Описание: A medical practitioner and talented draftsman, Alessandro Ricci was born in Siena, Italy, at the end of the eighteenth century. He traveled extensively throughout Egypt and Sudan between 1817 and 1822. During his stay, he worked as an epigraphist for Giovanni B. Belzoni in the tomb of Seti I and later entered into the service of British consul general Henry Salt and English explorer William John Bankes, on whose behalf he visited and documented Siwa (1820), Sinai (1820), and Nubia (1818-19 and 1821-22). Ricci also became the physician to Ibrahim Pasha's Upper Egypt expedition and achieved fame for daringly saving the life of Ibrahim Pasha during the military campaign that led to Egypt's conquest of Sudan in 1821-22. Upon his return to Italy, Ricci wrote a long account of all his journeys and reworked a series of ninety plates into striking form, yet failed to publish either. In 2009, Daniele Salvoldi identified a complete typewritten copy of Ricci's Travels in the National Archives of Egypt in Cairo. Drawings intended to accompany the text as plates were tracked down in different locations in Italy and the United Kingdom. From Siena to Nubia is the English-translated critical edition, with notes and introductory chapters, of Ricci's travel account, which provides detailed information about the countries he visited, including descriptions of ancient ruins and social customs, botanical and geological remarks, and historical and ethnographical observations. It adds to the recent, growing corpus of exploration literature on nineteenth-century Egypt as well as bringing to light obscure sources important to the early history of Egyptology.

Описание: Coagulation disorders and abnormal platelet activation are frequent findings in hematological malignancies. A hypercoagulable state is induced by malignant cells interacting directly with haemostatic system and activating the coagulation cascade. This is descriptive, prospective analytical case- control study done in Radiation & Isotopes Center Khartoum (RICK) to determine the haemostatic abnormalities and vascular damage of hematological malignancies among the major Sudanese patients.Hemostasis studies shown that, there were decreased level of fibrinogenand antithrombin III, vWf and PAI-1 were significantly elevated in ALL and in AML patients. significantly low platelet counts in AML, CLL and increased in CML and CGL ( CML ph positive) in related to control group. D-dimers was positive in 79 % of patients.platelet aggregation in response to ADP, Collagen, and Epinephrine agonists was decreased in ALL, AML and MM, and in variable in CML and NHL, and increased in CLL and HL.Markers of coagulation and platelet defect was clearly observed in hematological malignancies patients, also indication of fibrinolysis and endothelial activation were confirmed
Описание: The British Empire at war in the deserts of Egypt and the Sudan This special Leonaur edition combines into a single volume two works concerning the campaigns of the British Army in Egypt and the Sudan during the later Victorian era. The text is supported by maps sometimes absent in other editions of the text. The first work concerns the Egyptian Campaign of 1882, sometimes referred to as the Anglo-Egyptian (or Second Anglo-Egyptian) War. The motivation for the conflict arose from a military coup by Egyptian army officers against the Khedive, in the form of Tewfik Pasha, which led the British to believe their own essential interests in the region would be destabilised. In response a substantial naval and military force was despatched which resulted in the bombardment of Alexandria. The British army under Wolseley marched on Cairo and won a decisive victory at the Battle of Tel-el-Kabir which led to a period of occupation of the country. The second work in this substantial book concerns the various campaigns against the Mahdists of the Sudan from 1884 to their final defeat at Omdurman in 1898. This is well known period of British imperial history. Even casual students of the period are aware of the rise of the Mahdist movement, the siege of Khartoum held by the enigmatic General 'Chinese' Gordon, the slaughter of Hicks Pasha and his army, the abortive race to relieve Gordon and monumental battles such as El-Teb, Tamai, Abu Klea and Atbara. These were iconic times for the British Empire when 'the Gatling jammed and the colonel was dead' and the ferocious 'fuzzy wuzzy's' achieved the unthinkable and broke the British infantry square. Two excellent histories and highly recommended. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
Описание: In 1987, Nathaniel Nyok, tormented by thoughts of missing parents and siblings, fled a bloody scene and a burning village in Sudan. Wishing to live at any cost and driven by a confrontational heart-pounding fear, he journeyed through the wild to seek sanctuary in Ethiopia. At eight, he had just capitulated to an orphan-like life with a new title, A Lost Boy of Sudan, living in a refugee camp for fourteen years without a family and a future. The refugee camp became a cage that was too confining, and he languished with a sense of loss. As he battled the loss of home and family, he chose education over revenge as the road to freedom, a road that eventually brought him to America, land of freedom and rules, welcomes and prejudices. In a turning point of surreptitious blessing, grilled by United States immigration lawyers and medical experts in a two-year vetting process of interviews and medical evaluations, he was offered an approval letter, becoming one of a few Lost Boys admitted to the United States. In 2001, he resettled in Atlanta, Georgia, in a community that welcomed him, a stranger, with both joy and contempt. This story portrays his transition to American culture-from the stylishness and glam of Hollywood to battling the prejudices of his new community-as a time of both confusion and hope.
