Описание: Evidence - its nature and interpretation - is the key to many topical debates and concerns such as global warming, evolution, the search for weapons of mass destruction, DNA profiling, evidence-based medicine. In 2004 University College London launched a cross-disciplinary research programme Evidence, Inference and Enquiry to explore the question: Can there be an integrated multidisciplinary science of evidence? While this question was hotly contested and no clear final consensus emerged, much was learned on the journey. This book, based on the closing conference of the programme held at the British Academy in December 2007, illustrates the complexity of the subject, with 17 chapters written from a diversity of perspectives including Archaeology, Computer Science, Economics, Education, Health, History, Law, Psychology, Philosophy and Statistics.
Описание: This book examines Edmund Burke`s Philosophical Enquiry in both its historical context and contemporary relevance. It establishes the historical, philosophical, literary, and scientific importance of the Philosophical Enquiry as an independent work.
Описание: This book proposes and defends a radically new account of Plato's method of argument and enquiry in his early dialogues. Vasilis Politis challenges the traditional account according to which these dialogues are basically about the demand for definitions, and questions the equally traditional view that what lies behind Plato's method of argument is a peculiar theory of knowledge. He argues that these dialogues are enquiries set in motion by dilemmas and aporiai, incorporating both a sceptical and an anti-sceptical dimension, and he contends that Plato introduces the demand for definitions, and the search for essences, precisely in order to avoid a sceptical conclusion and hold out the prospect that knowledge can be achieved. His argument will be of great value to all readers interested in Plato's dialogues and in methods of philosophical argument more generally.
Описание: This important and topical volume is composed around the debt and migration crisis in Europe in 2015 (known as the Greece crisis), and written almost concurrently as the two crises developed in quick succession. The central argument here is that Europe’s present crisis suggests a post-colonial bind, or to put in stronger terms, a post-colonial destiny of Europe. The European situation bears remarkable similarity with the post-colonial condition elsewhere in the world and suggests a strong bond between Europe’s present situation and the post-colonial bind in which much of the world finds itself. The purpose of this volume is to examine in the light of 21st century capitalism notions such as debt, crisis, rupture, dialogue, mobilization, neo-liberalism, war and migration, and the old, never to be settled, question of ideology. The volume ends with reflections on Europe’s migration crisis, and reinforces the point that a critical post-colonial sense of history, accumulation, globalization, and the resilience of the nation form will help us reflect on the present European crisis, and draw appropriate lessons.

This book gives a general account of what it is to be a natural kind and puts the account to work illuminating numerous specific examples.
Описание: The "Philosophical Enquiry" was often dismissed as a piece of mere juvenilia. However, Burke`s analysis of the relationship between emotion, beauty and art form is now recognized as one of the first European works on the subject of the Sublime.

Описание: "Over a series of elegantly written, engaging essays, the Enquiry examines the experiential and psychological sources of meaning and knowledge, the foundations of reasoning about matters that lie beyond the scope of our sensory experience and memory, the nature of belief, and the limitations of our knowledge. The positions Hume takes on these topics have been described as paradigmatically empiricist, sceptical, and naturalist and have been widelyinfluential and even more widely decried. The introduction to this eiditon discusses the Enquiry`s origin, evolution, and critical reception, while appendices provide examples of contemporary responses to Hume"--Page 4 of cover.

Volume I was largely completed by Peter Nidditch before his death in 1983. Hispioneering editorial techniques won him acclaim for his edition of An Essay concerning Human Understanding in this series in 1975.
