Описание: Borzello explores the role of the nude in 20th- and 21st-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists creating contemporary nudes. Her fascinating text is complemented by a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations. The story begins with a tale of life, death and resurrection – an investigation into how and why the nude has survived and flourished in an art world that prematurely announced its demise. Subsequent chapters take a thematic approach, focusing in turn on Body art and Performance art, the new perspectives of women artists, the nude in painting, portraiture and sculpture and in its most extreme and graphic expressions that intentionally push the boundaries of both art and our comfort zone.

Описание: The dawn of the daguerrotype 150 years ago has brought not only the birth of photography, but a renaissance in the study of nudes as well. This book tells the story of nudes in the photographic medium, from the world's most important photographers. Starting with the pioneer Daguerre, whose 1839 photograph of a nude sculpture set artistic precedent, this book spans the decades to early twentieth century greats such as Alfred Steiglitz, Man Ray and Brassai, to contemporary photographers such as Robert Mapplethorpe, David Levinthal and Duane Michals. The volume is a tour through a photographic gallery which treats the viewer to aspects of female beauty from the perspective of the camera lens. Set against a historical background, this book contrasts the art of taking pictures and its technological innovations with the academic tradition of painting nudes. The appearance of a new means of capturing the nude, the camera, introduced an entirely new dimension to the fine arts. The volume highlights the once fervent competition between the two media of photography and painting, with refinements in technology allowing the newer art form to come into its own. Each photograph is accompanied by a short essay that explains its story and interprets the photographic subjects. Biographical entries summarize the information belonging to each work.

Описание: The evolution of the genre of the nude in art illustrated through 200 important works by major artists from the 19th century to the present. The theme of the nude has always exercised a particular fascination on artists and viewers alike, and the representation of the human form has inspired some of the finest works in art history. One of the most challenging and stimulating subjects in the entire artistic tradition, the nude did not lose its allure even in the period in which art began to move in a different direction to that of the imitation of reality. In fact it showed an unexpected versatility and an undimmed power of suggestion even at the moments of greatest conflict with any traditional hypothesis of figuration, as at the time when nonrepresentational art reigned supreme. This volume, which aims to offer a fascinating visual survey of the nude, features over 200 paintings, sculptures and drawings - often celebrated masterpieces - and examines a period spanning over two hundred years. The book features works by the most important artists of the last two centuries beginning with neoclassical artists such as Canova and Ingres. Next it examines the whole of the 19th century, from Courbet to Cezanne, from romanticism to impressionism. It then moves on to the elegance of the Secession with Klimt, the revolution of the avant-garde with Picasso and all the movements from surrealism to existentialism, with works by Magritte, Dalf and Giacometti. Finally, it covers the second half of the last century up until the present day with artists such as Bourgeois, Gormley, Abramovic, Acconci, Beecroft, and Barney.

Описание: This volume presents a selection of 200 extraordinary images that reflect the central role played by the genre of the nude in the history of photography. Ever since the invention of photography in 1839 the nude has constituted a favorite subject among the practitioners of the medium. The development of photography in the first half of the 20th century ran in parallel to the evolution of the various creative movements in other artistic media: painting, sculpture and drawing. Dadaism, surrealism, futurism, constructivism and above all the Neue Sachlichkeit movement all found a congenial means of expression in photography that could be used alongside painting. In the second half of the 20th century, artists working with the medium of photography responded to the ever more insistent use of the nude in marketing, in advertising and in public life in general by adopting conceptual positions. Photographers sought, with growing intensity, to come up with new strategies: from the investigation and creation of the image itself to the use of blowups to produce pictures reminiscent of paintings and the combination of image and text: strategies that have led to an ever closer and more indissoluble interweaving of photography with painting and vice versa. Through numerous extraordinary examples the volume documents the historical and stylistic development of the nude from its origins with the first daguerreotypes to the provocative images of contemporary photographers from Nadar, Stieglitz, Man Ray and Weston to Arbus, Mapplethorpe, Araki and Goldin.
