Описание: Based on modern Sobolev methods, this text for advanced undergraduates and graduate students is highly physical in its orientation. It integrates numerical methods and symbolic manipulation into an elegant viewpoint that is consonant with implementation by digital computer. The first five sections form an informal introduction that develops students' physical and mathematical intuition. The following section introduces Hilbert space in its natural environment, and the next six sections pose and solve the standard problems. The final seven sections feature concise introductions to selected topics, including Sturm-Liouville problems, Fourier integrals, Galerkin's method, and Sobolev methods. 1994 edition. 64 figures. Exercises.
Описание: Magnificently embellished letters of the alphabet—approximately 40 to a page—plus one page of roman and arabic numbers—primarily taken from Jones’s illustrated The Psalms of David. Meticulously crafted Victorian designs range from small to large, simple to spectacular.
This well-known text uses a limited number of basic concepts and techniques -- Hamilton's principle, the theory of the first variation and Bernoulli's separation method -- to develop complete solutions to linear boundary value problems associated with second order partial differential equations such as the problems of the vibrating string, the vibrating membrane, and heat conduction. It is directed to advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics, applied mathematics, physics, and engineering who have completed a course in advanced calculus. In the first three chapters, Professor Sagan introduces Hamilton's principle and the theory of the first variation; he then discusses the representation of the vibrating string, the vibrating membrane and heat conduction (without convection) by partial differential equations. Bernoulli's separation method and infinite series solutions of homogeneous boundary value problems are introduced as a means for solving these problems. The next three chapters take up Fourier series, self-adjoint boundary value problems, Legendre polynomials, and Bessel functions. The concluding three chapters address the characterization of eigenvalues by a variational principle; spherical harmonics, and the solution of the Schroedinger equation for the hydrogen atom; and the nonhomogeneous boundary value problem. Professor Sagan concludes most sections of this excellent text with selected problems (solutions provided for even-numbered problems) to reinforce the reader's grasp of the theories and techniques presented.
Описание: This high-level treatment by a noted mathematician considers one-dimensional singular integral equations involving Cauchy principal values. Intended for graduate students and professionals, its coverage includes such topics as the Holder condition, Hilbert and Riemann-Hilbert problems, the Dirichlet problem, inversion formulas for arcs, and many other areas. 1992 edition.

Описание: Based on practical work with mathematical physics done in the Physics Department of Moscow State University, this outstanding text by three of the Faculty's distinguished members focuses on a wide range of problems. Chapters are divided according to the method of solution -- thereby giving students the opportunity, through independent work, to gain elementary problem-solving skills where mathematical physics equations are concerned. In addition, there is a supplement devoted to the special coordinate systems of mathematical physics, together with a section devoted to special functions. Designed not only for students but for engineers and research workers, this volume includes an exceptionally useful selection of problems, a number of which are accompanied by detailed instructions and solutions.
Описание: One of the most useful and practical expositions of Fourier's series, and spherical, cylindrical, and ellipsoidal harmonics, this classic offers a basic but thorough treatment of material that is assumed in many other studies but rarely available in concise form. Includes 190 problems, approximately half with answers. 1893 edition.
Описание: Whimsically and delightfully presented mathematical recreations by the author of Alice in Wonderland are solved by arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, differential calculus and transcendental properties. 6 illustrations. Two books bound as one.

Описание: Intended for college-level physics, engineering, or mathematics students, this volume offers an algebraically based approach to various topics in applied math. It is accessible to undergraduates with a good course in calculus which includes infinite series and uniform convergence. Exercises follow each chapter to test the student's grasp of the material; however, the author has also included exercises that extend the results to new situations and lay the groundwork for new concepts to be introduced later. A list of references for further reading will be found at the end of each chapter. For this second revised edition, Professor Dettman included a new section on generalized functions to help explain the use of the Dirac delta function in connection with Green's functions. In addition, a new approach to series solutions of ordinary differential equations has made the treatment independent of complex variable theory. This means that the first six chapters can be grasped without prior knowledge of complex variables. However, since Chapter 8 depends heavily on analytic functions of a complex variable, a new Chapter 7 on analytic function theory has been written.

Описание: "A very useful addition to the chemical literature." -- Journal of the American Chemical Society. Designed to aid students and teachers in advanced physical chemistry, spectroscopy, or quantum chemistry courses, this carefully written book is unique in the variety of problems covered and the detail of the solutions provided. The book consists of 12 chapters, each of which includes a short introduction, followed by approximately 20 problems with detailed solutions. Also provided in each chapter are approximately 10 "supplementary" problems, with answers but no solutions. Chapter headings include: Atomic Physics and the Old Quantum Theory Waves and Superposition Postulates and Formalism of Quantum Mechanics Simple Exactly Soluble Problems in Wave Mechanics Angular Momentum Perturbation and Variation Theory Hydrogen-Like Atoms Electronic Structure of Atoms Electronic Structure of Molecules Radiation and Matter Molecular Spectroscopy Scattering Theory Assuming some facility with calculus, mechanics, and electricity and magnetism, the authors offer thorough and up-to-date coverage of both modern subject matter and standard topics. Interspersed among classic examples are lucid applications involving such topics as Fourier transforms, Poisson brackets, uncertainty, the virial theorem, van der Waals forces, lasers, tunneling, group theory, and the Born approximation. Students will also find 10 helpful appendixes covering a range of mathematical topics, a list of references cited in solutions to the problems, and a Subject Index. With its unique variety of problems, unusually detailed solutions, and wide range of applications, this book not only expounds the principles of quantum theory but also helps students develop the proper intuition for solving problems in a complex and subtle field of endeavor.

Описание: A marriage of the finite-differences method with variational methods for solving boundary-value problems, the finite-element method is superior in many ways to finite-differences alone. This self-contained text for advanced undergraduates and graduate students is intended to imbed this combination of methods into the framework of functional analysis. 1980 edition.
