of the Swiss physician and alchemist Paracelsus. Also here are insightful discussions of Harvey's discovery of the circulatory system, the work of Kepler, the effects of Galileo's telescopic discoveries, and other topics. A series of accompanying illustrations -- among them a Ptolemaic map, examples of Renaissance engineering, and portraits of Francis Bacon, Tycho Brahe, Vesalius, Kepler, and Galileo -- enhance this scholarly and informative work.
A valuable reference book for students of the history of science, The Scientific Renaissance 1450-1630 is "good, sound, academic stuff . . . interesting even to those for whom it is not required reading." -- New Statesman.

Caruso`s Method of Voice Production: The Scientific Culture of the Voice

He was the greatest tenor of his day and probably of all time. Trained naturally in singing Neapolitan ballads, Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) achieved a vocal quality often described as "celestial" or "golden." His breath control was such that he could deliver the longest phrase without any suggestion of difficulty, while his superb enunciation and an intense quality of pathos in his voice enabled him to reach and affect audiences on the deepest level.
This historic volume, dedicated to the great tenor and published shortly after his death, explains clearly and scientifically how Caruso achieved his phenomenal voice production. Written by a noted laryngologist and student of voice who devoted much of his career to working with Caruso and other singers, the book proposes a method of voice culture based on well-defined physiological laws. According to Dr. Marafioti, these is only one right way to sing -- a method based on the scientific principles of voice culture. Although Caruso instinctively sang that way, the methods can be learned by any singer.
Since singing, in essence, is merely speaking in musical rhythm, the first requirements for correct singing is a correctly produced speaking voice. This involves using the minimum tension of breath and vocal cords required for each tone; insuring that laryngeal sounds are transmitted to the mouth free of any interference; developing the quality of resonance, and so on. To help singers achieve these goals, the author prescribes exercises for correct voice production, vocal exercises to insure correct enunciation, methods to avoid (taking a breath before starting, singing double vowels, accentuating top tunes, etc.), and more.
Replete with practical instructions and advice for aspiring singers, this book is also a fascinating document of musical history -- an intimate revelation of the natural gifts that underlay Caruso's artistry, his passionate dedication to his art, and the immortal legacy of song he left behind.

"For high school seniors or college freshmen with a background in algebra and trigonometry, the book should provide a good introduction to matrices, vector algebra, analytical geometry, and calculus. The work's solid modern mathematical content and its personality recommend consideration as a text or as stimulating supplementary reading." "American Scientist
""The book is well written and the presentation throughout achieves clarity of thought with a minimum of computational effort." "Physics Today
"This rewarding text, beautifully illustrated by the author and written with superb clarity, offers undergraduate students a solid mathematical background and functions equally well for independent study.
The five-part treatment begins with geometry, defining three-dimensional Euclidean space and its axioms, the coordinate system and coordinate transformation, and matrices. A review of vector algebra covers vector properties, multiplication, the resolution of a vector along a complete set of base vectors, and vector transformations. Topics in analytic geometry introduce loci, straight lines, the plane, two-dimensional curves, and the quadratic form. Functions are defined, as are intervals, along with multiplicity, the slope at a point, continuity, and areas. The concluding chapter, on differential and integral calculus, explains the concept of a limit, the derivative, the integral, differential equations, and applications of the calculus to kinematics."
