Описание: Big Box Schools examines the current educational reform movement and the negative impact of the adoption of the big box business model to public education, especially on students, families, and communities of color for whom the public school system is the only option.
In Building Reuse: Sustainability, Preservation, and the Value of Design, Kathryn Rogers Merlino makes an impassioned case that truly sustainable design requires reusing and reimagining existing buildings. The construction and operation of buildings is responsible for 41 percent of all primary energy use and 48 percent of all carbon emissions. The impact of the demolition and removal of an older building can greatly diminish the advantages of adding green technologies to new construction. Reusing existing buildings can be challenging to accomplish, but changing the way we think about environmentally conscious architecture has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, Merlino calls for a more expansive view of historic preservation that goes beyond keeping only the most distinctive structures and requiring that they remain fundamentally unchanged to embracing the creative reuse of even unremarkable buildings.
In support of these points, Building Reuse includes a compelling range of case studies--from an eighteen-story office building to a private home--all located in the Pacific Northwest, a region with a long history of sustainable design and urban growth policies that have made reuse projects feasible.
Описание: In Place of a Show is a compelling account of Western theatre buildings in the 21st century: theatres stripped of their primary purpose, lying empty, preserved as museums, or demolished. Playfully combining first-person narratives, scholarly research and visual documents, Augusto Corrieri explores the material and imaginative potentials of these places, charting interconnections between humans, birds, vegetation, and the beguiling animations of inanimate things, such as walls, curtains and seats. Across four chapters we learn of the uncanny dismantling and reconstitution of a German Baroque auditorium during the Second World War; the phantasmal remains of a demolished music hall in London’s East End; a Renaissance Italian theatre, fleetingly transformed into an aviary by the appearance of a swallow; and a lavish opera house emerging from the Amazon rainforest. In these pages we are invited to discover theatres as sites of anomalous encounters and surprising coincidences: places that might reveal the performative entanglement of human and nonhuman worlds.
Описание: Design interventions for the reuse of existing structures must face the question of the past and the extent to which it should be included in the design for the future. This is the point of departure of Int | AR, a yearly publication on current issues in international adaptive reuse. The 21st century has witnessed a climate of crisis, most often immediate and unpredictable but, at times, foreseen, impending and even expected. Such events and the ability for continuity, recovery and change, require strength borne from adaptability. This volume explores the idea of resilience, from anticipatory strategies to shock absorption, from the reduction of material needs to the widening of the array of resources, from the liberation of traditional constraints to new forms of collaborations, from built-in redundancies to risk mitigation. The examples range from places of resilience in post-industrial cities and in the suburbs of Paris to the rebuilding of post-war Beirut and different resilient approaches to Italy’s and Japan’s earthquake experience. Linking the theoretical concept of resilience to the planning practice of adaptive reuse, the volume demonstrates the interdisciplinary usefulness of this concept in the design disciplines.
