Описание: In this study total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of Euphorbia helioscopia (EHL) and Grewia optiva (GOL) extracts was investigated. The antioxidant components were initially extracted in methanol and subjected to partitioning in solvents of different polarity. Antioxidant and radical scavenging activity of these extracts were investigated using antioxidant assays such as 2,2?-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulpohonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation scavenging, the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2?-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) scavenging, total phenolic content (TPC),total flavonoid content (TFC) and total antioxidant activity determination using ferric thiocyanate method, Superoxide anion radical scavenging activity and Metal Chelating activity. Using ABTS•+ decolorization assay and FRAP assay, Euphorbia helioscopia and Grewia optiva extracts showed a wide range of antioxidant activity.

Описание: The present investigations were intended to evaluate the antidiabetic potential of three members (Euphorbia prostrata, Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia helioscopia) of family Euphorbiaceae of Lahore region and antifungal potential of nine members of family Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbia prostrata, Euphorbia splendens, Euphorbia hirta, E. helioscopia, Ricinus communis, Jatropha integerrima, Putranjiva roxburghii Phyllanthus emblica and Croton tiglium). Antidiabetic investigations showed that the methanolic extract of E. prostrata and E. hirta showed excellent activity as compared to commercially available drug so in future they can be used for the treatment of diabetes while the third plant E.helioscopia enhanced the blood glucose level so it can be recommended to the patients of Hypoglycemia after frther toxicologically studies. Antifungal results showed that methanolic extracts of E.helioscopia (250 µg/ml) were very effective against Aspergilus niger while E. prostrata (250 µg/ml) showed maximum activity against Rhizopus oryza while Alternaria solani give exhibited no activity against any plant extract.

Renewable sources of energy obtained from biomass offer a great future of clean and green fuel. Plants as biofuel are very important and during last three decades authors have worked on various projects of Government of India on Bio-fuels. Hydrocarbons from plants were propounded, as a source of bio-fuel, by famous Nobel laureate Professor Melvin Calvin, who initiated the researches on Euphorbia lathyris in U.S.A. and encouraged Professor Ashwani Kumar to carry out work on this plant in semi-arid and arid regions of Rajasthan which are similar to Arizona in several respects. The hydrocarbons which contain around 30 per cent tri-terpenoids can be converted in to biodiesel. Our group has carried out investigations in this field for the last 30 years and the present book is pioneer work on improving growth, hydrocarbon yield and productivity of Euphorbia lathyris . It is strongly recommended to students, researchers , industries working in the area of biomass and bio-fuel for green house gas mitigation.
Описание: In order to find viable alternative to petroleum based raw materials, Euphorbia coagulum modified unsaturated polyester and polystyrene waste respectively has been used as hybrid matrix for developing jute fiber reinforced composites. Jute composites have been flame retarded using non halogen based flame proof additives. Collection and coagulation techniques of Euphorbia latex and its characterization has been explored and jute composites have been studied in detail for their physical, thermo-mechanical properties, smoke density, LOI, biodegradation properties and moisture content. Euphorbia jute composites have also been compared with normal hardboard as per IS:1658 and observed as strong alternative for wood and glass reinforced composites in many applications such as automotive, building and construction with high renewable content. Utilization of latex collected from Euphorbia (cactus like) plant and use of polystyrne waste in making composites have also opened new scope to generate employment and economic growth for rural India besides providing a viable, renewable and sustainable alternative for the petroleum based resin in composite development.
Описание: One of the main tasks of phytochemists is isolation and structural elucidation of natural products. In this work the readers will study the details of extraction and characterization of the chemical constituents of two plants of the genus Euphorbia from the family Euphorbiaceae, Euphorbia decipiens Boiss. & Buhse and Euphorbia teheranica Boiss., which are endemic to Iran, and the essential oil of Zataria multiflora Boiss., (Lamiaceae) from Pakistan. The author has used different spectroscopy methods, especially one- and two-dimensional NMR spectra to elucidate the structures of tri- and diterpenoids from the Euphorbia extracts and GC-MS and 13C-NMR for identification and quantification of the oil's constituents. The details of isolation and structural elucidation of myrsinol-type diterpenoids and triterpenoids, biogenesis of some poly- and macro-cyclic diterpenoids isolated from different Euphorbia plants, biological activities and medicinal uses of some species of Euphorbia and their constituents may be useful for the students of phytochemistry and pharmacognosy and those who are interested in the chemistry and biological activity of Euphorbia plants.

Описание: There are many plants in Kashmir valley which have been shown to possess medicinal properties. Among them is Euphorbia helioscopia which is known for its medicinal values. At present drug resistance is a worldwide problem and much emphasis is being laid on the natural plant sources to act as antibiotics which can overcome this problem. Euphorbia helioscopia which is known for its medicinal values has febrifuge and vermifuge activities in its roots and stem respectively. The root is anti helminthic. The milky sap is applied externally to skin eruptions. The seeds, mixed with roasted pepper, have been used in the treatment of cholera and the oil from the seeds has purgative properties. However, isolation of any antibacterial protein has not been reported till date. The essence of the work was to check the antibacterial activity of the plant following its purification and characterization from leaves using conventional protein purification techniques. The lectin is a homodimer (Mr 65000Da), thermostable between 0°C- 40°C but exhibits a narrow range of pH stability being optimally active at pH 7. The lectin shows antimicrobial activity against P. aeruginosa, K.pneumoniae and E. coli.
