Russian Modernism maps the Russian version of expressionism and puts it in the context of the history of 20th century art.
Russian Modernism is dedicated to the radical modernist movements in Russian and German art during the early years of the 20th century. Their development was parallel and often intertwined. Artists such as Vasily Kandinsky or Alexej von Jawlensky are claimed by the Germans but remain Russian artists for the Russians. The Burluk brothers, who became celebrities of the Russian radical art scene, participated in the first exhibition of the Blauer Reiter. Russian artists travelled to Germany and lived there, while their German counterparts were aware of what was shown in Moscow exhibition halls. The diverse art movement “expressionism” was formed in Germany at the beginning of the 1910s and was given the name by the critic Herwarth Walden. Members of groups such as Die Brucke and the Blauer Reiter were initially influenced by the French Fauves movement, and their Russian contemporaries also tried to find new artistic truth in Paris, ‘la Ville Lumiere’. However, both in Germany and Russia the new French influence underwent radical transformation. Beautifully illustrated and designed, this book provides an insight into the work of Russian and German artists in the early years of the 20th century.

Описание: "Modernism: Designing a New World" is the first book to explore Modernism in the designed world from a truly international perspective, and across all the arts.
It offers a reassessment of the idea of Modernism and reveals the fundamental ways in which it has shaped our own world and its visual culture. Modernism flourished during the years
1914 to 1939.
As a movement it was the key point of reference for 20th century architecture, design and art. Modernists had a Utopian desire to create a better world,
frequently combined with social and political beliefs that design and art could transform society. The range of objects illustrated - including painting, sculpture, film, photography, prints
and collage as well as architecture, interiors, furniture, manufactured products, graphic and fashion design - reflect the period's emphasis on the unity of the arts and the key role of the
fine arts in shaping contemporary visual culture.Europe and America take centre stage but the reach of Modernism is demonstrated by selected works from around the world, including
Russia, Palestine and Japan.
Conceived by four of the most influential art historians of our time, this groundbreaking book has now been updated and expanded to include the most recent developments in contemporary art. The original authors have been joined by David Joselit to provide the most comprehensive history of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries ever published.
More than 120 articles are presented in a year-by-year structure, with each focusing on a crucial event from the creation of a seminal work to the opening of a major exhibition to tell the myriad stories of art from 1900 to the present. Key turning points and breakthroughs in modernism are explored, as are the antimodernist reactions that proposed alternative visions of art and the world. The book s flexible structure and extensive cross-referencing allow readers to follow the many developments in the art world, from the influence of surrealism to the emergence of minimalism. A four-part introduction outlines the methodologies governing the discipline of art history, and two roundtable discussions examine the questions raised by the past while looking ahead to the future.

Описание: In the 1920s, London was a city on the cusp of change. Just as dance halls and jazz-age decadence displaced wartime austerity, a new generation of artists and designers sought to enliven the city's architecture, erecting dazzling buildings in the emerging art deco style. In contrast with the aging Victorian structures that dotted the city, these bright and colorful buildings--from the Hoover factory to the Ideal House by Raymond Hood, who later designed New York's Rockefeller Center--communicated the city's aspirations as a thriving, modern metropolis. In the decades since, London's art deco buildings have lost none of their appeal. Millions of visitors gaze up at the headquarters of the Daily Telegraph and the nearby Daily Express, take in the elegance of Eltham Palace, or sip a martini at the Savoy. The city's most popular art deco attraction, however, is the London Underground, which boasts a series of art deco and modernist stations, designed throughout the 1920s and '30s by noted architect Charles Holden. In Modernism London Style, architectural historian Christoph Rauhut, with the help of three hundred photographs by Niels Lehmann, captures the architectural art deco heritage of London in a thrilling photographic tour. A portrait of the city during the interwar years, it chronicles the creativity of the artists and designers of the period--and the currents in the city's culture that helped shape their work. Insightful essays and an introduction by architecture scholar Adam Caruso shed light on some of the key features that characterize art deco, from floral and animal motifs to Egyptian themes. For readers planning a trip to London and hoping to place these striking buildings, the book also includes a detailed register and maps.

Описание: Varieties of Modernism discusses the art of the middle third of the twentieth century. It consists of a short general introduction and four parts, each
concentrating on a key aspect of the art of the period. With the rise of the European dictatorships of the 1930s, Paris regained its position at the forefront of the modern
Accordingly, the first part looks at developments in French art: abstraction, the figurative tradition and Surrealism, in the years leading up to the Second World
War. In the next two parts, the focus moves across the Atlantic, charting the shift from the widespread social realism of the Depression years to the triumphant modernist abstraction of
the postwar period. The final part discusses the challenge posed to canonical modernism by various new approaches ranging from 'combine paintings' to Pop Art, 'happenings' and the
Varieties of Modernism is the third in a series of four books about twentieth-century art. Each book can be read independently and is accessible to
the general reader. However, as a series they form the main texts of an Open University third-level course, Art of the Twentieth Century, which examines the fundamental changes that
took place in the concepts and practices of art during the twentieth century.
If modernism began in the magazines, as Robert Scholes and Clifford Wulfman argue, then the study of modern culture should begin with these publications. Scholes and Wulfman's radically inclusive approach not only considers the "little" modernist magazines alongside the "big" or mass magazines often dismissed as antithetical to modernism's elite culture, but also insists that scholars must investigate their contents as a whole--from poetry to advertising--to appreciate their full significance. The book's appendix also reprints a previously uncollected critique of popular British magazines from 1917 and 1918 by Ezra Pound.
Описание: New and vintage photography of America's modernist architectural mecca. A visionary artist who has achieved worldwide fame, Julius Shulman transformed architectural photography. From his earliest photographs to those taken today, his work demonstrates a profound sensitivity to and appreciation for the spaces in which people live. These spaces, as seen through his lens, are at once luminous and profoundly shadowed, becoming spaces of intrigue and extraordinary beauty into which the observer longs to enter. This volume focuses on Shulman's Chicago work. This town is America's First City of Architecture, and its modern architecture is the ideal subject for Shulman's lens. Featured here are the elegantly modern Minsk House, designed by Keck & Keck in 1955; the 1960 Burton Frank House, a mid-century modern gem; architect Harry Weese's inspired modernist home and studio of 1957; and many other modern masterpieces.
