This volume constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Swarm, Evolutionary, and Memetic Computing, SEMCCO 2015, held in Hyderabad, India, in December 2015.
The 23 full papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 40 submissions for inclusion in the proceedings. The papers cover a wide range of topics in swarm, evolutionary, memetic and other intelligent computing algorithms and their real world applications in problems selected from diverse domains of science and engineering.
Описание: Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are population-based, stochastic search algorithms that mimic natural evolution. Due to their ability to find excellent solutions for conventionally hard and dynamic problems within acceptable time, EAs have attracted interest from many researchers and practitioners in recent years. This book “Variants of Evolutionary Algorithms for Real-World Applications” aims to promote the practitioner’s view on EAs by providing a comprehensive discussion of how EAs can be adapted to the requirements of various applications in the real-world domains. It comprises 14 chapters, including an introductory chapter re-visiting the fundamental question of what an EA is and other chapters addressing a range of real-world problems such as production process planning, inventory system and supply chain network optimisation, task-based jobs assignment, planning for CNC-based work piece construction, mechanical/ship design tasks that involve runtime-intense simulations, data mining for the prediction of soil properties, automated tissue classification for MRI images, and database query optimisation, among others. These chapters demonstrate how different types of problems can be successfully solved using variants of EAs and how the solution approaches are constructed, in a way that can be understood and reproduced with little prior knowledge on optimisation.
Описание: Industrial applications of evolutionary algorithms is intended as a resource for both experienced users of evolutionary algorithms and researchers that are beginning to approach these fascinating optimization techniques.Experienced users will find interesting details of real-world problems, advice on solving issues related to fitness computation or modeling, and suggestions on how to set the appropriate parameters to reach optimal solutions.Beginners will find a thorough introduction to evolutionary computation, and a complete presentation of several classes of evolutionary algorithms exploited to solve different problems. Inside, scholars will find useful examples on how to fill the gap between purely theoretical examples and industrial problems. The collection of case studies presented is also extremely appealing for anyone interested in Evolutionary Computation, but without direct access to extensive technical literature on the subject. After the introduction, each chapter in the book presents a test case, and is organized so that it can be read independently from the rest: all the information needed to understand the problem and the approach is reported in each part. Chapters are grouped by three themes of particular interest for real-world applications, namely prototype-based validation, reliability and test generation. The authors hope that this volume will help to expose the flexibility and efficiency of evolutionary techniques, encouraging more companies to adopt them; and that, most of all, you will enjoy your reading.
Описание: Ideal as a reference both for experienced users and novices, this publication combines a thorough introduction to evolutionary computation with details of its application to real-world problems and advice on tackling a wealth of issues in its implementation.

Описание: From nature, we observe swarming behavior in the form of ant colonies, bird flocking, animal herding, honey bees, swarming of bacteria, and many more. It is only in recent years that researchers have taken notice of such natural swarming systems as culmination of some form of innate collective intelligence, albeit swarm intelligence (SI) - a metaphor that inspires a myriad of computational problem-solving techniques. In computational intelligence, swarm-like algorithms have been successfully applied to solve many real-world problems in engineering and sciences. This handbook volume serves as a useful foundational as well as consolidatory state-of-art collection of articles in the field from various researchers around the globe. It has a rich collection of contributions pertaining to the theoretical and empirical study of single and multi-objective variants of swarm intelligence based algorithms like particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO), bacterial foraging optimization algorithm (BFOA), honey bee social foraging algorithms, and harmony search (HS). With chapters describing various applications of SI techniques in real-world engineering problems, this handbook can be a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners, giving an in-depth flavor of what SI is capable of achieving.

Описание: Swarming species such as flocks of birds or schools of fish exhibitfascinating collective behaviors during migration and predatoravoidance. Similarly, engineered multi-agent dynamic systems such as groups of autonomous ground, underwater, or air vehicles (“vehicle swarms”) exhibit sophisticated collective behaviors while maneuvering. In this book we show how to model and control a wide range of suchmulti-agent dynamic systems and analyze their collective behaviorusing both stability theoretic and simulation-based approaches. Inparticular, we investigate problems such as group aggregation, socialforaging, formation control, swarm tracking, distributed agreement, and engineering optimization inspired by swarm behavior.

Описание: Traditional methods for creating intelligent computational systems have privileged private `internal` cognitive and computational processes. This work argues that human intelligence derives from the interactions of individuals in a social world and further, that this model of intelligence can be applied to artificially intelligent systems.

Описание: The laws that govern the behavior of social insect colonies continue to mesmerize researchers. While individual ants and bees are unsophisticated, in colonies they can solve complex tasks, a prime example being the ability of ant colonies to find shortest paths from their nests to food sources. Task solving in social insects is based on self-organization, which often evolves from simple means of communication, either directly or indirectly via changing the environment. Scientists have applied the behavior of social insects in new approaches to optimization and the control of robots. This field of research is now referred to as swarm intelligence, and it is characterized by a decentralized and probabilistic way of working, the key advantages being robustness and flexibility. This edited book is intended both as an overview of swarm intelligence and as a guide to the most interesting recent developments, and thus will be of interest to both novices and experienced researchers in the field.
