Описание: Gives an overview of various classes of infinite-dimensional Lie groups and their applications in Hamiltonian mechanics, fluid dynamics, integrable systems, gauge theory, and complex geometry. This book is suitable for both students and researchers in Lie theory, geometry, and Hamiltonian systems.
Описание: This book explores the foundations of hamiltonian dynamical systems and statistical mechanics, in particular phase transitionsc, from the point of view of geometry and topology. A broad participation of topology in these fields has been lacking and this book will provide a welcome overview of the current research in the area, in which the author himself is a pioneer. Using geometrical thinking to solve fundamental problems in these areas, compared to the purely analytical methods usually used in physics could be highly productive. The author skillfully guides the reader, whether mathematician or physicists through the background needed to understand and use these techniques. From the foreword:"It is in particular the quality of mind of the author and his deep physical, as well as mathematical insights, which make this book so special and inspiring. It is a "must" for those who want to venture into a new approach to old problems oe want to use new tools for new problems." -- Professor E. G. D. Cohen, Rockefeller University, New York. s
Описание: Singularity theory appears in numerous branches of mathematics, as well as in many emerging areas such as robotics, control theory, imaging, and various
evolving areas in physics. The purpose of this proceedings volume is to cover recent developments in singularity theory and to introduce young researchers from developing countries to
singularities in geometry and topology. The contributions discuss singularities in both complex and real geometry.
As such, they provide a natural continuation of the previous
school on singularities held at ICTP (1991), which is recognized as having had a major influence in the field.

Описание: Covers topology and geometry beginning with an accessible account of the extraordinary and rather mysterious impact of mathematical physics, especially gauge theory, on the study of the geometry and topology of manifolds. This work brings the reader up to the level needed to conclude with a brief discussion of the Seiberg-Witten invariants.

Описание: This is a book on topology and geometry and, like any books on subjects as vast as these, it has a point-of-view that guided the selection of topics. Naber takes the view that the rekindled interest that mathematics and physics have shown in each other of late should be fostered and that this is best accomplished by allowing them to cohabit. The book weaves together rudimentary notions from the classical gauge theory of physics with the topological and geometrical concepts that became the mathematical models of these notions. We ask the reader to come to us with some vague notion of what an electromagnetic field might be, a willingness to accept a few of the more elementary pronouncements of quantum mechanics, a solid background in real analysis and linear algebra and some of the vocabulary of modern algebra. To such a reader we offer an excursion that begins with the definition of a topological space and finds its way eventually to the moduli space of anti-self-dual SU(2) connections on S4 with instanton number -1. Iwould go over both volumes thoroughly and make some minor changes in terminology and notation and correct any errors I find. In this new edition, a chapter on Singular Homology will be added as well as minor changes in notation and terminology throughout and some sections have been rewritten or omitted. Reviews of First Edition: “It is unusual to find a book so carefully tailored to the needs of this interdisciplinary area of mathematical physics...Naber combines a knowledge of his subject with an excellent informal writing style. (NZMS Newletter) ...this book should be very interesting for mathematicians and physicists (as well as other scientists) who are concerned with gauge theories. (Zentralblatt Fuer Mathematik)
Описание: In this book we study function spaces of low Borel complexity. Techniques from general topology, infinite-dimensional topology, functional analysis and
descriptive set theory are primarily used for the study of these spaces. The mix of methods from several disciplines makes the subject particularly interesting.
things, a complete and self-contained proof of the Dobrowolski-Marciszewski-Mogilski Theorem that all function spaces of low Borel complexity are topologically homeomorphic, is
presented. In order to understand what is going on, a solid background in infinite-dimensional topology is needed. And for that a fair amount of knowledge of dimension theory as well as
ANR theory is needed.
The necessary material was partially covered in our previous book "Infinite-dimensional topology, prerequisites and introduction". A selection of what
was done there can be found here as well, but completely revised and at many places expanded with recent results. A 'scenic' route has been chosen towards the
Dobrowolski-Marciszewski-Mogilski Theorem, linking the results needed for its proof to interesting recent research developments in dimension theory and infinite-dimensional
The first five chapters of this book are intended as a text for graduate courses in topology. For a course in dimension theory, Chapters 2 and 3 and part of Chapter 1
should be covered. For a course in infinite-dimensional topology, Chapters 1, 4 and 5.
In Chapter 6, which deals with function spaces, recent research results are discussed. It
be used for a graduate course in topology but its flavor is more that of a research monograph than of a textbook; it is therefore more suitable as a text for a research seminar. The book
consequently has the character of both textbook and a research monograph.
In Chapters 1 through 5, unless stated otherwise, all spaces under discussion are separable and
metrizable. In Chapter 6 results for more general classes of spaces are presented. In Appendix A for easy reference and some basic facts that are important in the book have been
The book is not intended as a basis for a course in topology; its purpose is to collect knowledge about general topology. The exercises in the book serve three
purposes: to test the reader's understanding of the material; to supply proofs of statements that are used in the text, but are not proven there; and, to provide additional information not
covered by the text. Solutions to selected exercises have been included in Appendix B.
These exercises are important or difficult.

Описание: Higher-dimensional algebraic geometry studies the classification theory of algebraic varieties. This very active area of research is still developing, but an amazing quantity of knowledge has accumulated over the past twenty years. The authorВїs goal is to provide an easily accessible introduction to the subject. The book covers preparatory and standard definitions and results, moves on to discuss various aspects of the geometry of smooth projective varieties with many rational curves, and finishes in taking the first steps towards MoriВїs minimal model program of classification of algebraic varieties by proving the cone and contraction theorems. The book is well organized and the author has kept the number of concepts that are used but not proved to a minimum to provide a mostly self-contained introduction to graduate students and researchers.
Описание: This work covers topics such as manifolds with positive scalar curvature, pseudo-isotopy spectrum and controlled theory, and reduction of the Novikov and
Borel conjectures for aspherical complexes to aspherical manifolds.

Описание: This Book Consists Of A Selection Of Articles Devoted To New Ideas And Develpments In Low Dimensional Topology. Low Dimensions Refer To Dimensions Three And Four For The Topology Of Manifolds And Their Submanifolds. Thus We Have Papers Related To Both Manifolds And To Knotted Submanifolds Of Dimension One In Three (Classical Knot Theory) And Two In Four (Surfaces In Four Dimensional Spaces). Some Of The Work Involves Virtual Knot Theory Where The Knots Are Abstractions Of Classical Knots But Can Be Represented By Knots Embedded In Surfaces. This Leads Both To New Interactions With Classical Topology And To New Interactions With Essential Combinatorics.

Описание: The configuration space of a manifold provides the appropriate setting for problems not only in topology but also in other areas such as nonlinear analysis and algebra. With applications in mind, the aim of this monograph is to provide a coherent and thorough treatment of the configuration spaces of Euclidean spaces and spheres which makes the subject accessible to researchers and graduate students with a minimal background in classical homotopy theory and algebraic topology. The treatment regards the homotopy relations of Yang-Baxter type as being fundamental. It also includes a novel and geometric presentation of the classical pure braid group; the cellular structure of these configuration spaces which leads to a cellular model for the associated based and free loop spaces; the homology and cohomology of based and free loop spaces; and an illustration of how to apply the latter to the study of Hamiltonian systems of k-body type.
