Описание: More than most artists, Henri Matisse conducted an ongoing dialogue with his earlier works, continually questioning himself and his methods in order to, as he put it, "push further and deeper into true painting". In a fresh approach to this giant of 20th-century art, Matisse: In Search of True Painting examines sixty works and more than five decades in a series of concise chapters by prominent Matisse scholars from the United States and Europe, each focusing on a particular aspect of his artistic development.
From early pairs such as Young Sailor I and II (1906) and Le Luxe I and II (1907-8) through five Interiors at Nice (1917-21) to scenes from the studio in Vence (1946-48), the book shows Matisse responding to earlier styles and artists and developing his own, often radical, answers to such problems as how to portray light, handle paint, select colours, and manipulate perspective. The volume also discusses findings from new technical studies carried out on the early paired works that shed more light on Matisse's complex and deeply-felt evolution. Both an intimate glimpse into the artistic process and a significant addition to literature on modern art, "Matisse: In Search of True Painting" traces the path by which Matisse becomes himself.
Описание: The Impressionists were among the first to portray gardens directly from life, focusing on their colour and form rather than using them as a background for historical, religious and literary themes. This book explores the symbiotic relationship that developed during the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth between artists and gardens, focusing on Monet and the creation of his garden at Giverny. Beautifully illustrated with masterpieces by Monet, his fellow Impressionists and such painters as Bonnard, Sargent, Klee, Kandinsky, Klimt, Matisse and Nolde, Painting the Modern Garden traces the effects of artistic movements and social and political influences on the garden in modern art.

Leading botanical painter, Simon Williams, specializes in painting in gouache and this is his first book. Botanical Painting in Gouache is full of practical advice on all aspects of using the exciting medium of gouache and contains many step-by-step demonstration paintings. In addition to the sumptuous flower paintings there are also sections on painting, butterflies, birds and exotic and unusual plants from the rainforest.
Описание: Even though France is the birthplace of Impressionism, German artists also played a crucial role in shaping this style of painting. This book examines the work of the three great German painters of the late 19th and early 20th century: Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth and Max Slevogt.
Inspired by French artists such as Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir and Cezanne as well as Van Gogh, Liebermann, Corinth and Slevogt, these German artists produced paintings that bore their own distinctive signatures, at once sensitive and forcefully expressive: Liebermann's paintings of his garden on Wannsee, Corinth's landscapes depicting the foothills of the Alps and the shores of Walchensee and the Neukastel county seat where Slevogt lived in the Rhenish Palatinate are world-famous. However, unfamiliar, even exotic and hitherto little known paintings as well as works by German contemporaries of the three painters are presented to provide interesting material for comparison and an intriguing new look at German Impressionist landscape painting.

The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue explore the abiding themes of still life across the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the fruit piece, the game piece, kitchen and banquet still lifes, the flower painting, musical instruments, the cabinet of curiosities, and the trompe-l'oeil. The diversity of artistic treatment of these themes in different countries will be shown through related works, such as the fruit still lifes of the female artists Louise Moillon and Fede Galizia or the kitchen scenes by Jean-Simeon Chardin and Luis Melendez. Other artists who cultivated this genre and who are also represented in the exhibition and in the catalogue include Juan Sanchez Cotan, Juan van der Hamen, Pieter Claesz, Juan Zurbaran, Rembrandt van Rijn, Antonio de Pereda, Nicolas Largillierre, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Luis de Melendez and Francisco de Goya. The exhibition has been made possible due to the commitment of the many lending institutions, private collectors and museums, such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, The Metropolitam Museum in New York, The Louvre Museum, The Prado Museum, The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Mauritshuis in The Hague, The National Gallery in London and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, among so many others. This volume allows an insight into the theme, through the essays and the individual studies of all paintings, written by such scholars as Peter Cherry, John Loughman and Lesley Stevenson. Volume II, devoted to still-life painting in the 19th and 20th centuries, is due for publication in October 2011.
Описание: Throughout his long working life, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) produced large-format portraits and subject pictures. From the mid-1870s to the mid-1880s-the decade of Impressionism-his vertical, grand-scale canvases were among the artist's most daring and ambitious presentations of contemporary life and fashion. Today they rank among the masterpieces of Impressionism. This stunning book offers fresh insights into Renoir's complex ambitions as a young artist, when he submitted works to both the avant-garde impressionist exhibitions and the official Salon. While painting in the new impressionist style, Renoir remained committed to the full-length format, which was eschewed by most of his fellow impressionists as too traditional. This format afforded Renoir the opportunity to devote himself to the heroic painting of everyday life, and also to linger on the finest details of his figures' fashionable costumes and accessories. Ten iconic canvases display the rich variety of this artist's painterly technique. They reveal the sheer virtuosity of his brushwork in creating silk, lace, mink, and taffeta for shimmering ball gowns, sumptuous furs, chic Parisian day dresses, and glamorous theatrical costumes. These paintings capture the faces and fashions of Renoir's Paris. Extensively illustrated, the book draws upon contemporary criticism, literature, and archival documents to explore the motivation behind Renoir's full-length figure paintings, and technical studies of the canvases shed new light on the artist's working methods.

Описание: A landmark volume that tells the story of the archetypal Renaissance city anew, through its art.
Located at the heart of the Italian peninsula, Florence was already a center of commerce and fine craftsmanship by 1252, when it began to mint its own currency, the gold florin, the “dollar of the Middle Ages.” The great wealth amassed by the Medici, the Strozzi, the Pitti, and other merchant and banking families was in some part responsible for the flowering of the arts, literature, philosophy, and science in the period that followed, a phenomenon that even then was recognized as, and called, a renaissance. The legacy of this great epoch, both tangible and spiritual, ensured that Florence would remain a beacon of culture through its succeeding centuries of ducal rule, eventually becoming an essential stop on the Grand Tour and a font of inspiration for figures like Stendhal and Ruskin.
And Florence was all along a city of painters, whose works not only record and interpret its history—its sights; the likenesses of its leaders and luminaries; its battles, civic myths, and patron saints—but are also an integral part of that history themselves. In this magnificent volume are assembled a wide variety of artworks, both familiar and rarely seen, that, interwoven with an authoritative text, chronicle the changing fortunes of Florence—from the age of Cimabue and Giotto, through the High Renaissance of Leonardo and Michelangelo, to the Mannerism of Vasari and Bronzino, and even to the era of modern travelers like Sargent and Degas.
The History of Florence in Painting is a feast for the eyes and the intellect, and a worthy companion to the previous volumes in this series, which present the histories of Venice, Paris, and Rome in painting.
Описание: Following independence in 1947, Indias artists faced a particular challenge: how to express the new nations distinctive character while entering a global discourse focused on modernisms universal premises of experimentation and shared human values. In the absence of a dominant aesthetic, painters could turn where they wished and blend as they liked from Abstract Expressionism to Tantric spiritualism; from Rajasthani painting to changes in Indias complex politics, religions, castes and daily life. This richly illustrated, in-depth study, published to accompany the exhibition organized by the Peabody Essex Museum in the USA, surveys the three generations of artists responsible for these critical shifts in the development of Indias modernist art. It shows how their achievements and the countrys unprecedented boom ushered Indias modern and contemporary art into a new era of globalism, a soaring international market, and an explosion in the media and technologies of art.
