Автор: Andrews, John Название: Arts And Crafts Furniture ISBN: 1851497315 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781851497317 Издательство: Antique Collectors Club Ltd Рейтинг: Цена: от 3931 р. Наличие на складе: Есть (1 шт.) Описание: The Arts and Crafts Movement produced some remarkable furniture. Its principal designers, though not all, were architects motivated by principles of good design and honest workmanship. The results varied from the sober oak austerity of Voysey and the rural perspectives of the Cotswold School, to the exuberant inlays of Ashbee and even Morris & Co.
Written by a recognised authority on the subject, Arts and Crafts Furniture examines the furniture produced by the movement's protagonists: the Guilds, the Cotswold School, the Glasgow designers, Heal, and Liberty. Starting with the seminal office of G.E. Street and ending with the effects on Ambrose Heal and Gordon Russell, the reader is taken on a colourful journey from the origins of the Movement, through its heyday, to its culmination. Indeed, it is a tour that explains how the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement became an enduring part of modern design.
In this second edition of the standard work of reference the author has included new information about the movement and pieces, much of which has only recently emerged. More than sixty new illustrations have also been added, a few of them showing rare pieces of special interest, but most of them recording more of the furniture belonging to or influenced by the movement
Описание: Originally published in 1938 when Kenneth Clark was director of the National Gallery, London, this book presents Clark's favorite details from paintings in the museum's collection. Newly updated and handsomely illustrated, this landmark book juxtaposes pairs of details rarely viewed together----such as cupids from Velazquez's Rokeby Venus and Correggio's The School of Love----to illuminate fascinating analogies and contrasts between paintings and artists. Clark's erudite but accessible responses to these works are broad in scope and approach, and range from a few lines to an entire history of the still life. Featuring all new color reproductions, One Hundred Details serves as an introduction to art history and offers a unique and intimate look at these paintings through the discerning eye of a world-renowned art historian and director.

Описание: Although renowned for his work as a verrier, lamps did not form a significant part of Galle's repertoire in glass until immediately prior to 1900. Indeed, only in the last few years of his life does it appear that he realised the full aesthetic potential of opalescent glass viewed by transmitted light.
In an Art Nouveau context, Galle's creations reached their apogee between 1900 and his death in 1904, a brief period during which he adapted the shape of much of his glassware to its theme. Vases decorated with lilies became lily-shaped in a marriage of form and function. Fully-ripened gourds pendent on their vines glowed from within at the touch of a switch. Mushroom lamps brought the concept to full embodiment in the metamorphosis of the giant fungi into light fixtures.
This comprehensive volume catalogues the full range of light fixtures produced by the Galle cristallerie, from those made during his lifetime to those manufactured for more than twenty-five years after his death. Including table, bedside, hanging and wall models, Galle Lamps reveals the extraordinary variety of thematic shade-and-base combinations introduced by the firm: butterflies, moths, dragonflies, swallows and eagles hover, flutter, glide or swoop over flora and mountain vistas in a seemingly endless interplay of Nature's decorative motifs.

Описание: The sheer range and complexity of the subject of European furniture makes it impossible to adequately evaluate in anything less than this detailed and lavishly illustrated work.
Europe in the nineteenth century was a region of great political and industrial change, so it was inevitable that the period would be responsible for a wide variety of different styles. The European furniture scene at this time was dominated by France, where the aspirations of the two Napoleons to recreate France's earlier grandeur helped to promote French fashions all over Europe. In addition, other influences filtered into Europe from Turkey, Africa, and the Far and Middle East, having a notable impact on design and decoration throughout the century.
Although this period saw the advent of mass production, it was a highly creative era - often leading to bizzare results, as designers vied to produce new styles. Each decade also witnessed the manufacture of the excellently crafted and beautifully designed pieces which are so sought after and appreciated today.
The original edition of this book has become a standard reference work for auctioneers, dealers and collectors alike. Now significantly revised and expanded, with over 300 new colour illustrations, this classic work discusses the complexities of European furniture produced between 1830 and 1910, providing information and insight as well as a visual record of some of the best examples of the period.
Contents: Colour Plates; Definition of Styles; France; 'Franglais'; Germany, Austria and Switzerland; German Cabinet Makers, Designers and Retailers; Iberian Peninsula; Italy; Low Countries; Flanders; Holland; Dutch Marquetry; Details; Ottoman Empire; Russia; Scandinavia; Marble; Bronze Dore (Ormolu); Woods; Major Nineteenth-Century Exhibitions; List of Major International Exhibitions; Bibliography.
For the past 65 years, the National Galleries of Scotland has displayed the acclaimed Bridgewater Collection, one of the world's most important groups of Old Master paintings still under private ownership. Consisting largely of French and Italian works, the collection includes Titian's "Diana and Actaeon" (recently purchased by the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Gallery of London) and "Diana and Callisto," each an undeniable masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance.
This catalogue accompanies an unprecedented exhibition of 25 paintings and drawings from the National Galleries of Scotland. In addition to the works by Titian, the book features paintings and drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Jacopo Bassano, Tintoretto, and Veronese. With special emphasis on the Titian masterpieces, the authors discuss the Bridgewater Collection and its long, proud history of bringing Old Master paintings to public view.

Описание: The 19th century produced dozens of independent designers, particularly towards the end of the period. As the furniture trade developed, so manufacturers and retailing split. Catalogues began to be used in retail shops as they are today. Competition between retailers and the use of the new design books resulted in a large number of designs, not only new ones but also a constant looking backwards to earlier centuries for inspiration. This change in the structure of the industry made full use of highly individual interpretations of Gothic, Renaissance, Elizabethan, "Naturalistic" styles, Egyptian, Old French, Louis Quatorze, Louis Quinze and Italian decorations, all applied to a wide variety of furniture. The complexity of the subject is explained by a number of illustrations and this is the reason why some 6,000 appear within this book. The Dictionary is made up from 49 contemporary design and pattern books issued by manufacturers such as Heal's, Smith, Tatham, King, Pugin, Morris and Liberty's. Each piece of furniture has been sorted into its physical characteristics (e.g. table with three legs) so that it is only necessary to glance down the list of contents to identify into which category any particular piece belongs. Within each category the pieces are arranged in chronological order so that the evolution of each type is clearly seen. This "Pictorial Dictionary" provides the first major study on the very wide range of furniture produced in this prolific century and it has, consequently, become the standard work of reference on the subject.
