Описание: The Bank of England symbolizes the economic strength, influence, and potency of Britain. Founded in 1694, its world famous buildings were built and rebuilt
four times by different architects, most notably Sir John Soane. The Bank's three-and-a-quarter acre complex has included elegant public banking halls and private offices, courtyards
and gardens, warehouses and vaults, residential apartments and guards' barracks.
This lavishly illustrated book examines for the first time the entire architectural history of the
Bank from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries. Drawing on a variety of perspectives, the book relates the history of the Bank of England to current debates on English
economic, social, and urban history, including issues of national identity, mercantile politics, and the commercialization of culture. The book also shows how the building itself has
expressed various historical tensions among the Bank's inhabitants and publics: its directors and detractors, its clerks and clientele, its tourists, and even its mob attackers.

Описание: For anyone who is in the process of building or renovating a home, sustainability is a critical issue especially since energy is likely to remain costly for the foreseeable future. Choosing to use resources responsibly makes as much of a statement about a home as the selection of floor plans, building materials, or furniture. Ideally, our homes should be sustainable and look good at the same time. Building Better showcases single-family homes from around the world whose architecture proves that sustainable and attractive are not contradictions. The book s selection of outstanding, top-quality work provides feasible examples for a new generation of homeowners with a discerning sense of style and environmental responsibility. The spectrum of featured projects ranges from energy efficient restoration and the construction of intelligent extensions to the planning and building of new low-energy or passive homes. The book introduces the latest building forms and materials as well as case studies examining the best division of space, architectural planning, and the use of innovative technologies to control and improve heating and air conditioning. Consequently, Building Better not only provides a striking overview of the topic of sustainable building, but also insightful information on details from technical data to blueprints. In the book, both architects and homeowners have their say. Families talk about their ideas, desires, motivations, and real experiences. Against this background, Building Better is both a practical and inspirational guide for anyone who sees sustainability not as limiting, but rather as a creative opportunity. As such, it is an essential reference for everyone who wants to build a better home.

Описание: While A. Quincy Jones is most recognised as an architect of glamorous homes owned by Los Angeles' cultural elite, he was equally dedicated to less prosperous clients - middle-class families who were quickly populating the postwar Southern California landscape. As this fascinating book reveals, Jones and his collaborators were truly ahead of their time. Their vision of creating affordable, sophisticated and aesthetically pleasing structures prefigured the advent of several important architectural trends such as innovative and sustainable building designs, maximization of available space, careful detailing, and sensitive site planning. Filled with images from noted photographer Jason Schmidt, as well as with period photographs by Julius Shulman and others, this volume looks at every aspect of Jones' career. Original drawings, models, and furniture designs from the architect's personal archives illustrate a wide variety of projects featuring the hallmarks of Jones' style: soaring interior spaces, the blurring of indoor and outdoor spaces, laminated timber construction, angled walls, and innovate use of concrete, redwood, and glass. Essays explore Jones' quintessentially collaborative nature as he consulted with other noted architects, landscapers, interior designers, developers and city planners to create buildings of lasting beauty and importance.

Описание: This ambitious book is about a way of building that for centuries dominated the making of monumental architecture - yet now not only is it lost as practice, but knowledge of its very existence is consigned to oblivion. In pre-modern Europe, the architect built not just with imagination, brick and mortar, but with time, using vast quantities of duration to erect monumental buildings that otherwise would have been impossible. Not mere medieval muddling-through, this entailed a sophisticated set of norms and practices. Virtually all the great cathedrals of France and the rest of Europe were built under this regime, here given the name 'Building-in-Time'. In particular, the major works of pre-modern Italy, from the Pisa cathedral group to the cathedrals of Milan, Venice and Siena, and from the monuments of fourteenth-century Florence to the new St Peter's - the apotheosis of the practice - are thus cast in an entirely new light.
Even as 'Building-in-Time' was flourishing, the fifteenth-century Italian architect Leon Battista Alberti proposed a new temporal regime whereby time would ideally be excluded from the making of architecture ('Building-outside-Time'). Planning and building, which had formed one fluid, imbricated process, were to be sharply divided, and the change that always came with time excluded from architectural facture. Ironically, it was Brunelleschi, as creator of the cupola of Florence cathedral and one of the supreme practitioners of Building-in-Time, who was the lynchpin of Alberti's turn to the arts in the mid-1430s. That he arrived in Florence just at the moment Brunelleschi's dome was being completed was crucial to Alberti's subsequent career in visual culture. Yet his relationship to Brunelleschi was conflicted; first praising and attaching himself to Brunelleschi, later Alberti silently sought to banish him from history's central stage.
In telling this story, Marvin Trachtenberg rewrites the history of medieval and Renaissance architecture in Italy and recasts the turn to modernity in new terms, those of temporality and its role in architectural theory and practice. Recovering this lost element of the deep architectural past allows us also to see the present in a new way: that temporality is not any neutral or secondary factor in modern architecture culture, but an epistemic condition that silently affects all production and experience of the built environment.
