Описание: Next-generation Internet providers face high expectations, as contemporary users worldwide expect high-quality multimedia functionality in a landscape of ever-expanding network applications. This volume explores the critical research issue of turning today’s greatly enhanced hardware capacity to good use in designing a scalable multicast protocol for supporting large-scale multimedia services. Linking new hardware to improved performance in the Internet’s next incarnation is a research hot-spot in the computer communications field. The methodical presentation deals with the key questions in turn: from the mechanics of multicast protocols to current state-of-the-art designs, and from methods of theoretical analysis of these protocols to applying them in the ns2 network simulator, known for being hard to extend. The authors’ years of research in the field inform this thorough treatment, which covers details such as applying AOM (application-oriented multicast) protocol to IPTV provision and resolving the practical design issues thrown up in creating scalable AOM multicast service models.
Описание: This book is a revised version of the author's PhD thesis, which was selected as the winning thesis of the 2001 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Competition. Ion Stoica did his PhD work at Carnegie Mellon University with Hui Zhang as thesis adviser. The author addresses the most pressing and difficult problem facing the Internet community today: how to enhance the Internet to support rich functionalities, such as QoS and traffic management, while still maintaining the scalability and robustness properties embodied in the original Internet architecture. The monograph presents complete solutions including architectures, algorithms, and implementations dealing with fundamental problems of today's Internet: providing guaranteed services, differentiated services, and flow protection. Compared to existing solutions, Ion Stoica's solution eliminates the complex operations on both data and control paths in the network core. All in all, the research results presented in this monograph constitute one of the most important contributions to networking research in the past ten years.
Описание: This monograph describes a new family of algorithms for the simultaneous localization and mapping problem in robotics (SLAM). SLAM addresses the problem of acquiring an environment map with a roving robot, while simultaneously localizing the robot relative to this map. This problem has received enormous attention in the robotics community in the past few years, reaching a peak of popularity on the occasion of the DARPA Grand Challenge in October 2005, which was won by the team headed by the authors. The FastSLAM family of algorithms applies particle filters to the SLAM Problem, which provides new insights into the data association problem that is paramount in SLAM. The FastSLAM-type algorithms have enabled robots to acquire maps of unprecedented size and accuracy, in a number of robot application domains and have been successfully applied in different dynamic environments, including the solution to the problem of people tracking.
Описание: The past decade has witnessed the rapid development of a new mathematical tool, called wavlet analysis, for analyzing complex signals. It has begin to play a serious role in applications ranging from communications to geophysics, and from simulations to image processing. Like Fourier analysis (of which it is a generalization), or musical notation, wavelet analysis provides a method for representing a set of complex phenomena in a simpler, more compact, and thus more efficient manner. This text introduces the ideas and methods of wavelet analysis, relates them to previously known methods in mathematics and engineering, and shows how to apply wavelet analysis to digital signal processing. It begins by describing the multiscale (sometimes called "fractal") nature of information in many aspects of thereal world; it then turns to the algebra and analysis of wavelet matrices, scaling and wavelet functions, and the corresponding analysis of square-integrable functins on a space. The discussion then turns from the continuous to the discrete and shows how a properly selected set of wavelets can be used to represent -- and even differentiate -- a wide range of signls efficiently and effectively. The last part of the book presents a wide variety of applications of wavelets to probllems in data compression and telecommunications.

Описание: Provides practical advice on breaking down the implementation and deployment of voice mobility networks within the office, across the campus, and on the road.Offers a complete primer on enterprise-grade Wi-Fi networking for voice mobility at scale, whether as a single-mode or dual-mode network, including information on the newest 802.11n standard and how these standards directly impact voice mobility.Includes methods of integrating existing or new VoIP networks with 3G+, CDMA 2000, WCDMA, HSPA, and WiMAX cellular networks using fixed/mobile convergence (FMC). This book provides a comprehensive examination of IP-based voice mobility, covering every step in deploying multimodal voice mobility networks. Each segment of the entire voice mobility solution is described with an eye towards the inherent problems of high-scale mobility, from wired infrastructure to end device, across multiple networks and technologies.Voice mobility is introduced and defined at a basic level before the book examines the high-level components of a scalable voice mobility solution. Chapters focus on several types of transport networks in greater depth, including voice quality metrics and testing, high-density enterprise Wi-Fi voice networks, cellular networks, and high-level networking technologies. The security of VoIP networks is also considered. The book explores standalone VoIP networks and finally provides an investigation of the current and upcoming set of fixed/mobile convergence approaches. This book is an invaluable guide for anyone looking towards voice mobility as a solution to real-world business problems: IT managers and executives looking to understand the potential for converting offices to all-wireless; network designers and architects planning on rolling out a fully-mobile voice network; and administrators operating or troubleshooting voice mobility networks.
Описание: Unlike most networking texts, this book examines optical networking by focusing on physical transport and switching, the process and technique of building networking hardware, and discusses new technologies being deployed in the marketplace, such as Metro Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM), Resilient Packet Rings, Optical Ethernet, etc...The book will be broken down into four sections: optical transmission, networking protocols, data switching, and networking. Case studies of high-speed SERDES devices, SONET framers, Ethernet MACs, and network processors will also be included.
Описание: Based on the Global System for Mobile (GSM) standard, UMTS, endorsed by major standards bodies and manufacturers, is the planned standard for mobile users around the world and is at present still being made available. Once UMTS is fully available geographically, computer and phone users can be constantly attached to the Internet as they roam, and have the same set of capabilities no matter where they travel. As researchers, developers and operators prepare for these advances, they need to have access to a resource providing cutting-edge advice on QoS and QoE management issues applied specifically to UMTS networks. This book sets out to provide state-of-the art advice on Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) in Universal Mobile Telecommunications (UMTS) networks. The approach is comprehensive, tackling mobile service planning, provisioning, performance monitoring and optimization issues in a single, accessible resource. It includes strong sections on WCDMA QoS and QoE management functions in packet core and backbone networks. It provides a strong focus on QoS and QoE issues related to present and forthcoming application services, including multimedia messaging service (MMS), school-wide information system (SWIS), gaming, streaming and browsing. It illustrates all points with examples gleaned from state-of-the art research from around the globe. It is suitable for operators, vendors, deployers, consultants and managers specializing in the research and development of products and tools for QoS and QoE management in UMTS networks. It will also appeal to postgraduate students and researchers in the field of telecommunications and specializing in UMTS QoS and QoE principles and practice.
