Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi, a Zimbabwean guitarist, vocalist, and composer, has performed worldwide and released some 50 albums. One of a handful of artists to have a beat named after him, Mtukudzi blends Zimbabwean traditional sounds with South African township music and American gospel and soul, to compose what is known as Tuku Music. In this biography, Jennifer W. Kyker looks at Mtukudzi's life and art, from his encounters with Rhodesian soldiers during the Zimbabwe war of liberation to his friendship with American blues artist Bonnie Raitt. With unprecedented access to Mtukudzi, Kyker breaks down his distinctive performance style using the Shona concept of "hunhu," or human identity through moral relationships, as a framework. By reading Mtukudzi's life in connection with his lyrics and the social milieu in which they were created, Kyker offers an engaging portrait of one of African music's most recognized performers. Interviews with family, friends, and band members make this a penetrating, sensitive, and uplifting biography of one of the world's most popular musicians.
Описание: Although much has been documented about the fast track land reform programme, the gendered outcomes of the programme, especially the consequences on different categories of women had remained an inadequately researched area. Whereas women in single-headed households could obtain land in their own right, the security of land rights for married women has not been adequately investigated. This book makes a contribution to filling this lacuna. The primary purpose of the study was to make a critical evaluation of the distribution of land between men and women under the fast track land reform programme using a gender approach. The approach specified the imbalances in the division of labour between men and women, status of women in the domestic units, the diversity and asymmetry of households, intra-household and extra-household power relations and gender-based differentials as regards access to and control over assets in A1 resettlement areas.
Описание: The focus of this study was on the successes and challenges of the regulatory policies in the small scale mining sector. This was achieved through analysing the regulatory policies and strategies which are being employed in the small scale mining sector and the extent to which these policies have contributed towards attaining sustainable development. The research made use of one of the major approaches in the social sciences which is the qualitative method. The use of a qualitative technique reflects an attempt to ensure an in-depth understanding of the phenomena in question, that is, to understand the successes and challenges of the regulations so as to promote sustainable development. The study found that there has been an improvement and growth of the small scale mining sector after independence in 1980. The amendments of the policies in independent Zimbabwe have paved a way for many small scale miners to register. A considerable number of the unemployed people have found a way to sustain their livelihoods. However there are still a number of challenges which need to be addressed in the policies so as to attain sustainable development.
Описание: This book consists of literature and research findings on citrus irrigation. The literature covers different irrigation strategies that can be used for citrus trees. Emphasis is given to the strengths and limitations of these methods. Special attention was given to the various methods that can be used to determine citrus crop water requirements. The research component is focused on the production of irrigation calendars for citrus in northern Zimbabwe. This was done using the micro Climatological data of the area and the determination of site specific crop coefficients. Different drip irrigation strategies were also evaluated in terms of fruit growth. These strategies include the partial root zone drying, watering both sides of the tree with each side receiving half the crop water requirement, watering one side of the tree only and using the growers’ practice. The irrigation calendars were developed using a crop water productivity model (BUDGET, version 6.2).

Описание: The conjunctural dynamics of the Zimbabwe crisis after 2000 have produced a distinctive pattern of accumulation. Four features are noticeable in this pattern – firstly; disorder and/or violence has become common, both as a general feature and driver of wealth accumulation and the political project accompanying it. Secondly; the State has increasingly become more central and pervasive in driving accumulation and in the distribution of both economic and political goods. Thirdly, the crisis has awakened, reinforced and reshaped a distinctive acquisitive culture peculiar to the period in question, albeit resonating with the historical formation of Zimbabwe’s ruling elite. Lastly, the current crisis has modified and reinforced a culture of ‘strategic contradictions’ within ZANU-PF. This work analyses Zimbabwe’s ‘political economy of crisis’ in the post 2000 period. Using a broad combination of a contextual analysis and a close case-study of informal gold mining it examines how the Zimbabwean ruling elite and those connected to the state have benefited from the unregulated forms of accumulation attending the Zimbabwean crisis.

Описание: This book is about voters' perceptions of a free and fair election. The Zimbabwe’s 2008 harmonised elections were a watershed . The first – past – the post election system employed brought in an almost fifty –fifty parliamentary representation. There was no outright presidential winner as none of the presidential candidates garnered more than fifty percent plus one vote as required at law then. The subsequent presidential run-off paved way for the inclusive government consummated on 15 September 2008. Voters expressed mixed feelings over the harmonised election results. The elections were viewed as free and fair while others felt they were not free and fair at all. This book sought to analyse voters’ perceptions of a free and fair election and shed more light on what may constitute a free and fair election. A philosophical framework on the determinants of a free and fair election is explored. Findings are discussed and recommendations made. The book may be useful to election management bodies (EMBs) and governments.
Описание: The international legal framework of human rights presents itself as universal. But rights do not exist as a mere framework; they are enacted, practiced, and debated in local contexts. Rights After Wrongs ethnographically explores the chasm between the ideals and the practice of human rights. Specifically, it shows where the sweeping colonial logics of Western law meets the lived experiences, accumulated histories, and humanitarian debts present in post-colonial Zimbabwe. Through a comprehensive survey of human rights scholarship, Shannon Morreira explores the ways in which the global framework of human rights is locally interpreted, constituted, and contested in Harare, Zimbabwe, and Musina and Cape Town, South Africa. Presenting the stories of those who lived through the violent struggles of the past decades, Morreira shows how supposedly universal ideals become localized in the context of post-colonial Southern Africa. Rights After Wrongs uncovers the disconnect between the ways human rights appear on paper and the ways in which it is possible for people to use and understand them in everyday life.
Описание: In Imagining a Nation, Ruramisai Charumbira analyzes competing narratives of the founding of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe constructed by political and cultural nationalists both black and white since occupation in 1890. The book uses a wide array of sources?including archives, oral histories, and a national monument?to explore the birth of the racialized national memories and parallel identities that were in vigorous contention as memory sought to present itself as history. In contrast with current global politics plagued by divisions of outsider and insider, patriot and traitor, Charumbira invites the reader into the liminal spaces of the region’s history and questions the centrality of the nation-state in understanding African or postcolonial history today. Using an interdisciplinary methodology, Charumbira offers a series of case studies, bringing in characters from far-flung places to show that history and memory in and of one small place can have a far-reaching impact in the wider world. The questions raised by these stories go beyond the history of colonized or colonizer in one former colony to illuminate contemporary vexations about what it means to be a citizen, patriot, or member of a nation in an ever-globalizing world. Rather than a history of how the rulers of Rhodesia or Zimbabwe marshaled state power to force citizens to accept a single definition of national memory and identity, Imagining a Nation shows how ordinary people invested in the soft power of individual, social, and collective memories to create and perpetuate exclusionary national myths.

Описание: Translation and interpreter training has been on the negative side in many African countries including Zimbabwe. This status quo can not be allowed to continue because it is at the expense of social and economic development. The world is in dire need of communication across social, political and economic lines in order for globalization to fully materialize. However, such a scenario can only be possible if languages barriers are destroyed and the only way to destroy them is through a well organized and efficient translation and interpreting policy. it is in that regard that professional training of translation and interpretation personnel becomes mandatory. This research work is inspired by the realization that not much has been done in most countries to make sure that they move with the fast changing times and intends to influence a positive change of attitude from all stakeholders to take the business of translation and interpreting seriously.

Описание: The debate on whether or not city governments in Zimbabwe enjoy adequate fiscal autonomy has been a hotly contested issue since independence but especially in 2012 with the constitutionalisation of local government. The debate has extended to questions of whether city governments enjoy adequate fiscal powers to produce sustainable services. The book analyses key issues at the centre of the financing of city services, namely, revenue, expenditure, borrowing and intergovernmental financial transfers. The Chapters in the book are organised as follows: Chapter Two discusses the nature and meaning of fiscal decentralisation.Chapter Three discusses the status of revenue, expenditure, borrowing and intergovernmental financial transfers from a historical perspective. Chapter Four assesses the fiscal autonomy enjoyed by the city governments. Chapter Five summarises major findings and gives recommendations. The book is an invaluable contribution to literature on financing of city services and relevant for scholars and practitioners in the fields of urban planning and development, local government, decentralisation and federalism. The lessons it provides resonate beyond its case study.
