Описание: Sustainability levels in the Niger Delta Region by two prolific writers represent the first ever concrete attempt to address this very important but long neglected problem. Despite enormous contribution to national development, the level of sustainability in the Niger Delta Region remains a pressing concern to many people. Writing as seasoned environmental experts and academia, the authors’ main thesis is that the developments in the region since the pre independence era are clear departures from sustainable norms. The level, trend and dimensions of sustainability in the region have not been empirically diagnosed to warrant any policy direction. In essence, this book explores the interface between environmental, economic, social and institutional subsystems of sustainability in the region using empirical evidences. The book provides a scientific analysis of the trend and dimensions of sustainability in the region from 1958 to 2010 and projections to 2020. Factors which influence the trends and dimensions of sustainability in the region are examined while policy imperatives identified.
Описание: This Monograph on “Management of Nigeria’s Niger Delta Crisis in the Context of John Rawls’ Treatise on Justice” is a novel way of understanding and managing the ethnic minority conflict that has for over four decades strained the relationships between the trio; the Niger Delta peoples, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the Multinational Oil Companies in the country. It presents a consistent account of the relationship between these conflicting parties before and after Nigeria’s independence in 1960. The text identifies ‘injustice’ as a common denominator to the different trends of conflicts in the region and locates the context of the Niger Delta Crisis in two epochal events of 1914. It discusses various efforts directed at resolving the crisis. The text argues that where there is no justice, there can never be peace. Thus, as a text on Conflict Management and Peace Philosophy, the monograph offers us the opportunity of understanding the requirements of the principles of Justice as fairness in the management of minority conflicts the world over.

Описание: Oil and its related crises in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria simmered for a while and gradually reached a crescendo. At the outset, it was thought that the Niger Delta crises were limited to the core states of the region. Yet, the problem has today become perhaps the political albatross of the country.Much has been said and written about the NDRN as well as the impact of oil on the region. But of course the foundation of all these is the crisis of oil control, injustice and regional conspiracy against the NDR, which is home to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry –the base of Nigeria’s economy. Crude oil reserves in the region are estimated at about 35 billion barrels and Nigeria depends almost entirely on oil revenue. In spite of this enormous resources and revenues that accrue from oil, the region has been neglected by successive governments. The establishment of interventionist agencies, particularly the MNDA to address development in the region is a major response to the Willinks Report. In this text, the authors explore the dynamics leading to the emergence of these agencies as well as showcase the politics behind their failures, and make strong recommendations going forward.
Описание: This work sets out to examine the relationship between the Nigerian Capital Market and economic development of Nigeria from 1987 to 2006. Thus, the performance of the Nigerian Capital Market indicators as they affect the GDP growth rate and human development index in Nigeria was examined. Multiple linear regression model was adopted as the method of analysis. The evaluation technique includes t-statistics, R squared, adjusted R squared, Durbin Watson test, standard error test and the f-statistics. The specific findings of this study show that there is no significant relationship between the capital market indicators and economic development in Nigeria during the period 1987 to 2006. There is a positive but insignificant relationship among the Nigerian Stock Exchange market capitalization, turnover ratio and economic development, while the relationship between the Nigerian Stock Exchange number of listed securities and economic development is negative and insignificant. Therefore, the Nigerian capital Market has fallen short of expectation vis-?-vis its role in fostering investment for economic growth and development.
Описание: Ethnic and religious clashes have continued in Africa's most densely populated nation. Nigeria is a nation of vast human and natural resource potential that has experienced extreme strife during forty years of transition from colonial rule to democratic governance. The central research questions are: How has the historical development of Nigeria's Army effected the development of the nation-state? And how has political engagement changed the army? The first step examined the ethnic, religious factors and the history of military coups d' tat. The second step examined the effect of military governance on education, the economy, and foreign policy. The final step determined the future path of Nigeria and its Army after the birth of Nigeria's third republic. The conclusion recommended an increase in military-to-military contact with Nigeria to increase professionalism and respect for the subordination of the military to civilian authority, along with increased diplomatic efforts to help Nigerians heal the wounds of internal discord that have created the belief that military governance is the answer.

Wide research is going on ecofriendly synthesis and antimicrobial mechanisms of the Agnps. In this book the possible mechanisms for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles by the microbes and the mechanistic modes of antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles were discussed and the research work involved in the synthesis of Agnps using fungi Aspergillus niger was included. Finally the book ends by giving information on biological synthesis of silver nanoparticles and the various methods involved in characterization of nanoparticles and their antimicrobial efficacy against pathogenic bacteria, fungi and virus that causes diseases in plants and human beings.
Описание: River basin has always been a center for attraction in geopolitics. On a geopolitical space river seems to be one of the important feature which characterizes the relations among surrounding states. In the form of boundary or in terms of water resource utility, rivers always play a central thematic role in geopolitical relationship of nation-states. The location and the path of movement of river demarcate the levels of importance in shaping the geopolitical structure of nations. If the flow of river is restricted within the boundary of state its importance would be regional, or national, but location of river near the international boundary or river itself demarcate as a boundary then its importance increased as international. This work aims to investigate the geopolitical issues related to River Basin of Africa in general and Niger River Basin in particular. The sources of disputes in Niger River basin also vary from ecology, economics, and political psychology; finance sharing, resource utility, cultural anthropology and geopolitics.clashes of interest are inevitable in the region where newly independent countries are struggling with acute socio-economic and political problems.
Описание: Aim of the diagnostic study was to gain insight in the development potential of livestock for the rice-based economy of Office du Niger (ON) in Mali. Via surveys, interviews and farmer group discussions, we studied the functioning of various farming systems and value chains. Findings show that in ON rice is the prime agricultural activity: though half of the farm households own cattle (for capital insurance and draught power), livestock management is troublesome due to a lack of grazing land and water points etc. Rice production is lucrative, but half of the farmers do not have the land and/or capital to attain a good production and sell a profitable price. The ON supports rice farming via the provision of infrastructure and subsidies but the hierarchical structure and limited human resources hinder the timely availability and quality of these services. More affluent farmers do cope, but poorer farmers have problems to make ends meet. Diversification towards intensive livestock production seems a possible way out.
