Описание: This book features most of the important theorems and algorithms related to planar graphs. Eminently suitable as a text, it also is useful for researchers and includes an extensive reference section.
The authors, who have researched planar graphs for many years, have structured the topics in a manner relevant to graph theorists and computer scientists. The first two chapters are introductory and provide the foundations of the graph theoretic notions and algorithmic techniques used throughout the text. Succeeding chapters discuss planarity testing and embedding, drawing planar graphs, vertex- and edge-coloring, independent vertex sets, and subgraph listing. The text concludes with explorations of planar separator theorem, Hamiltonian cycles, and single-commodity or multi-commodity flows.

Описание: The observation and analysis of particle and wave scattering plays a crucial role in physics; numerous important discoveries, including nuclear fission, are the direct result of collision experiments. This concise volume crosses the boundaries of physics' traditional subdivisions to treat scattering theory within the context of classical electromagnetic radiation, classical particle mechanics, and quantum mechanics.
An enlarged and improved edition of Roger G. Newton's text on the theory of scattering electromagnetic waves, this text explores classical particles and quantum-mechanic particles, including multiparticle collisions. This edition's updates include coverage of developments in three-particle collisions, scattering by noncentral potentials, and inverse scattering problems. Numerous problems, examples, notes, and references augment the text.

Despite the increasing use of computers, the basic need for mathematical tables continues. Tables serve a vital role in preliminary surveys of problems before programming for machine operation, and they are indispensable to thousands of engineers and scientists without access to machines. Because of automatic computers, however, and because of recent scientific advances, a greater variety of functions and a higher accuracy of tabulation than have been available until now are required.
In 1954, a conference on mathematical tables, sponsored by M.I.T. and the National Science Foundation, met to discuss a modernization and extension of Jahnke and Emde's classical tables of functions. This volume, published 10 years later by the U.S. Department of Commerce, is the result. Designed to include a maximum of information and to meet the needs of scientists in all fields, it is a monumental piece of work, a comprehensive and self-contained summary of the mathematical functions that arise in physical and engineering problems.
The book contains 29 sets of tables, some to as high as 20 places: mathematical constants; physical constants and conversion factors (6 tables); exponential integral and related functions (7); error function and Fresnel integrals (12); Bessel functions of integer (12) and fractional (13) order; integrals of Bessel functions (2); Struve and related functions (2); confluent hypergeometric functions (2); Coulomb wave functions (2); hypergeometric functions; Jacobian elliptic and theta functions (2); elliptic integrals {9); Weierstrass elliptic and related functions; parabolic cylinder functions {3); Mathieu functions (2); spheroidal wave functions (5); orthogonal polynomials (13); combinatorial analysis (9); numerical interpolation, differentiation and integration (11); probability functions (ll); scales of notation (6); miscellaneous functions (9); Laplace transforms (2); and others.
Each of these sections is prefaced by a list of related formulas and graphs: differential equations, series expansions, special functions, and other basic relations. These constitute an unusually valuable reference work in themselves. The prefatory material also includes an explanation "of "the numerical methods involved in using the tables that follow and a bibliography. Numerical examples illustrate the use of each table and explain the computation of function values which lie outside its range, while the editors' introduction describes higher-order interpolation procedures. Well over""100 figures illustrate the text.
In all, this is one of the most ambitious and useful books of its type ever published, an essential aid in all scientific and engineering research, problem solving, experimentation and field work. This low-cost edition contains every page of the original government publication.

Описание: A unified treatment of the most important results in the study of fractional graph concepts, this volume explores the various ways in which integer-valued concepts can be modified to derive nonintegral values. It begins with the general fractional theory of hypergraphs and presents in-depth coverage of fundamental and advanced topics. Subjects include fractional matching, fractional coloring, fractional edge coloring, fractional arboricity via matroid methods, and fractional isomorphism. The final chapter examines additional topics such as fractional domination, fractional intersection numbers, and fractional aspects of partially ordered sets.
Challenging exercises reinforce the contents of each chapter, and the authors provide substantial references and bibliographic materials. A comprehensive reference for researchers, this volume also constitutes an excellent graduate-level text for students of graph theory and linear programming.

From the circuit diagrams of physics and electronics to psychology's sociograms and the communications networks employed by operational research, an extraordinary variety of disciplines rely on graphs to convey fundamentals as well as finer points. With this concise and well-written text, any reader possessing a firm grasp of general mathematics can follow the development of graph theory and learn to apply its principles in methods both formal and abstract.
The first full-length book in English on graph theory, this volume is the work of a distinguished mathematician who has made significant original contributions to the subject. His frequent use of practical examples illustrates the theory's broad range of applications, providing a versatile mathematical technique appropriate to the behavioral sciences, information theory, cybernetics, and other areas, in addition to mathematical disciplines such as set and matrix theory.
The author begins with the simplest theorems, stated in the most general terms possible for economy of thought and exposition. He gradually builds to more complex theorems, expressed in more exacting proofs and reflecting the results of extensive studies. Definitions from algebra and the theory of sets appear at the start and are supplemented as needed.
Students, teachers, and anyone interested in effective communication of research results will find this text a valuable source of instruction.

Описание: This graduate-level text is intended for any student of physics who requires a thorough grounding in the quantum theory of nonrelativistic scattering. It is designed for readers who are already familiar with the general principles of quantum mechanics and who have some small acquaintance with scattering theory. Study of this text will allow students of atomic or nuclear physics to begin reading the literature and tackling real problems, with a complete grasp of the underlying principles. For students of high-energy physics, it provides the necessary background for later study of relativistic problems.
Topics are presented in terms of the simplest relevant example, so that scattering theory can be learned by becoming familiar with all of the basic concepts the "S" operator, cross sections, the "T" matrix, and so forth in their simplest context. The time-dependent approach to the subject is emphasized, starting with the use of time-dependent formalism to define all of the basic concepts and the subsequent introduction of the time-independent theory as a tool for computation and for establishing certain general properties. Problems at the end of each chapter improve and supplement readers' grasp of the material."

Number theory, the Queen of Mathematics, is an almost purely theoretical science. Yet it can be the source of endlessly intriguing puzzle problems, as this remarkable book demonstrates. This is the first book to deal exclusively with the recreational aspects of the subject and it is certain to be a delightful surprise to all devotees of the mathematical puzzle, from the rawest beginner to the most practiced expert. Almost every aspect of the theory of numbers that could conceivably be of interest to the layman is dealt with, all from the recreational point of view. Readers will become acquainted with divisors, perfect numbers, the ingenious invention of congruences by Gauss, scales of notation, endless decimals, Pythagorean triangles (there is a list of the first 100 with consecutive legs; the 100th has a leg of 77 digits), oddities about squares, methods of factoring, mysteries of prime numbers, Gauss's Golden Theorem, polygonal and pyramidal numbers, the Pell Equation, the unsolved Last Theorem of Fermat, and many other aspects of number theory, simply by learning how to work with them in solving hundreds of mathematical puzzle problems. The text is extremely clear and easy to follow, and it bears convincing evidence of the author's deep sense of humor and his outstanding ability to lure the reader through even the most difficult trails by skillfully revealing their fascination. The problems distributed throughout the book are explained in the final chapter and there is also a supplementary chapter containing 100 problems and their solutions, many original. There are over 100 tables.
The appeal of these stimulating puzzles lies in their ready comprehensibility and the fact that only high school math is needed to master the fundamental theory presented by the author. This theory is itself interesting and of use to the more serious math student, but it may be omitted by lay readers without diminishing the book's challenge or detracting from the pleasure-giving nuggets it contains.
