Описание: Recent years have seen strong interest and a growing amount of research and teaching on the phenomenon of economic and business 'clusters'. Even in a global world particular localities appear to have distinctive advantages. This book brings together cutting edge work on the issue by leading international scholars.
Описание: Tourism has become one of the largest and fastest growing sectors in the world economy. Increasingly, research on tourism destinations has been at the centre of debates concerning destination competitiveness, governance, policies and destination management and marketing. This book investigates tourist destinations from two different perspectives. First, it approaches destinations using the concept of tourist clusters and investigates their role in competitiveness and firm performances. The second perspective studies the development of models of competitiveness and governance. It also develops an international benchmarking system of 15-EU countries, with an additional focus on Italy, UK and United States. The book will appeal to academics, scholars and practitioners in tourism studies, management, urban and regional studies and economic geography, etc.
Описание: An exploration of digital innovation. It presents: the results of an empirical analysis of the new phenomenon of virtual clusters (VCs), which highlight the
dynamics of these emerging innovation networks in the digital economy - and the challenges that this dynamics represents for the conventional theories, which are unable to define a
comprehensive framework that supports the development of these networks; an overview of the most significa
t theoretical approaches to innovation networks, and their rethinking in the digital economy scenario - following a neo-Schumpeterian approach, a particular focus is on the opportunity
to integrate the economic benefits coming from the geographical proximity, with the advantages related to the "organizational proximity" allowed by the ICT networks; the constituent
points of a strategy aimed at sustaining the developing processes of a VC in a drawback region, and a description of the e-Salento project, an application of this strategy to an Italian
drawback region, the Salento - some general implications of the project for theory and practice are also discussed; and the architecture and the master plan of two initiatives within the
e-Salento proje The perspective advanced in this work addresses issues concerned with VC growth and regions' economic development processes that are common to both the
regional studies and the innovation management literature; the text represents an important empirically grounded contribution to them. Furthermore, several scholars argue that new
development models are emerging for firms and regions.
There is a lack of published work that provides empirical grounding and/or analytical models of firms' and regions'
development processes in the Net Economy.
Описание: During the 1980s the Marshallian concept of industrial district (ID) became widely popular due to the resurgence of interest in the reasons that make the agglomeration of specialised industries a territorial phenomenon worth being analysed. The analysis of clusters and IDs has often been limited, considering only the local dimension of the created business networks. The external links of these systems have been systematically under-evaluated. This book offers a deep insight into the evolution of these systems and the internal-external mechanism of knowledge circulation and learning. This means that the access to external knowledge (information or R&D cooperative research) or to productive networks (global supply chains) is studied in order to describe how external knowledge is absorbed and how local clusters or districts become global systems. It provides a unified approach; showing that existing capabilities expand when locally embedded knowledge is combined with accessible external knowledge. In this view, external knowledge linkages reduce the danger of cognitive ‘lock-in’ and ‘over-embeddedness’, which may become important obstacles to local learning and innovation when technological trajectories and global economic conditions change. How to use Strategic Learning to rapidly respond to change and gain a sustainable advantage over your competitors
What's even harder than creating a breakthrough strategy? Making it stick. As companies are fighting to survive in a tough economy, this new book by Willie Pietersen demonstrates the power of the Strategic Learning process, a four-step dynamic cycle guaranteed to create and sustain winning performance. Adopted by a wide range of corporations and not-for-profit organizations, the Strategic Learning process builds on eight years of practicing, adapting and honing the original concepts Pietersen first introduced in "Reinventing Strategy "to explain how organizations can generate superior insights about their customers and competitors, craft a Winning Proposition, focus on a vital few key priorities, create buy-in throughout the organization and achieve success - again and again. Teaches organizations to make smarter decisions that help them win customers and earn superior profits Explains how to instill a culture of openness, learning, and courage that can face and respond to the constantly changing business environment Is a tool that can benefit leaders at all levels, in organizations both large and small, global and domestic, for-profit and not-for-profit Author Willie Pietersen, a former president of Tropicana and Seagram USA, is a professor of management at Columbia Business School, and the author of "Reinventing Strategy, "from Wiley
"Strategic Learning "shows you how your business or nonprofit organization can develop better, more effective strategies for long-term competitive advantage.
Описание: This book investigates the dynamics of the management of sustainability in networks and clusters – an area of increasing importance that is neglected by the many studies addressing sustainability at the single-enterprise level. The focus is in particular on projects involving groups of enterprises with a high level of productive interdependence and steady relations that allow sharing of resources and activities. The book is organized into two parts, the first of which discusses the value of the territory for firm competitiveness, examines the importance of social capital in creating sustainable business behaviors and “unique” networks, and describes principles and tools for the implementation and management of sustainability strategies in networks or clusters. The second part then presents the methodology and outcomes of empirical research conducted on industrial districts and productive centres in Campania, southern Italy, which are representative of Italian productive chains. The book will be of value to all management scholars with an interest in this field, as well as to readers wishing to learn more of the role of local institutions.

Описание: Presents 17 conceptual and empirical studies that contribute to the theory and practice of technological entrepreneurship. This book provides cross-disciplinary and multi-national perspectives on Schumpterian ideas. It takes a knowledge-centric approach to exploring issues in private and public partnership.
Описание: The topic of clustering is a central one in contemporary debates on the relationship between the global and the local. This book addresses both conceptual and empirical issues on clustering, learning and regional development. It represents the current state of affairs in this body of literature in a critical way and gives a unique overview of the latest developments. The book reflects a kind of uneasiness scholars have with the general model of clusters that has been so dominant in the field of regional economics and economic geography in the past twenty years. All chapters in this book contribute to the debate, either at the conceptual level, the empirical level or both. At the conceptual level, the cluster model has been criticized because it has been represented as a model that has been idealized too much. Moreover, it has been developed mainly as a theoretical model, without having been accompanied by a great deal of empirical testing of its main propositions.
Описание: The phenomenon of non-random spatial concentrations of firms in one or few related sectors (clusters) is intensively debated in economic theory and policy. The euphoria about successful clusters however neglects that historically, many thriving clusters did deteriorate into old industrial areas. This book studies the determinants of cluster survival by analyzing their adaptability to change in the economic environment. Linking theoretic knowledge with empirical observations, a simulation model (based in the N/K method) is developed, which explains when and why the cluster's architecture assists or hampers adaptability. It is found that architectures with intermediate degrees of division of labour and more collective governance forms foster adaptability. Cluster development is thus path dependent as architectures having evolved over time impact on the likelihood of future survival.
