Описание: Learn to catch a phish without becoming live bait. Phishing e–mails create daily havoc for both individuals and organizations. A social engineering technique that preys on our human nature, phishing remains remarkably successful for scammers and malicious social engineers despite increasingly sophisticated security programs and awareness campaigns. Christopher Hadnagy and Michele Fincher, practitioners and consultants in human–based security, have spent years working to understand how and why phishing works. In this book, they dissect what a phish is, why it succeeds, and the principles behind it, fully exposing all of its flaws and detailing innovative ways to defend against it. Focusing on the basics of the phish, the underlying psychology, the skillful use of influence, and a creative program to use the phisher?s weapons against him, this highly readable guide provides tools for both individuals and corporations. Hadnagy and Fincher examine some of the most current and effective phish, show you how to spot a spoofed e–mail or cloned website, explore phishing education platforms that work, and demonstrate how to create your own phish to use in your security awareness program. Despite legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security, phishing persists because it exploits our natural responses to e–mail requests. Phishing Dark Waters, The Offensive and Defensive Sides of Malicious E–mails arms you with a greater understanding of: The psychological principles that make phishing effective High–profile breaches, including Target, RSA, and Coca–Cola, that began with a phish Common scams, including those following natural disasters and other highly publicized events Different goals of attackers: financial, corporate espionage, national security, and identity theft threats How to protect your enterprise with a corporate phishing program and integrate it into company policies Ways to catch a phish Why most security awareness programs don?t work urface adsorption, electron transfer via cathodic and anodic processes, dissolution of metals and dealloying, the formation of pre–passive oxide films, localized corrosion and passivity breakdown, the adsorption of inhibitors, and hydrogen embrittlement. This book therefore explains via molecular modeling how these pathways can be individually assessed and compared to one another. The book describes both the strengths and limitations of the current molecular and atomistic modelling toolkit so that the professional interested in using these techniques can determine whether or not a given tool is appropriate for simulating the corrosion phenomenon at hand. The book also can serve as a reference for researchers seeking to build new research programs that will extend the current molecular modelling toolkit into exciting new directions. Molecular Modeling of Corrosion Processes features: Recent examples of applications of molecular modeling to corrosion phenomena throughout the text An introduction to mechanisms and models in corrosion science and engineering Methods such as kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, thermodynamic analysis, simulation of adsorption phenomena, statistical mechanics, and conventional transition state theory Presents current challenges and likely developments in this field for the future Various recent examples of applications of molecular modeling to corrosion phenomena are provided throughout the text. Some of these applications include the molecular dynamics of interfaces, dissolution mechanisms and dealloying, interrogating surface chemistry, properties of passive films, localized corrosion, the metal/metal oxide interface, hydrogen embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking, the modeling of corrosion inhibitors, and computational materials discovery. Описание: The fourth edition of this best-selling book has three new chapters on important topics related to missile guidance. The first new chapter shows how the guidance problem can be reformulated so that a new guidance law can be derived which both hits the target using minimum energy and, in addition, travels on a desired trajectory. This type of guidance is important in applications in which the trajectory must be shaped for either sensor or lethality considerations. Intentional or unintentional spiraling maneuvers on the part of a tactical ballistic missile can also make it particularly difficult for a pursuing missile to hit. The third edition already discussed ways in which performance against weaving or spiraling targets could be improved from a guidance point of view. In this edition, the second new chapter explores the various filtering options that can be used to estimate the necessary states for using advanced guidance techniques. As with other material in the text, this chapter uses a step-by-step approach in explaining and deriving the various filtering options. The third new chapter approaches the guidance problem from a totally different perspective that is often used by th

"Strategy in the Missile Age" first reviews the development of modern military strategy to World War II, giving the reader a reference point for the radical rethinking that follows, as Dr. Brodie considers the problems of the Strategic Air Command, of civil defense, of limited war, of counterforce or pre-emptive strategies, of city-busting, of missile bases in Europe, and so on. The book, unlike so many on modern military affairs, does not present a program or defend a policy, nor is it a brief for any one of the armed services. It is a balanced analysis of the requirements of strength for the 1960 s, including especially the military posture necessary to prevent war. A unique feature is the discussion of the problem of the cost of preparedness in relation to the requirements of the national economy, so often neglected by other military thinkers.

How differing assessments of risk by physicists and computer scientists have influenced public debate over nuclear defense.
In a rapidly changing world, we rely upon experts to assess the promise and risks of new technology. But how do these experts make sense of a highly uncertain future? In Arguments that Count, Rebecca Slayton offers an important new perspective. Drawing on new historical documents and interviews as well as perspectives in science and technology studies, she provides an original account of how scientists came to terms with the unprecedented threat of nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). She compares how two different professional communities -- physicists and computer scientists -- constructed arguments about the risks of missile defense, and how these arguments changed over time. Slayton shows that our understanding of technological risks is shaped by disciplinary repertoires -- the codified knowledge and mathematical rules that experts use to frame new challenges. And, significantly, a new repertoire can bring long-neglected risks into clear view.
In the 1950s, scientists recognized that high-speed computers would be needed to cope with the unprecedented speed of ICBMs. But the nation's elite science advisors had no way to analyze the risks of computers so used physics to assess what they could: radar and missile performance. Only decades later, after establishing computing as a science, were advisors able to analyze authoritatively the risks associated with complex software -- most notably, the risk of a catastrophic failure. As we continue to confront new threats, including that of cyber attack, Slayton offers valuable insight into how different kinds of expertise can limit or expand our capacity to address novel technological risks.

Описание: Vitaly Leonidovich Katayev was an eyewitness to history as he saw the arms race accelerating at an absurd and inexplicable pace, and he understood why. His perspective was from inside the Soviet system, in an office that was devoted to analysis of arms control and defence matters in the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party and later in an interdepartmental working group. Vitaly Katayev was a skilled designer and an acute observer. His recollections in this book, along with documents he deposited at the Hoover Institution Library and Archives, offer an extraordinary window into Soviet decisions and calculations. This monograph shows how Soviet leaders were often hobbled by a poor understanding of what was happening in the United States, but it also demonstrates that Americans, too, had a weak grasp of what was happening in Moscow, before and after Mikhail Gorbachev came to power. The misunderstandings on both sides were a symptom of the deepest chasm of the Cold War and A Memoir of the Missile Age provides a valuable key with which to open the Soviet black box.

Описание: Most of us take it for granted that wars in defence of one's political community are the quintessential just wars. Indeed, while in recent years philosophers have subjected all of our other assumptions about just war theory to radical revision, this principle has emerged largely unscathed. But what underpins the morality of defensive war? In this book, leading moral and political philosophers both show the profoundly challenging nature of that question, and advance novel answers to it. The first part exposes the deep tension between the individualist foundations of much contemporary philosophy and plausible conclusions about the morality of defensive war. The second part offers an individualist attempt to resolve that tension, while the third seeks to justify defensive war by appeal to more collectivist values.

Описание: Helen Frowe offers a new account of when and why it is morally permissible for a person to use force to defend herself or others against harm. She explores the use of force between individuals before extending the enquiry to war, to argue that we should judge the ethics of killing in war by the moral rules that govern killing between individuals.
Описание: As global environmental changes become increasingly evident and efforts to respond to these changes fall short of expectations, questions about the circumstances that generate environmental reforms become more pressing. Defensive Environmentalists and the Dynamics of Global Reform answers these questions through a historical analysis of two processes that have contributed to environmental reforms, one in which people become defensive environmentalists concerned about environmental problems close to home and another in which people become altruistic environmentalists intent on alleviating global problems after experiencing catastrophic events such as hurricanes, droughts and fires. These focusing events make reform more urgent and convince people to become altruistic environmentalists. Bolstered by defensive environmentalists, the altruists gain strength in environmental politics and reforms occur.
