The music historian Sir John Hawkings recorded that his friend Handel's keyboard improvisations "stole on the ear in a slow and solemn progression; the harmony close wrought, and as full as could be possibly be expressed; the passage concatenated with stupendous art, the whole at the same time being perfectly intelligible, and carrying the appearance of great simplicity." The dramatic overture had its beginnings in Renaissance court entertainments, which often began with a flourish of trumpets. It reached a high point of inspiration in the overtures that George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) composed for his operas and oratorios. This volume presents 60 Handel overtures and sinfonias, originally scored for orchestra, superbly arranged for solo keyboard.
