Описание: Paolo Veronese is acknowledged as one of the giants of Venetian Renaissance painting. His artistic production was richly varied, extending from imposing altarpieces to smaller religious paintings for private clients, from grand portraits to sensual episodes drawn from the classical tradition. Veronese was also an outstanding draughtsman, and his graphic oeuvre ranged from preliminary sketches to highly finished chiaroscuro sheets. A foreigner in Venice, he created paintings for Venetian clients and settings, as well for the mainland and export abroad. Thus, Veroneses art was unusually versatile for its time. This magnificently illustrated book will display this extraordinary versatility and examine Veroneses artistic practice, concentrating on works from North American collections. For a sixteenth-century painter, many of whose works are in fresco or on enormous canvases still in situ, Veronese is unusually broadly represented in North America. At the same time, the broad spectrum of Veronese as a painter and draughtsman has not been available to American audiences in over two decades. This publication authored by an international team of experts, will be a major contribution to Veronese studies.

Описание: Inspired by the story of Christ's first miracle as recounted in the Gospel of St. John, Paolo Veronese's dazzling, monumental painting The Wedding at Cana was commissioned to be hung in the refectory of the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. The artist stages a sumptuous banquet for the wedding guests at Cana, packed with intriguing details: a seemingly endless parade of precious drinking vessels, platters and cake stands containing mouth-watering desserts. Veronese transforms a religious scene into a worldly event, a glamorous ceremony whose participants include not only a colourful bevy of cosmopolitan Venetians of the artist's day, but also a generous sampling of servants, jesters and animals, all of this against the backdrop of magnificent architectural perspectives and luminous skies. Veering from realism to the fantastical, in a virtuoso display of his own vision of art and life, Veronese's masterpiece reserves at least two remarkable surprises, once the true identity of a number of personages is revealed: the bride and groom, and especially the musicians who perform for them.
