Описание: John Singer Sargents approach to watercolour was unconventional. Disregarding late-nineteenth-century aesthetic standards that called for carefully delineated and composed landscapes filled with transparent washes, his confidently bold, dense strokes and loosely defined forms startled critics and fellow practitioners alike. One reviewer in England, where Sargent spent much of his adult life, called his work swagger watercolours. For Sargent, however, the watercolours were not so much about swagger as about a new way of thinking. In watercolour as opposed to oils his vision became more personal and his works more interconnected. Presenting nearly 100 works of art, this book is the first major publication of Sargents watercolours in twenty years. Each chapter highlights a different subject or theme that attracted the artists attention during his travels through Europe and the Middle East: sunlight on stone, figures reclining on grass, patterns of light and shadow. Insightful essays by the worlds leading experts enhance this book and introduce readers to the full sweep of Sargents accomplishments in the medium, in works that delight the eye as well as challenge our understanding of this prodigiously gifted artist.

Описание: The last in a series of books devoted to the work of John Singer Sargent (1856 1925), this volume covers the figure and landscape works that Sargent produced between 1914 and 1925. The story begins with the artist painting with friends on vacation in Austria in the summer of 1914, unaware that war was about to be declared. The following year, he began working in London on his ideas for the murals at the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, before spending two years in Boston and exploring other parts of America. While in Florida to paint a portrait of John D. Rockefeller, he produced a group of uniquely Floridian watercolors that are breathtaking arrangements of color, form, and light. In July 1918 he accepted an invitation from the British government to travel to the Somme battlefields as an official war artist. This experience led him to produce a remarkable group of works depicting troop movements, off-duty soldiers relaxing, and the studies for his epic canvas, "Gassed." Sargent returned to Boston in 1921 and 1922 to complete his mural projects, and visits to Maine and New Hampshire yielded numerous watercolors. Chapters on Sargent s materials and the framing of his pictures complete this remarkable project."

Описание: Throughout his career - and particularly in the period from 1898 to 1913 - John Singer Sargent painted the spectacular architecture of everyday life in Venice, as he sat alongside the Grand Canal or in a gondola in the sleepy side canals. This book presents the luminous masterworks that Sargent completed during that fertile 15-year period.

Описание: On April 16, 2007, an early spring storm broke through Cape Cods barrier beach. Overnight, the citizens of Chatham had to contend with as much sea level rise as most communities will face in the next fifty years. A dozen homes were swept away in as many months and, today, a new inlet is aimed at the heart of the village. Another hundred houses and the third most lucrative fishing port in New England will be endangered in the coming years. Bill Sargent tells the story of this seemingly microcosmic event, but it is not unique. Nearly 200 other American coastal communities will face similar problems as their barrier beaches break down over the next twenty years. Sea Level Rising is a clarion call for coastal communities to prepare for the chronic effects of global warming. Most importantly, it puts a human face on global warming, arguably the gravest threat to ever face human civilization.
