In this ground-breaking study, Dr Robert MacCann cuts through the tangle of myth and legend to identify the earliest Arthurian sources, three sixth-century Welsh poems by Arthur's bard that give eyewitness accounts. The poems miraculously survived for 800 years, while the Welsh language was evolving, to be preserved in a manuscript of the early 1300s. They reveal the truth about Arthur, showing him to be an authoritative Christian king with an unparalleled military reputation, revered by his men. Most astonishing of all, two of the poems record a disastrous sea voyage to a distant land, Annwfyn, where the Britons fought torrid battles against the inhabitants but were eventually decimated. From details in the poems Dr MacCann shows that Annwfyn was America. Arthur's death is mentioned twice, one poem implying that the badly wounded Arthur was given a mercy killing by his bard and was beheaded to protect his head from mutilation. Only a few survivors reached Britain but Arthur's body remained in Annwfyn, his grave being lost.

Описание:
Originally published in 1988, this volume contains papers from, and commissioned after, "The Passing of Arthur," a conference on Medieval and Renaissance Studies in November 1986. No Arthurian story is experienced without some foreknowledge of its end, which the text acknowledges through a complex range of methods. This collection takes this as its point of origin, suggesting that all such narratives concern the passing of Arthur, even indirectly, so the chapters not only look at the death of Arthur but the passing on and development of the Arthurian literature. The figure of Arthur and the Round Table continues to fascinate contemporary readers. This interesting collection presents a wide range of Arthurian studies approaches representing some of the vast scholarship on the genre.
Описание: The revised version of The Quest of the Holy Grail gives a greater role to Perceval, and introduces a number of knights not found in the Vulgate; but the largest change is that much of the story of Tristan (and of his rivalPalamedes) is incorporated into the story. The achievement of the Grail quest centres on Galahad's healing of Pellehan, which has to be accomplished before the knights can reach the Grail itself. The Death of Arthur is little more than a relatively brief postscript, bringing the story of the adventures of the kingdom of Logres to an end; Lancelot and Guenevere are revealed as lovers, and Arthur fights both Lancelot and then the Romans. Despite thisvictory, he is betrayed and killed by Mordred, as has been foreshadowed from the outset of the new material. The romance ends with king Mark of Cornwall's death when he attempts to kill Lancelot and Bors at the hermitage to whichthey have retreated.
