Описание: This study was carried out in the semi-arid mid-Zambezi valley, northern Zimbabwe to explore how biodiversity respond to loss of primary habitats. The study investigated the impact of woodland conversion for cultivation purposes on woody species, arthropods and vegetation recovery. Cultivation is resulting in rapid decrease in tree diversity at farm level, while at landscape level agricultural activities do not have any effect woody species diversity however, there are negative effects on tree physiognomy and dominance. Arthropod indicator groups, Charaxes butterflies and Cetoniinae beetles, showed a decrease in abundance and loss of diversity due to agriculture with more loss recorded in homogeneous intensively cultivated areas. Recovering fallow vegetation was characterised by dominance of invasive species such as Acacia tortilis subsp spirocarpa. To conserve biodiversity within agricultural landscapes in this area effort may have to focus on implementing an agricultural paradigm that maintains a mosaic of different land-use units, each in a different phase of clearance-cultivation-abandonment-recovery-clearance cycle.

Описание: The Zambezi Teak forests of western Zambia have been exploited for their timber for over 80 years. The record of this exploitation and the subsequent collapse of the timber industry provide a unique insight into problems around land use change, governance and the interaction between ecology, society and forest management in south-central Africa. A wide-ranging study, this book is as much an examination of methodology for sustainability research as it is a review of land use change, forest management and rural livelihoods. It explores the problem of scale and how using explicit considerations of scale may contribute to an integration between the life sciences and the social sciences that a holistic assessment of sustainable development problems demands. Specific details of land use change in the region are examined over a 30 year period, including the first detailed mapping of changes to the Zambezi Teak forests since logging ceased in the early 1970s. Forest management practices and fire emerge as important drivers of land use change, and the book provides examples of how forest management and governance are important to sustainable development in this sparsely populated and inaccessible region. For readers interested a detailed understanding of the problems of deforestation, land use change and governance in the dry forests of Africa, this book is essential reading. It also provides insights into wider questions of how multidisciplinary studies may be integrated in a holistic synthesis.African dry forests have been widely studied, but few publications examine the problems of land use change and deforestation in this level of detail. The author draws on 20 years of experience in south-central Africa to combine historical records with research on current political, social and governance issues. The result is a landmark publication which covers a depth and breadth that is seldom achieved in studies of African sustainable development.

Описание: An epidemiological investigation on the fish disease Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) was conducted from January to December 2011 in the Zambezi River System (ZRS) of Sesheke District in the Western Province of Zambia. The study aimed at determining factors associated with outbreaks of EUS,infection rate and distribution of the disease.Active surveillance was conducted where a total of 4,800 fish were inspected in February, June and October for gross EUS-like lesions and disease confirmed using histopathology. Results of the study implicate several predisposing environmental factors;heavy rains preceded outbreaks resulting in excess flooding which caused water levels to rise 2m higher than normal; predominantly gleysol and arenosol soils of the ZRS resulted in low water pH(4.53-6.5)Other factors significantly(p<0.05) associated with EUS outbreaks were:low total alkalinity (45.13±SE 0.0418),water temperature (20.94±SE 0.2173),ambient temperature(25.85±SE 0.3058),month (June)and site(lagoons)of sampling.Infection rate was 3% (144) of the 4,800 fishes sampled. There is indication that EUS has affected fish in ZRS from Kazungula to Chavuma Districts of Zambia.
