Описание: Stubborn Poetries is a study of poets whose work, because of its difficulty, apparent obduracy, or simple resistance to conventional explication, remains more-or-less firmly outside the canon.

The focus of the essays in Stubborn Poetries by Peter Quartermain is on nonmainstream poets--often unknown, unstudied, and neglected writers whose work bucks preconceived notions of what constitutes the avant-garde. “Canonical Strategies and the Question of Authority: T.S. Eliot and William Carlos Williams” opens the collection and sounds a central theme: Quartermain argues that Williams, especially in his early work, sought noncanonical status, in contrast to Eliot, who rapidly identified his work with a literary and critical establishment. As is well known, Eliot attracted early critical and academic attention; Williams did not. Williams’s insistence that the personal and individual constituted his sole authority is echoed again and again in the work of the writers examined in the subsequent essays.

In considering the question “What makes the poems the way they are?” most of the essays offer close readings (etymological, social, linguistic, and even political) of linguistically innovative twentieth-century poets. Linguistic innovation, as Marjorie Perloff and many other critics have shown, shows no reverence for national boundaries; two of the poets discussed are British (Basil Bunting and Richard Caddel) and two Canadian (Robin Blaser and Steve McCaffery). The last four essays in the book consider more general topics: the shape and nature of the book, the nature of poetic fact, the performance of the poem (is it possible to read a poem aloud well?), and--closing the book--an excursus (via the Greek myth of Io and the typography of Geofroy Tory) on the alphabet.
Описание: Mapping the Landscape, Remapping the Text: Spanish Poetry from Antonio Machado's Campos de Castilla to the First Avant-Garde (1909-1925) explores the mapping of identity and memory in Antonio Machado's (1875-1939) Campos de Castilla (1912, 1917) before studying its disruption by the avant-garde movements Ultraismo (1918-1925) and Creacionismo (1910s-1930s). Machado's attribution of identity to the landscape was remapped by the first avant-garde in order to circumvent the placement of identity in textual landscapes that are coded as national or regional, transform the conception of subjectivity and identity through a reconstruction of poetic form, and reposition Spain at the center of the European avant-garde. Renee M. Silverman focuses on the way in which these mappings and remappings affect perspective and perception. As Silverman argues, both Ultraismo and Creacionismo employ spatio-temporal simultaneity and the multiperspectivism of abstract visual art idioms such as Cubism to break the bond between people and place that is characteristic of Campos de Castilla. Yet, as Silverman emphasizes, there are some important differences between Ultraismo and Creacionismo, particularly in Gerardo Diego's (1896-1987) idiosyncratic brand. This book--the first in English to center on Ultraismo and Creacionismo--contrasts the way in which Ultraismo's leader, Guillermo de Torre (1900-1971), displaces the subject from the terrain of memory, freeing it to cross borders, with how Diego re-roots identity in the textual landscape so as to restore a sense of collectivity to vanguard poetry.
Gerald Janecek describes the experiments in visual, literature conducted from 1900 to 1930, the heyday of the Russian Avant Garde. Focusing on an aspect of Russian literary history that has previously been almost ignored, he shows how Russian writers of this period tried unusual methods to make their texts visually interesting or expressive. The book includes 183 illustrations, most from rare publications and many reproduced for the first time. The author discusses such figures as the Symbolist Andrey Bely, the Futurists Aleksey Kruchonykh, Vasili Kamensky, and Vladimir Mayakovsky, and the post-Futurist Ilya Zdanevich, and their use of devices ranging from unorthodox layouts and florid typography to roughly done lithographed or handmade books.

Описание: The Seasons and the Gardener was first published in 1940 as one in a series of Cambridge children’s books related to the natural world. H. E. Bates provides a beautifully written account of the British garden in its interaction with the seasons. This is combined with a large number of illustrations by the renowned naturalistic artist C. F. Tunnicliffe. In exploring the various aspects of gardening the book manages to retain a broadly educational approach, whilst conveying this information in a highly readable, personal style. This is a delightful document of its time, which explores the idea of the garden as a place of refuge in an increasingly mechanical world.
