Описание: This book attempts a true synthesis of animal physiology, behaviour, and ecology by developing an empirical argument that describes the intimate connections between animal phenotype and environment, using the results of a long-term research programme on migrant shorebirds and their invertebrate prey.

Описание: Many complex molecular interactions are involved in the development of the mammalian brain. Molecules serving as guidance cues for migratory cells, growing axons and for recognition of postsynaptic targets are a major topic for research because they are directly involved in the formation of neuronal circuits, thus creating the foundation for subsequent functional refinement through interactions with the environment. In addition, most guidance cue molecules are also involved in plasticity, damage repair and regeneration in the adult brain. This volume reviews current knowledge on major classes of molecules involved in: guidance of growing axons; tau proteins involved in the establishment of axonal polarity, outgrowth and contact recognition; gangliosides and lectins involved in neuronal migration, neurite outgrowth and contact recognition; and myelin molecules that inhibit nerve regeneration.
Описание: Analysis of the neural tissue presents unique and peculiar technical problems encountered in everyday bench work. Numerous books dealing with cellular and molecular protocols for general use in cell biology are available, but few are specifically devoted exclusively to neurobiology. Moreover, the "cross-talk" between researchers with different backgrounds, i.e. histologists, cell and molecular biologists and physiologists, is still quite difficult, and very often one remains somehow "confined" to his or her own specific field of expertise never daring to explore "mysterious" lands unless having the support of a big laboratory beyond. The general idea beyond this project was to put together the contributions from a number of well-known neuroscientists to produce a book that offers a survey of the most updated techniques for the study of nerve cells. After a long time spent doing research in the neuroscience field, and having acquired a good technical background in certain specific fields of neurobiology we have realized how difficult is to be able to step into a different technology. This book endeavors to assist in that goal.
Philosophers and cognitive scientists address the relationships among the senses and the connections between conscious experiences that form unified wholes.
In this volume, cognitive scientists and philosophers examine two closely related aspects of mind and mental functioning: the relationships among the various senses and the links that connect different conscious experiences to form unified wholes. The contributors address a range of questions concerning how information from one sense influences the processing of information from the other senses and how unified states of consciousness emerge from the bonds that tie conscious experiences together. Sensory Integration and the Unity of Consciousness is the first book to address both of these topics, integrating scientific and philosophical concerns.
A flood of recent work in both philosophy and perception science has challenged traditional conceptions of the sensory systems as operating in isolation. Contributors to the volume consider the ways in which perceptual contact with the world is or may be "multisensory," discussing such subjects as the modeling of multisensory integration and philosophical aspects of sensory modalities. Recent years have seen a similar surge of interest in unity of consciousness. Contributors explore a range of questions on this topic, including the nature of that unity, the degree to which conscious experiences are unified, and the relationship between unified consciousness and the self.

Описание: The book presents an integration of existing ecosystem theories in such a comprehensive way as to enable a full ecological and theoretical pattern to be presented. It shows that ecosystems and their reactions may be understood, provided that all basic systems ecology is applied to different aspects of the properties of ecosystems. Since the publication of the previous two editions of this book, ongoing research and discussions on an international scale have greatly clarified and enhanced this pattern. This progress is presented as Chapter 16 in this new, third edition. It is shown that the integrated ecosystem theory presented can be applied to explain various ecological observations and rules. Audience: Researchers and decision makers whose work involves the study of ecosystems and ecology. This book is also recommended for use in graduate courses.
Описание: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Workshop on Data Integration in the Life Sciences, DILS 2004, held in Leipzig, Germany, in March 2004.The 13 revised full papers and 2 revised short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from many submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on scientific and clinical workflows, ontologies and taxonomies, indexing and clustering, integration tools and systems, and integration techniques.

Описание: A new voice in the nature-nurture debate can be heard at the interface between evolution and development. Phenotypic integration--or, how large numbers of characteristics are related to make up the whole organism, and how these relationships evolve and change their function--is a major growth area in research, attracting the attention of evolutionary biologists, developmental biologists, and geneticists, as well as, more broadly, ecologists, physiologists, and paleontologists. This edited collection presents much of the best and most recent work the topic.
Описание: Constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Data Integration in the Life Sciences, DILS 2008, held in Evry, France in June 2008. This work also includes papers that address various issues in data integration and data management from the life science point of view.
Описание: With no similar books on the market, this volume is a welcome addition. Many current methods use `shallow integration` that employ output-input linking. This book goes further, setting out a systems biology and tumour modeling method called `deep integration`.
Описание: This book addresses the interactions and interrelationships between tumor and host that modulate progression and metastasis. A unique aspect of the book is that it highlights the tumor/host interactions as new targets for therapeutic intervention to control cancer. One promising approach is to target the host rather than the tumor itself, and several authors examine the potential for this novel tactic to oppress the manipulative cancer cell. The book examines the tumor and host relationship from multiple viewpoints: cellular and molecular events that occur during tumor-host cell interactions that control differentiation, cell proliferation, angiogenesis and vasculogenic mimicry, migration, apoptosis, invasion, metastasis. Other topics include the role of the immune response and chemokines/chemokine receptors, and the role of the brain and nutrients in tumor and host survival. Drug resistance limits cancer therapy, and the book emphasizes numerous novel and future therapeutic directions to sensitize drug resistant cells and other approaches that target the tumor and host microenvironment. This book will be of interest to cancer researchers who are interested in understanding metastasis, tumor and host interaction and interrelationships, and who have an interest in cancer control through development of novel targeting agents that impact these processes.
