Описание: The Souls of Black Folk is W.E.B. Du Bois most famous work. While the work is often viewed as a classic in African American literature and the history of the African American experience, the sociological significance of the work has been understated. In his initial discussions with the books original publisher, Du Bois desired to prepare a volume that would showcase his ongoing sociological work on the Negro problems. While many editions of Du Bois classic text have appeared, no edition has focused primarily on the eight previously published essays in their original form and chronological order. This fact alone makes The Sociological Souls of Black Folk unique. An introductory essay by the volumes editor, Robert Wortham, highlights the sociological significance of the original essays by addressing such themes as the concept of the self, the social construction of the African American experience, and racial inequality. Eight additional essays originally published between 1897 and 1900 are added by the editor in a second section. These additional sociological essays focus on African American entrepreneurship, crime, race relations, liberal arts education, the Black Churchs function within the African American community, and the quality of African American life in the Southern Black Belt. The essays included in The Sociological Souls of Black Folk provide the reader with an opportunity to gain a greater appreciation for Du Bois early sociological work and recognize that Du Bois was indeed one of the pioneering figures in the development of sociology in the United States.

Описание: A Guide for Sustaining Conversations on Racism, Identity, and our Mutual Humanity is a hands-on guide for teachers, students, and agency professionals seeking to respond skillfully and sensitively to the often daunting challenges of classrooms, as students demand both answers and accountability concerning issues of race, power, privilege, and oppression and the emotional responses they provoke. The guide includes suggestions to implement before entering the classroom, so that the necessary personal, community, and institutional infrastructure can support authentic, sustainable conversations. It discusses how educators can respond appropriately in the classroom to the hot-button issues of the day. There are also lessons for critical pedagogy and management that help educators reimagine classrooms and learn to create mutually supportive learning environments.Written by four experienced anti-racist educators and practitioners, the book takes a direct, compassionate approach designed to diminish dogma and fear. By examining how socially different people respond to the same difficult questions, A Guide for Sustaining Conversations on Racism, Identity, and our Mutual Humanity creates a rich set of options for readers to use in their own classrooms, agencies, and field placements.

Описание: "as visually arresting as it is informative."--The Boston Globe

"Du Bois's bold colors and geometric shapes were decades ahead of modernist graphic design in America."--Fast Company's Co.Design

The first complete publication of W.E.B. Du Bois's colorful charts, graphs, and maps presented at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Famed sociologist, writer, and black rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois exhibited a series of groundbreaking data visualizations at the 1900 Paris Exposition, offering a view into the lives of black Americans. His prophetic infographics convey a literal and figurative representation of what he famously referred to as "the color line," collected here in full color for the first time.

A landmark collection for social and graphic design history. Beautiful in design and powerful in content, these data portraits make visible a wide spectrum of black experience. From advances in education to the lingering effects of slavery, their insights and innovations remain informative and provocative to today's contemporary audience. Far ahead of their time, they also shaped, as Maria Popova wrote, how "Du Bois himself thought about sociology, informing the ideas with which he set the world ablaze three years later in The Souls of Black Folk."

An essential companion to W.E.B. Du Bois's The Souls of Black Folk.

Includes contributions from Aldon Morris, Silas Munro, and Mabel O. Wilson.
