Описание: This book is the first full-length study of Byron’s influence on Victorian writers, concentrating on Carlyle, Emily Bronte, Tennyson, Bulwer Lytton, Disraeli, and Wilde. It has two emphases, theoretical and literary-historical. Its theoretical project is to revise earlier understanding of literary influence through a demonstration of the ways that institutions of cultural production mediate the access that later writers have to earlier ones. Its literary-historical project is to suggest the many different responses that Victorian writers had to Byron and to his celebrity in British culture. It argues that defining oneself against Byron became a ritual of the Victorian authorial career. Victorian writers did not reject Byron outright: instead, they defined themselves through fictions of personal development away from values associated with Byron towards those associated with themselves as mature Victorian writers.

Описание: Criticism of Woolf is often polarised into viewing her work as either fundamentally progressive or reactionary. In Virginia Woolf and the Victorians, Steve Ellis argues that her commitment to yet anxiety about modernity coexists with a nostalgia and respect for aspects of Victorian culture threatened by radical social change. Ellis tracks Woolf’s response to the Victorian era through her fiction and other writings, arguing that Woolf can be seen as more ‘Post-Victorian’ than ‘modernist’. He explains how Woolf’s emphasis on continuity and reconciliation related to twentieth-century debates about Victorian values, and he analyses her response to the First World War as the major threat to that continuity. This detailed and original investigation of the range of Woolf’s writing attends to questions of cultural and political history and fictional structure, imagery and diction. It proposes a new reading of Woolf’s thinking about the relationships between the past, present and future.

Описание: The 19th century has become especially relevant for the present--from large-scale adaptations of written works through commodities to interactive theme parks. This book is an introduction to the novelistic refashionings of the Victorian age with a special focus on revisions of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Charles Dickens's Great Expectations. Post-Victorian research is still in the making and the first segment of the book is devoted to clarifying definitions, terminology, interpretive contexts and discourses. Two major frameworks for reading post-Victorian fiction are developed in the rest of the book: the literary scene and political and social aspects of analysis. These frameworks are introduced in more detail in two chapters on authors, readers, criticism and the market, and on narratives of national, cultural and self identities. These perspectives are combined in the last two sections. Among the works examined are Caryl Phillips's Cambridge, Matthew Kneale's English Passengers, Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda and Jack Maggs, Lloyd Jones's Mister Pip, Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, D.M. Thomas's Charlotte, and Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair.
