Описание: This second edition of a widely used text offers an integrated and completely up-to-date coverage of composite materials. Focusing on the relationship between structure and properties, it provides a well-balanced treatment of the mechanics and the materials science of composites, while not neglecting the importance of processing. The book has been revised and updated throughout, with new chapters on fatigue and creep of composites. The text presents a detailed description of how the various reinforcements (such as, glass, polyethylene, aramid, carbon), the materials in which they are embedded (ceramics, metals, polymers), and of the interfaces between them, control the properties of the composite materials at both the micro- and macro-levels. Extensive use is made of micrographs and line drawings to emphasize the importance of of processing, microstructure, and properties in composite materials. Examples of practical applications in various fields are given throughout the book, and extensive references to the literature are provided. The book is intended for use in graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses, but practicing engineers and researchers in industry and academe will also find it a useful reference. About the author: K.K. Chawla has taught and done research at institutions in Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, and the US and has served as a consultant to industry, national laboratories, and government agencies. He is currently at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His books, used as texts throughout the world, include Ceramic Matrix Composites (1993), Fibrous Materials (1998), Mechanical Metallurgy (1984), and Mechanical Behavior of Materials (1998) (the last two as a co-author). From reviews of the first edition "By employing an economic writing style and carefully selected references, figures, and suggested readings, Chawla] has successfully produced a relatively short but thorough book.... Clear, concise, and complete, it] is an excellent up-to-date introduction to fiber composite materials.... I would recommend it." -- MRS Bulletin "covers polymer, metal, and ceramic matrix composites in a well-organized, up-to-date manner. Описание: The 2005 joint Cryogenic Engineering Conference and International Cryogenic Materials Conference (CEC-ICMC) was held at the Keystone Resort and Conference Center in Keystone, Colorado, from August 29th to September 2nd, 2005. We celebrated the 50th anniversary for the CEC and the 30th anniversary for the ICMC. To mark these milestones, CEC-ICMC returned to Colorado, the site of the first joint meeting. Over 700 attendees from 24 countries enjoyed the technical program, industrial exhibit, and special events. There were over 450 papers presented in plenary, oral, and poster sessions. All papers were peer-reviewed. Papers in the ICMC part of the conference present the latest information on materials and their properties used in cryogenic temperatures. Topics include the physical and mechanical properties of metals and alloys at cryogenic temperatures, insulation materials used in magnets for large-scale applications, recent developments in the conventional low-temperature superconductors, YBCO coated conductors, Bi-based superconductors, and MgB2 conductors. Conductor stability and AC losses as well as superconductor applications were also covered at this conference.

Описание: This student-friendly text illustrates how to balance design, materials, process selection, and economic and environmental analysis to optimize manufacturing
processes for a given component. Following an overview of product design and development, the three-part book first discusses types of failure and ways to minimize it. Then it
examines how material selection and manufacturing processes influence engineering design.
The third part integrates technical and economic aspects of material selection.
New and revised topics in this edition include new design considerations, environmental impact assessments, life cycle and recycling economics, and materials substitution.
Описание: Now in its fifth edition, Hydraulics in Civil and Environmental Engineering combines thorough coverage of the basic principles of civil engineering hydraulics with wide-ranging treatment of practical, real-world applications. This classic text is carefully structured into two parts to address principles before moving on to more advanced topics. The first part focuses on fundamentals, including hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, pipe and open channel flow, wave theory, physical modeling, hydrology, and sediment transport. The second part illustrates the engineering applications of these fundamental principles to pipeline system design; hydraulic structures; and river, canal, and coastal engineering—including up-to-date environmental implications. A chapter on computational hydraulics demonstrates the application of computational simulation techniques to modern design in a variety of contexts. What’s New in This Edition Substantive revisions of the chapters on hydraulic machines, flood hydrology, and computational modeling New material added to the chapters on hydrostatics, principles of fluid flow, behavior of real fluids, open channel flow, pressure surge in pipelines, wave theory, sediment transport, river engineering, and coastal engineering The latest recommendations on climate change predictions, impacts, and adaptation measures Updated references Hydraulics in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Fifth Edition is an essential resource for students and practitioners of civil, environmental, and public health engineering and associated disciplines. It is comprehensive, fully illustrated, and contains many worked examples. Spreadsheets and useful links to other web pages are available on an accompanying website, and a solutions manual is available to lecturers.
Описание: How do engineering materials deform when bearing mechanical loads? To answer this crucial question, the book bridges the gap between continuum mechanics and materials science. The different kinds of material deformation (elasticity, plasticity, fracture, creep, fatigue) are explained in detail. The book also discusses the physical processes occurring during the deformation of all classes of engineering materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites) and shows how these materials can be strengthened to meet the design requirements. It provides the knowledge needed in selecting the appropriate engineering material for a certain design problem. The reader will thus learn how to critically employ design rules and thus to avoid failure of mechanical components.

Описание: Materials Science for Engineering Students offers students of introductory materials science and engineering, and their instructors, a fresh perspective on the rapidly evolving world of advanced engineering materials. This new, concise text takes a more contemporary approach to materials science than the more traditional books in this subject, with a special emphasis on using an inductive method to first introduce materials and their particular properties and then to explain the underlying physical and chemical phenomena responsible for those properties. The text pays particular attention to the newer classes of materials, such as ceramics, polymers and composites, and treats them as part of two essential classes – structural materials and functional materials – rather than the traditional method of emphasizing structural materials alone. This book is recommended for second and third year engineering students taking a required one- or two-semester sequence in introductory materials science and engineering as well as graduate-level students in materials, electrical, chemical and manufacturing engineering who need to take this as a core prerequisite.

Описание: Computational Materials Engineering is an advanced introduction to the computer-aided modeling of essential material properties and behavior, including the physical, thermal and chemical parameters, as well as the mathematical tools used to perform simulations. Its emphasis will be on crystalline materials, which includes all metals. The basis of Computational Materials Engineering allows scientists and engineers to create virtual simulations of material behavior and properties, to better understand how a particular material works and performs and then use that knowledge to design improvements for particular material applications. The text displays knowledge of software designers, materials scientists and engineers, and those involved in materials applications like mechanical engineers, civil engineers, electrical engineers, and chemical engineers. Readers from students to practicing engineers to materials research scientists will find in this book a single source of the major elements that make up contemporary computer modeling of materials characteristics and behavior. The reader will gain an understanding of the underlying statistical and analytical tools that are the basis for modeling complex material interactions, including an understanding of computational thermodynamics and molecular kinetics; as well as various modeling systems. Finally, the book will offer the reader a variety of algorithms to use in solving typical modeling problems so that the theory presented herein can be put to real-world use.
